Madeline | 293 comments Well, this semester is kicking my butt lol so my progress is not what I dreamed, but I'm still enjoying it. The sonnets were beautiful and melancholy. I'm not usually a poetry reader but I understand why hers are so loved.

El Rory wrote: "El: What was The Golem like? "

Rory, The Golem was just so-so. I wanted to like it a lot more, but wound up giving it only 3 stars. Maybe it was my mood while reading it, but I actually had a hard time keeping up with the story. I don't like to blame the author for that when I know it was probably my own fault, but it definitely led to some disappointment.

El: I looked up what GOLEM meant & www.visuwords.com said "(Jewish folklore) an artificially created human being that is given life by supernatural means" - was this sort of like a Frankenstein tale?

Goodreads claims it is the "most famous supernatural novel in modern European literature" but I had never heard of it. I'm intrigued....

Louise | 49 comments I've completed the 50 point task - Read 2 books by an author who writes under two different names.
I listened to the audio book of Murder in Mesopotamia by Agatha Christie and read Absent in the Spring which was written under the name Mary Westmacott. I found both quite slow to get into, but after that, they were strangly addictive...

I now have 370 points.

Allison Finished 10.5 - The Life and Many Deaths of Harry Houdini. This was an okay book. I enjoyed the parts actually about Houdini, but the author threw in so much other stuff, that did relate in a vague sense, but the book would have been much easier and more entertaining without it. I was also slightly annoyed because I found a few huge historical inaccuracies.

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 1489 comments Bonnie's Task: Read a book outside your normal genre.
I DO NOT like to read horror books, I won't go to horror movies, so I've been putting off this task. But since I decided to do it, I figured I'd go to the king of horror for my choice, and borrowed a Stephen King book from my daughter. I will never think the same of a cell phone again - smoke signals anyone?

25.5 Cell by Stephen King completed 4.26.09

Rory M. I'm lagging behind in my reading...my husband & I found out this week we are expecting our first child...I've been reading all the baby brochures, magazines and books my doctor gave me instead. I'll have to figure out a way to fit in some baby books for the summer challenge!

Seems like you could switch some things around (depending on your reading list) and add at least one of these to "read outside of your normal genre!" Congratulations! (and don't worry--all those people who say you will never read again are not entirely correct. LOL)

Kristen Harvey Congrats Rory!

Just finished Adverbs A Novel by Daniel Handler who wrote the Lemony Snicket books. I read the first in that series a few days ago. So there goes the 50 point task. This book was... interesting. Not always in a good way. It was a book about love and often I got confused on who was who and if they were actually introduced earlier and if anything in this book really happened to the characters. It was just strange and interesting all wrapped into one. His children's books make a lot more sense.. that's for sure..

Will post my full list in a second here.

I really enjoyed that whole trilogy. Libba Bray writes as if she did research before writing about the little things in a woman's life back then and I appreciate that.

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments First, congratulations Rory!

As for the challenge, I finished Come Closer by Sara Gran for Bonnie's Task 25.5 (horror). It was an extremely fast read and I give it a solid 3 stars. I made sure to read it during the day because I'm a wuss, but I think I could've read this at night with no problem.

Jessica | 18 comments I finished The Innocent Assassins by Loren Eiseley for the 15.2 poetry task for a total of 100 points.

This is an elegant and haunting collection of poems by an archeologist and paleontologist. The book had been on my shelf for years - it took the Spring Challenge to get me to read it.

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments Cait, I thought the same thing about Come Closer when I read it, too. "I'll be fine, it wasn't that scary". It got a hell of a lot scarier when I started hearing "tapping" on my wall late at night. I was terrified.

P.S. The "tapping" ended up being my heater. Sigh, the joys of having an overactive imagination.

Jessica (sureshot26) | 94 comments Congrats Rory - best wishes for a wonderful little sprout! In his/her honor, I'll be tackling two books from your shelves to complete 25.3 in the next couple of weeks.

I'm also adding 50 points to my total with the midway task - I finished this one with Donald Westlake's Somebody Owes Me Money and a book he wrote as Richard Stark, The Man With the Getaway Face. Westlake died a few months ago, but he left a substantial body of work that'll keep me entertained for quite a while.

Current Total: 280

Like Jessica, I think I did not set a high enough goal. I'm pleased to have already exceeded mine, as Jessica surely will hers. But a reward? Anyone thinking of their own reward? I had not thought of one before, but having made a substantial order at Better World Books this week, I'm thinking that will have to be it.
