I really enjoyed The Geography of Bliss: One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World.

Nicole | 155 comments Sara, I'm with you on audio. I have one I'm actually reading, one in my car, and one at work for when I'm doing mindless stuff. I've rearranged my list several times to work in audio.

I just finished A Great and Terrible Beauty to go along with Breaking Dawn for 25.8.

I hadn't picked up a YA book prior to the Twilight series, but I enjoyed both and will probably check out a few more.

Cynthia, I finally got around to changing my profile to "Nicole NC", sorry it took so long, but hope it helps.

Total points: 290

Angela | 1934 comments I am going to post this again because it may have gotten lost in all the posts:

Can I use Diana in Search of Herself: Portrait of a Troubled Princess by Sally Bedell Smith for Jon's task?

I have 20 books left and I SHOULD be able to finish.

message 4954: by Maliades (new)

Maliades I just finished The Houdini Girl by Martyn Bedford for task # 10.5. My new total is 195.

So today I finished all 3 of the books I've been reading this week (I am not a monogamous reader). Now I get to start on new ones. Hopefully get the 50-pointer task done. That would be nice!

SusannaW (susannauk) | 51 comments Hi

It's 2.30 am here in the UK, and I'm hooked watching the 60's film 'Farenheit 451' - about book burning (Truffaut, after Ray Bradbury's book).

There's a long list here of books referenced in the film..thought it might be of use to some of us...

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 1489 comments Two more challenges done and finished my 10-pointers:

10.9 TNBBC Top Books: The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne completed 4.24.09
Got a lot more out of reading this now than I did as a senior in high school. This time I read 10-15 pp. at a time and let that seep in for a day or two before picking it up again.

25.3 Angela's Task: two books from Sandy's shelves Thanks Sandy!
The Rescue by Nicholas Sparks completed 4.21.09
AND Once a Princess by Johanna Lindsey completed 4.24.09

35 points added to previous 475 points = total of 510 points as of 4.24.09

Yes it fits the task.

message 4958: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 954 comments I completed 15-point task number 5. I read The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman (112 pages) which won the Newbury in 1987, the year I was born.

This brings me to 320 points!

Sorcery and Cecelia or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot Being the Correspondence of Two Young Ladies of Quality Regarding Various Magical Scandals in London and the Country - one of my favourites, it's lots of fun :)

I just finished reading The Princess Bride for task 5.8. It was only ever laugh-out-loud funny a couple of times, but the whole way through it was amusing, and I had a continual smile on my face!
I have 18 books to read to finish the challenge...I thought I'd get more reading done in the past two weeks (uni holidays) but alas, it didn't happen...

Allison There is no way that I will get even close to finishing this challenge. I'm in a literature class and a philosophy class this semester, and although I've tried to work in as many of those books into the challenge as I could, the school reading did have to come first. I'm hoping that I'll have more time for the summer challenge.
But for me, most of the fun was making my list, and adding multiple books to my tbr pile from reading about what others have read.

Lol, my challenge reading comes first, then my school reading. -sheepish look- That's pretty sad, but my classes consist of copying down powerpoint, so no worries.

I wish my classes consisted of that. My literature class requires an analysis of every book, so you pretty much have to read those. And my philosophy class is another story. I don't even understand what is going on, and I keep up with the reading- I couldn't imagine not reading any of it...

50 Points
1. Sandy's Task: Blaze A Novel AND Salem's Lot

I just finished Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment by James Patterson for the sci-fi novel task. I thought it was a real fun YA novel. Sure, it wasn't ground-breaking or terribly deep or even thought-provoking, but it was a fun, cute, and an incredibly fast-read. So, basically a typical Patterson just geared towards teens. Although, I do think adults would get into it as well.

Anyway, that now makes my total 190.

Thank you, you are the best!

message 4973: by Liz M (last edited Apr 25, 2009 04:28AM) (new)

Liz M Nothing like finishing a 50 point task to plump up your score! I caved and decided to read a couple of mysteries, rather than wait for more obscure/"literary" books to come from inter-library loan. I read A Portion for Foxes by Kay Mitchell who wrote File Under: Deceased under the name Sarah Lacey.

Both were quick, engrossing reads. It was fun to read them back-to-back and pick up little things like both books mentioning the same fictitious restaurant.

Elizabeth (NC) | 209 comments I finished The Reading Group by Elizabeth Noble and The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman for the G and R 25 points.

I enjoyed The Reading Group (reminded me a lot of Five Fortunes by Beth Gutcheon--sp?). I did not like The Graveyard Book as much as I thought I would. It won the Newbery Award and usually I devour those books, but this one did not seem to have the same level of depth as many do. It also seemed more disturbing than several Newberys and I don't think I would recommend it to my students (5th graders).

Rory M. COMPLETED 10 POINTS TASK
#7 Mother’s Day: Tex by S.E. Hinton was a gift from mom for my classroom library; she heard how much my students loved The Outsiders so she bought some other SE Hinton books for us (4/16/09 – 4/25/09)

I enjoyed this book. I think it was much better than Rumble Fish.

COMPLETED 15 POINT TASK
#6 Translated Book: The Shadow of the Wind Bestseller's Choice Audio by Carlos Ruiz Zafon (4/4/09 – 4/25/09)

What a magical book! I loved this story. Now I want to go to Barcelona - which I missed when I backpacked through Europe 15 years ago. I'm adding that city to my TV (to visit) list. I listened to it on audio & thought the narration was A+.

COMPLETED 15 POINT TASK
#9 Color in Title / Eat Food: Blue Eyes, Black Hair by Marguerite Duras; I ate two chocolate (black) cupcakes each covered with a huge blue flower - delicious! (4/20/09 - 4/25/09)

This is my second time reading this experimental novel by Duras. It's not one of my favotie but I enjoy trying to find...what I believe...are slivers of her real life shining though the fiction. She's been one of my favorite authors since my early 20s at which time I devoured her novels - now that I'm in my late 30's I thought it would be interesting to reread them. If you haven't read The Lover I recommned it as well as the film.

I had seen both the original Russian movie along with the American remake and the book is much better than the American version, but holds up to the original Russian. A nice mix of mytery, sci-fi, romance and drama. With a man sent to a space station who is haunted by his dead wife.

This brings my total to 245.

Yep, no way will I try to compete with 2400+. I thought I was bad with 54 on my To Read list and another 78 on my Wish List. I know that Wish List will expand, but I hope not past a couple of hundred at most.

Avory Faucette (avoryfaucette) Ha, it's only because I have an obsessive habit of writing things down and a fear of forgetting. My TBR list always makes me sad because I statistically can't read that many books in a lifetime - but then some of them are just books I pulled out of bibliographies of other books I read and I won't be crushed if I don't get to them.

Jessica (sureshot26) | 94 comments If any Virgos are still looking for a book to finish 15.1, I can recommend Rochelle Krich's "Now You See Me..." - it's a mystery where a young Orthodox Jewish girl disappears, and her innocence/virginity is a crucial part of the plot.

Current Total: 230
Goal: 300

9. Read a book with a color in the title AND eat a meal that includes at least 2 foods that are that color (you don’t have to cook it yourself).
