Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I wonder if 'first in the series set in ...sounds more positive than 'look out for more....' or it that just me?

message 652: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Barrett | 1537 comments I agree with Kath, Tim.

But the back cover is simply awesome! Looks really classy, and the little crown sets it off a treat. Well done.

I began Wanted last night.

message 653: by Kath (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I always prefer a positive promotion. Don't you hate it when someone says, 'Why not try my book, XXX?' If the only reason I have is that I can't think of a reason why not, the author will wait forever!

message 654: by Tim (last edited Jun 19, 2013 01:03AM) (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments Not sure about that. "Look out for..." is active, encouraging people to do stuff, go out and find the next book, whereas "The first in..." is quite passive, and anyway it says "Book 1" on the front cover.

I'm thinking it needs something there along the lines of, (view spoiler) (but that too closely matches the headings).

message 655: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Barrett | 1537 comments Now that's a ruddy spoiler!

I haven't got to that bit yet!

message 656: by Kath (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments See you've got to be careful!
Look out always sounds like a warning - like 'Duck!'
However, I'm convinced enough to be waiting for Book 2 however you word it.

Tim | 8539 comments Andrew wrote: "Now that's a ruddy spoiler!

I plead "unreliable narrator"!

message 658: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments But it's hard to write a blurb without spoiling *something* - even the title, "Wanted", is a spoiler in that respect, and the top of the blurb has already said Wanted for murder. However there's no who or how or why.

Maybe "Framed" is a word too far, but I don't wand to simply say wanted cos then I really am just repeating the headings in the text.

message 659: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Barrett | 1537 comments I know what you mean. But (aside from the fact I've seen this book grow from a distance) you'd already hooked me with the enticing blurb.

Perhaps you could make more of an inference that she is wanted for murder in the line 'Sixteen year old Flick Carter has saved the life of an injured Scav', some connection rather than say it blatantly perhaps?

message 660: by Kath (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments It's a poser alright.

message 661: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments How about something like

With no one left she can trust, in the small Oxfordshire town of Faringdon, nowhere is safe. Flick must go on the run, or she will die.

message 662: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments Or swap it round a bit:

In the small Oxfordshire town of Faringdon, nowhere is safe. With no one left she can trust, Flick must go on the run, or she will die.

message 663: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Barrett | 1537 comments :)

message 664: by Kath (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Yep. The last.

message 665: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments Something like this...

The barcode goes at the bottom right, so anything at the bottom of the page has to go on the left.

message 666: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Barrett | 1537 comments Love it.

I wondered if the very last line should be more concise: '...Flick must run or die'.

And then I noticed the upper case header above it, ahaha.

message 667: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments Yeah, I don't really want to duplicate the header. I suppose I could say "Flick must run. Or die." making it 2 sentences, which could be punchier and isn't quite the heading.

message 668: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments I've put the 'Flick must run. Or die' version up on KUF...

message 669: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Barrett | 1537 comments Woo hoo :)

message 670: by Kath (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I think you're winning lad!

message 671: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments I found this brilliant font - Trajan Pro - which is what I used for the headings. Very elegant & refined, you almost expect to see it carved in marble. I've also used it on the new front cover, above the title (I think the old font was a bit thuggish!), which reminds me, there's a new update trickling through the system. It's already in the Amazon store for new purchases. It's not majorly different - some typos, a little rewording and a few small continuity glitches. But it should be available through Manage My Kindle when the minions at Amazon get around to it.

Tim | 8539 comments This is the whole cover: :)

Tim | 8539 comments In the latest revision I have a little note at the end of the book asking people if they'd mind leaving a review. Plus a signup link for my new notifications mailing list "Omnis Speculamur".

(Vos Omnis Speculamur - We Watch Everyone being the motto of the Kingsmen ;))

That revision only went live yesterday, and I don't think anyone's bought it yet...

message 686: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments Tonight I took the entire of book 2 -- or at least my outline for it -- to writers group and did a thorough debrief on it. All the plot points, high points, low points, disasters, ending, emotional arc for the main characters; what they want, what they need," A plot", "B plot", who is POV for each and why, how and where the plots intersect, discussed different options for the areas where I wasn't sure of the right direction, or how to get character A to location B and so on. What bits need work and what bits are reasonably sound.

All this was at a pretty high level, based on what was effectively a 2 page synopsis, "this happens, this happens, x does y because of z" and so on. Quite nerve wracking, because I didn't know if they were going to basically say "it's rubbish; it won't work because of this this and this, throw it away and start again." But they didn't. They did recommend some changes and suggested I do certain things differently, all of which I shall think about and incorporate.

Onwards and upwards, as they say.

Tim | 8539 comments Thanks David.

Meanwhile in other news... I cocked up the last update to iBooks. I have a tech login for another author, who doesn't have a Mac, so I can upload her epubs for her. So guess which account I uploaded my update to... Yup. Hers. So the book is temporarily unavailable on iTunes while that little mess gets sorted out.

And in other other news, the new revised paperback is finally ready at Feed A read. But I can't buy a any copies because their fricking EFT module craps out before asking for the card details.

Ho hum. It was bed time an hour and a half ago...

A good story. Well done for a first time writer. The characters are believable and interesting. The way they cope with life in a small town in post-apocalypse England is well thought out. I look forward to more books from this author.

:-D

maybe the NSA/FBI/CIA/MI5/MI6/SO12 etc should take a leaf!

(still taking cover)

Tim | 8539 comments Noticed that KDP has added in some new categories under scifi and fantasy, so I've re-categorised the book and changed its tags in the hope that it might gain some traction...

We shall see.

message 697: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments Yay! Paperback's out :D

Sometime in the next umpty-tump weeks it'll trickle through to Amazon etc. but until then, you can buy it direct from F-A-R: http://www.feedaread.com/books/WANTED...

It's got a gorgeous matte cover that has an almost sensuous velvety feel to it. Go into a bookshop and fondle a few books (the matte ones, not the glossy ones) and you'll see what I mean. :) I take no responsibility for you getting into trouble...

message 698: by Kath (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Tim, would you rather we waited to get it from Amazon, which might give you some sort of ranking boost?

message 699: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments That would be nice, but some people have said to me they want it as soon as they can get hold of it. And if you want to read it while it's still a pick of the month, Amazon might well not be quick enough. Well, they won't, in all honesty.

message 700: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments Only managed 500 words today :(, on account of being totes excite over the p/backs :)

Looks like I'll have to do another session after dinner (so much for the film I was going to watch!)
