James | 79 comments I was hoping you were going to be tipping us to a bevy of cheap copies again. I missed out the last time.

Mostly wanted to say that there are none and won't likely be any more ; but that may not be true ;; and I also don't wanna be responsible for the shelling out of large quantities of $$$$. {although this book is worth=it} Disclaimer Disclaimer Disclaimer

I can't say I know that site either. But at 67% below the typical bargain price it might be worth the risk. I do notice however (for good or ill) that all three copies of W&M posted there are from the same book seller in Washington DC.

So if I am correct about the price of Plus (both pb and hd) typically being around US$50+ ; then today is a good day if you are looking for affordable copies of Plus. Paperback only. For less than US$20 there are six listings at amazon and four listings at abebooks ::

I had the paperback of Plus in my saved for later bin, but you convinced me to pull the trigger. I also picked up both Dalkey Archive volumes of Miss MacIntosh, My Darling for $8 total.

Thanks for the link J. Someone might get a good buy there, but I don't think it'll be me. If someone on here does snag it, it would be nice to know that site is legit

Jason | 1 comments I picked up Plus for $8 with $4 shipping very recently but it was the Carroll & Graf paperback. Currently there is another one for about $8.50 on Amazon. The downside is that it's a reprint and looks a bit worse than the awesome original cover but a plus is the introduction.

Edit: no pun intended in that last sentence.

James | 79 comments $35 second edition Knopf hardcover on abebooks. Although I got as far as putting in my security code on my credit card, but I decided not to buy because I believe in the institution of marriage. Gain from my loss!

It's still there folks! Whadda steal!

[meanwhile, prices for Plus have returned to normal]

James | 79 comments I was hoping one of our fellow readers would jump in and snatch it. Instead, I just purchased the copy for 35. The temptation at that price point was too much for me to handle.

Well done! It may not be one of those $10 bargains we had a few months back ; but picking it up at new prices (not collectors' prices) is still amaze=balls!

[I was wrong about Plus -- abe has two copies @ US$20 each]

Jonathan (nathandjoe) | 51 comments Thanks - ordered one. When that arrives I will be able to do a "complete works of McElroy" photo and be one of the cool kids..

Am trying to decide between Hind, Lookout and Actress to read next...all three are calling me from my shelves

Since Hind's has no reviews, I'd advocate on its behalf. Nor does Actress have much representation (but Jeff Bursey has a review up). Lookout would have been his meisterstuck had he not written W&M, so there's that.

May do Hind, just as the cover is so great and it will be interesting to read "early" Joe

James | 79 comments Well, the copy for $35 turned out to be a glitch in the Abebooks system. The seller personally called me and said it had sold last year. Luckily, my local library has a copy, but eventually I want to get my mitts on one that I can love and cherish and call my very own.

message 375: by Post Ironic (last edited Apr 15, 2014 12:46PM) (new)

Post Ironic (theghostoflaszlojamf) I got lucky with finding this book in the leather edition of 99 for very cheap, but being totally honest, I would spend $100+ to get my hands on one of the limited print run in a second. It's worth it. And besides, if one is worried about the financial aspect of spending $100 + on a book, it is certainly going to be worth much more someday.

I recently found a first edition, in near mint of Angela Carter's Infernal Desire Machines of Dr Hoffmann, and spent, well, more than I should have. But things like first edition books and old vinyl records, super amazing to have.

So spend the money on an amazing copy of this epic book!

message 376: by Nathan "N.R.", James Mayn (new)

Nathan "N.R." Gaddis (nathannrgaddis) | 662 comments I'm not saying buy these ; they do seem too much $$$ for their condition -- US$60+shipping. (or, the sellers don't bother with informative condition=descriptions). BUT the thing is that their prices have fallen ~$15 recently. Keep you're eye on them.

message 377: by Brant (new)

Brant | 5 comments If anyone is still looking for copies, due to some amazing luck at used book stores recently, I now have two extra first edition hardback copies of W&M that I am willing to part with. One is in great shape; looks like it’s never been read and even has the dust jacket in a Brodart. There’s just some very slight wear on the bottom of the text block. The second is not quite as pristine of a copy: there’s some light foxing on the fore edge of the text block, and it looks like the free endpaper at some point had perhaps a personalized library plate that was subsequently removed. There’s still a dark spot on the page, but none of the glue is there (i.e., it isn’t sticky). The rest of the book is perfectly fine and looks unread (no markings, writing, highlighting, dog-ears, etc.). The dust jacket is in good shape, just some shelf wear. If someone in the group wants one, I’ll take $45 plus shipping for the first one or $30 plus shipping for the second one. Just send me a message if you’re interested, and I’m happy to work out whatever method of shipping you would like. I can send pictures or more info if you want it. Or, if you’re in the DC area, happy to hand it off personally at a mutually convenient location.

Would any be so benevolent as to help me in finding this book? I'm rather desperate. I have something of a fetish for encyclopedic post modern texts, and the elusiveness of this work is a source of unending pain. They recommend it to me because I like JR, because I like Omensetter's Luck, because I like Gravity's Raonbow, because I like Infinite Jest, and because I like Mulligan Stew; my longing to read this novel became so great I thought maybe the only means of attaining this novel would be self-erasure, and this is the nirvana I would be given. Please, help me

Jacob (jacobaugust) | 13 comments The cheapest copies are currently going for $84.44 on Amazon. If that's too much (it is for me--I had to talk myself into shelling out $60 for my copy), perhaps try the library?

Nathan "N.R." Gaddis (nathannrgaddis) | 662 comments Here's what I know ::

1) Not quite sure about that copy at openlibrary because W&M has still not been officially released as an ebook by anyone (I'm almost certain). But Dzanc book is working on releasing most of McElroy's books in an ebook format soon. We've been waiting for this awhile, but it should still be in the pipeline.

2) When Dzanc releases the ebook of W&M there is a small chance that they will also do a small print run.

3) If you have the financial resources and can find a copy in a condition adequate to your preferences, W&M is easily worth $100 ; especially if you've already run through or will run through those other American postmodern encyclopedic tomes. It's just about the best thing since the days of Proust/Joyce.

4) It's still expensive!!

5) The library copies available within 48 miles of Pacifica, CA :: https://www.worldcat.org/title/women-...

6) Meanwhile, had Joe not written W&M, Lookout Cartridge may have counted as his masterpiece. I doubt you'll go wrong with it ; DFW found here a small piece of IJ's ancestry. It's available cheap, at least in pb.

I thank you all for kindness, but I just found a copy for $50. I'm off to badger my parents who are still my benefactors to brings forth the money needed.

Also, Nathan, I saw you deleted the "up yours" comment I'd left on your review of JR; do you not recall a certain conversation between Bast and JR on a certain German composer? And I should mention as well; you're a pretty cool guy from what I gather

Sorry 'bout that! Lack of context. You did leave a Like, so I should have been more charitable. Please do come back and quote "Up yours" once more. [apologies -- I've got a troll=paranoia problem]

Thankfully, I was fully reimbursed all sums lost, but the few seconds one experiences when joy gives way to sorrow cannot be.

I'll not lose hope, though. I'll scour one used bookstore after another till I find on ignorant of what they're selling
