Trying to find a Copy?
My W&M is still en route, but a beautiful used library copy of The Tunnel came in. It was pretty big, so I thought it was W&M. I imagine W&M would be bigger. I flipped through The Tunnel, and it looks like a fascinating book, with some visual word play. Here's a funny page:
That's hot. I like how it's jizzing an "I". I feel like psychoanalytic feminists would have a field day with this page. I can already hear Kristeva lurking somewhere in the background.
I read her Powers of Horror: An Essay on Abjection and liked it a lot. It didn't seem like it's skewed toward the feminist side of things. I thought her analysis was pretty balanced.I like the "One ball always hangs a little lower than the other."
Nathan did read it and I "liked" his review. I've been chasing so many books in the last couple of weeks and reading up on reviews, I forgot. Sorry, Nathan.
Aloha wrote: "One ball always hangs a little lower than the other"and very visual it is... Kudos to Mr Gass, he got that one really right
When do you plan on reading The Tunnel, Aloha? I'm only about 150 pages in but I'm already placing it in my arbitrarily defined canon of Favourite Books.
That will have to be my next book of the encyclopedic category. When can I squeeze it in? IDK. One of my goals is to read the top books in the encyclopedic list that was in the essay. I have a heavy reading plan ahead of me from hanging out with you guys. I'll have to see how I prioritize everything depending on what's going on at the moment. This is all self-taught and by whims. My whimsical nose led me to you guys, so I'll let it lead me some more. I have a crazy month with my sister flying in this week and several birthdays, and my social life is picking up again with friends knocking on my reclusive door. I'm amazed at the ability of friends to still stay in touch with me. Looks like I'll be making lots of trips into NYC this month! I should buy a train pass.I started Women and Men, which is complex! The passages can't be absorbed in one passing. I love the flow of consciousness associated with the birthing scene, from the point of view of a complex and intelligent woman, which leads me to think that it is better to have a brain that only sings "Duke of Earl" when you're in the middle of an intense situation.

BTW, anybody noticed that they ape the writing style of books they're reading in their posts? I'm starting to flow-of-conscious more and I need to go to the birthing part of this forum once I've completed my thoughts on this. My eyeballs are starting the Choor Monster section but my thoughts are still back in the birthing scene since I can connect with that experience. Ha! I'll do a flow-of-consciousness review of this book.
In the second passing of the flow-of-consciousness above, all the I's will be removed, "Duke, Duke, Duke of I's, Duke, Duke, Duke of I, Duke, Duke, Duke of I...."
My copy came in! It was withdrawn from the Niles Community Library in Niles, Michigan. It looks like it hasn't been checked out in years. The check out card said May 6, 1987, but no check out stamps. It's in good condition. The book reads better in book form than in eBook, although I wouldn't give up the eBook version. I like to arm myself with as many versions as I can to catch all the nuances.

Nice, congrats. I checked it the other day and, jumping the gun, almost bought 'Women and Men Hardcover Dust Jacket' for around $10. Then I realized it was just the dust jacket and not the book. Glad I read before firing off my money.

Jonathan wrote: "It's kind of weird that the Dalkey paperback, on average, is going for more than the signed and numbered first editions."I have never seen the Dalkey paperback so far, only the signed hardcover
It might be that the later editions contain a couple more stories that were missing from the first editions. I have to check to see whether I have them somewhere.

Jonathan wrote: "I'm not sure we are to think of these things as missing from W&M so much as cut on purpose and then later released on their own, right?"Cut would be the word I'd use. I haven't heard any struggles-with-editor stories. These two pieces amount to less than perhaps 50 W&M pages, so I'm not sure if it was a novelistic decision or needed to keep it from ballooning into two volumes. The ARC's sent out were two-volumed. But selling a two volume novel would have been even more difficult than a single 1191 page brick.
I think I'm getting a handle as to what the book is about. When I'm done with the book, I'll read the supplementary materials to see whether they add to the content.
For anyone in or around L.A.: UCLA has two copies sitting around, unloved. (And I've my own copy, so don't worry about me.)

So the real Q is: Do I abandon the bricks I'm hitting currently? (Meaning, GR, J R, and a few others that are already too demanding!) Or should I just take W&M on since the-more-the-merrier?
Eric wrote: "So the real Q is: Do I abandon the bricks I'm hitting currently? (Meaning, GR, J R, and a few others that are already too demanding!)."Don't sweat it. Finish those up first. We've got a number of people that won't be starting until Nov/Dec. We are also crossing our fingers about a new print run for next summer so there might even be some really late starters. Our intention is to keep the group running as long as folks are reading, whenever they happen to start. I think only 3 or 4 of us have begun this month; several others had begun a few months ago before the group formed.
Ill be starting late November/early December I think. I need a break from dense tomes after The Tunnel. I may try to squeeze in Life: A User's Manual before then, though. Right now Bernhard is rocking my world.

I would like to read some more of his. Read Correction month or two ago and was very impressed (Concrete was good, too, but does not in my opinion come close to the former).

Amazon currently has two hardcover copies going for around $40 right now, someone should jump on that (because if there is one still one there after my next paycheck i will)
Do you want me to get it for you, Penkevich? I'll save it until your next paycheck, then you can reimburse me. Or PM me your address and I'll have Amazon ship it to you directly.
I really appreciate the offer, that is very kind! but I'll leave it on the table for others right now. I still have two-thirds of Infinite Jest to polish off before I could get to this book anyways, so I'll keep my eyes open in the future. Just figured I'd alert everyone. I could afford it, but I did just order The Beetle Leg hardcover right before seeing W&M posted, so I had to resist for once ha.
s.penkevich wrote: "Amazon currently has two hardcover copies going for around $40 right now, someone should jump on that (because if there is one still one there after my next paycheck i will)"There's still one up there at that price. $45 with shipping. Were W&M published today in hd, it would most likely be priced right about there.

Excellent! You..."
Absolutely!
From Dalkey:
"Sorry. The author asked for reversion of rights, but no other publisher wanted to do it. I'm told it will soon be available as an e-book."

The books I'm into recently can be gotten for pennies in pristine condition. I was surprised that the hardbacks of Le Ton Beau De Marot: In Praise Of The Music Of Language were in like new condition for pennies. I purchased three, one to look pretty on the shelf, one as a gift, and one to take apart and scan to put into my iPad for easy enlargement of the type, highlighting and making notes. It was hard taking apart the least pristine book.
