s.penkevich [mental health hiatus] (spenkevich) | 18 comments Well, the difficulty of finding this book for an affordable price did have one positive side-effect: Night Soul and Other Stories is now in the mail on a journey to my house. So hopefully that will be a good McElroy prep until I find a copy. The university library has one that appears to have been checked out indefinitely. I'm may pester some friends at different schools to track down a copy.

Can I put you down for being interested in purchasing a pb next June should Dzanc make a small print run?

The story The Unknown Kid in Night Soul is a chapter cut from W&M. I hope you enjoy the stories.

Vilma (vaalkyrjaa) Please pm me ("N.R.") or make a note in this thread if you are interested in purchasing a print copy of Women & Men if it becomes available in the coming months, most likely next June. I would like to provide Mr Wickett with number in a few day's time.

Hi, I am definitely interested too, depending on the price that is as it would include shipping to Europe too b/c that is where I am from and live. I have seen some single copies flooding around but for me those are at the moment out of reach. I am just a poor student :( ...and dont have an ereader neither want one ^^

Yes, definitely put me down for that. I really want to read it, especially after seeing your praise of it. Thanks for the link, it seems the college in the town I live has a copy. I'll try to get someone there to possibly find it for me, or I may have to preform some Mission Impossible raid to procure it... But either way, if they do a print I'm buying one, because it will look so pretty all highlighted and dog eared on my shelf.

It's great to see a new face on goodreads interested in this over-sized book! Welcome, Vilma. I think the earliest that we'll see a new printing of the book will be next June. I would guess that the price should be under $30US. I'll put your name down.

Unfortunately, I don't see any copies available in Norwegian libraries. The closest would be in Denmark and Germany.

message 57: by Vilma (new)

Vilma (vaalkyrjaa) Hi Nathan, thanks :) I couldnt find it anywhere until now but in the States which is huge turn off, just too damn expensive *sigh* but 30 bucks plus shipping sounds marvellous so count me in please. I have seen you bombared Dalkey about it already - that made me smile as I am a huge fan of their stuff.

Only six months ago it was easy to get a copy for under $50US. What happened? Dalkey used to publish it but let it go out of print. Presently Dzanc Books is planning to issue McEloy's back catalog (Robert Coover's too) in e-format next June, plus a few print editions. Hopefully we can demonstrate sufficient demand to justify a print run for W&M. In the past month alone more than 25 people on goodreads have marked it as "to-read." And they won't be finding a copy, affordable, soon.

Don't say "Dalkey" too loudly or you'll be bombarded with Friend Requests. ; )

Just to aid with my rationalising process, what is the most you guys would pay for a signed copy of this book? Cause I'm seriously considering forking over the hundred. Something about the first few pages of this book make me all tingly.

Aloha | 497 comments IDK. Nathan would say to mortgage your house because it's worth every penny, or sell your first born child.

Daggum it, you guys make me want to drop the Gravity's Dhalgren Rainbow I'm reading.

Second born, maybe. I'm banking on having the opportunity to have him sign my entire McElroy library in the near future. BUT, if I knew it was unavailable and worth it and I had a LOT of collector's blood in my veins, I might fork over a fair amount of money. $150 for signed 1st/1st in today's market is almost within the realm of possibility. But I will not tell anyone what to do with their monies. But I will assist you with your rationalizing process. But, at the end of the proverbial day, it's just words and those words will always somehow be always available. This book ain't gunna disappear. On the other hand, you have your grandchildren to think of.

I'm with you here, Bonnie. And since I have started reading ebooks, I have ended up buying physical copies of ebooks that I loved, thus exacerbating by shelf space crisis and providing even more revenue for publishers and bookstore.

I have to start reading shampoo bottles now - that's good reading time previously gone to waste. (Going off to add shampoo bottle to GR to-read shelf with Bonnie as recommender.)

Lol, great idea Kris. Remember Ulises Lima reading while showering? See, shampoo bottle literature could be vastly improved if they would print bits of novels or short stories. But a waterproof ereader would be great too.

message 72: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 497 comments I just got Paul Auster's signatures on The Brooklyn Follies and The New York Trilogy. I didn't realize he was going to be there so I hunted every stand and found a couple of used paperbacks. Not the hardbacks I'd like to collect, but beats having him sign a napkin. I would take pictures with him, but there were two other authors sitting next to him, so I took his picture, instead.

BTW, this was at the Brooklyn Book Festival.

There was a mix-up with the postage prices, so I'm emailing the seller, and I've asked if it's inconvenient for him to send a picture of the signature. If he does, I'll post it here.

message 90: by Nathan "N.R.", James Mayn (new)

Nathan "N.R." Gaddis (nathannrgaddis) | 662 comments I sent the following email to Dzanc Books this morning:

Dan-
Thank you again for being willing to consider our request for a print edition of Women and Men. I understand that there are many factors involved in your decision. I would ask that I might offer a few observations from my point of view, some of which will perhaps already be familiar to you.

Our reading group on goodreads, formed a week ago, now has 33 members, seven of whom have indicated that they are interested in purchasing a print copy should you decide to publish one next summer. I understand that that is a rather meager number, but I have reason to believe that more people will be discovering McElroy's fiction in the coming years, thanks in part to Dzanc Books re-issuing his back catalog as well as his forth-coming novel Cannonball.

On goodreads, as I mentioned last week, 224 people have marked Women and Men as "to-read." Of that number, over two dozen have marked it as such in the past month alone.

Two relatively recent articles making the rounds on the internet have produced a renewed interest in McElroy's big novel. Garth Risk Hallberg's article from 2009, The Lost Postmodernist: Joseph McElory [http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/jacke...] and the recent Publishers Weekly article, The Top 10 Most Difficult Books, from August [http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by...] have both garnered a significant degree of attention. As readers are discovering the difficult postmodernist novels--The Recognitions, Gravity's Rainbow, Infinite Jest--they are looking for the next big reading challenge.

Just this month a new wikipedia entry was created for Women and Men:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_an...

As I noted last week, the prices being asked for both the hardcover and paperback of Women & Men has skyrocketed in the past few months. A friend had purchased a hardcover edition in July for $22.42 from abebooks. Today, the lowest price ranges from $100-150. However, I discovered two library copies being sold today for $25 each, which indicates that libraries are not retaining this book. Indeed, our reading group is having difficulties procuring copies from many libraries, especially our European readers.

The preference for a print edition of a huge novel like Women and Men seems counter-intuitive. This bulky novel would seem to be a perfect candidate for e-publication, taking the weight off of one's wrists. However, many readers who are interested in this novel desire to have it, as it were, as a trophy on their shelf. Bragging rights accrue when that spine is seen sitting upon one's shelf, bragging rights which simply cannot accrue to an ebook.

Readers in my corner of goodreads--we read the innovative and experimental and "difficult" books--tend to be a loyal readership. Many of us tend to choose our next book simply because it appeared in Dalkey Archive's catalog. It is my understanding that Dzanc Books is also publishing works which will appeal to this demographic. Your quick attention to our inquiry last week has already earned Dzanc a good deal of respect among our circle.

I first learned about Dzanc Books with the announcement of the re-issue of the Coover catalog and his Brunist sequel. If your decision to support Coover's and McElroy's works is an indication of the quality and nature of your catalog, I am eager to learn more about the new or unfamiliar authors you are publishing. Please do add my email address to your mailing list. I will be sure to offer my support to Dzanc as you yourselves support some of our greatest novelists.

Thank you again, Dan, for taking the time to hear our request,

Nathan

message 91: by Nathan "N.R.", James Mayn (new)

Nathan "N.R." Gaddis (nathannrgaddis) | 662 comments Dzanc has been very willing to consider a print run of Women and Men on our behalf. I think they deserve our patronage. In addition to the McElroy catalog re-issue, they are also re-issuing much of Robert Coover's catalog as well as two new books from him next year. Take a few moments, you Dalkey-addicts, and see what Dzanc might have to offer:
http://www.dzancbooks.org/

Meanwhile, a few notes here and there, of thanks or eagerness or inquiries, etc, to Dzanc might be in order. Contact info:
http://www.dzancbooks.org/about-dzanc/

My understanding is that Dzanc has rights for a paper edition, and since Dalkey's not been responding, I'm thinking that they are out of the running on this one.
