I have Parallel Stories and was about to read it several times. I have a couple of topics I'm obsessed about this year and can't break away from my momentum.

Advanced uncorrected proofs, the two-volume thing, for US$40 :: http://www.bibliopolis.com/main/books...

It's good to hear that you're enjoying McElroy's big book. We look forward to hearing more of your thoughts.

I like to slum through the book sections of thrift stores. Prices are cheap and I always feel like they won't know one of these expensive cult classics if they get one in.
Jason- Sounds like a combination of diligence and good fortune put a pretty sweet book in your hands for a good price. I'm still on the hunt, but I think one of these days I'll find it.
What a terrific find, Jason. I'm enjoying your comments in the other sections, BTW. I need to refocus my mind back to W&M in order to contribute.
That's an amazing find Jason. And a great price for a first edition. It's amazing just how much certain booksellers want to charge for first editions. I was recently in one of my favourite used bookshop haunts, and a hardcover first edition of Gravity's Rainbow was on display for $1300. I've wanted a first edition of that book for as long as I can remember, but... that's just a little out of my price range.
I would love an ebook but i can't find it anywhere. I have some sights they have it as a digital download but I don't trust the sites.
You can definitely find rare books at low prices if you shop used stores and Good Will stores regularly. It doesn't surprise me a brick and mortar store would have this book at that price because they don't necessarily reprise books like that. You can't keep up with every rare book price. Plus they need to sell it and probably know there are only one or two people in the area who might be looking for a book like Women and Men. My best rare 1st Ed., 1st printing Find was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for $2. I sold it for $450. You never know.
Enjoy, Matthew. We'll get a few more BREATHERS yet! Freddy (Jonathan) is starting again. I vouch for him as a great reading buddy.
the ereader i found doesn't give a percentage of how far in i'm in so i'll have to just comment on chapter discussion when i finish them.
found a better one that has a percentage thing. I can use it to go forward and back. its called magic scroll.
I'm still waiting to hear about a release date for Dzanc's ebook of Women & Men. I would like to put it in your mind that if you are reading the ePub which is floating around that you consider purchasing the ebook from Dzanc when it is released. There would be a number reasons for doing so. Top of that list is that it may be the best version of the W&M text since it has been entirely reset and edited with Joe himself having proofed the galleys. Also, it shouldn't cost too much and it'll support Dzanc, a house which is doing the right thing by making much of McElroy available again, and it'll put a few dimes in Joe's pocket, whether he needs them or not. Just a thought, not an arm-twist.

Whenever they decide to release the ebook, I'll fork over the funds.

I can't pretend to understand the used book market, but the pricing at amazon for used, both pb and hd, copies of W&M is rather odd. Over a dozen copies hovering around the US$70 mark. My guess is that sellers are watching their prices of W&M more closely; hedging against a drop in demand once the ebook is released and the eventuality (we cross our fingers and pray as angels) of a print edition. So, either the prices will shortly sky-rocket or they will continue to edge down. There seem to be quite a few copies available at the moment. I think it's worth the current prices, but I don't have to buy one; but I do think that US$40-50 would be reasonable, given that that would likely be its price were it published today (in hd, first edition, etc).
Joe confirmed a third print edition of W&M is forthcoming. He didn't mention anything about a date, but it's good news nonetheless.
Justin wrote: "Joe confirmed a third print edition of W&M is forthcoming. He didn't mention anything about a date, but it's good news nonetheless."That is GREAT news.

And Justin, if you have personal contact with Joe ;; two question/comments ;; one) is he planning any readings for Cannonball and two) please let him know that his books are being read and enjoyed in the deepest possible sense. thnks.
Nathan, I will do my best to find out about any readings/book tours. I can say that I know he is planning on spending the month of August at home. I only recently began a correspondence; I have and will continue to let him know how much his works are appreciated. The best thing we can do is continue to buy his books, and encourage others to do the same--preferably in a public manner.
Found a 1st. edition hardcover in the library bookstore near my office for $1. Felt unreal.Snagged it up to give to my best friend (I got my copy back a long time ago when they were under 15 bucks on Amazon).
FOUR (4) copies of the hd available at amazon for under US$10.50+shipping :: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listin...GO NOW!!!!!!
amazon's got two hd's listed today @ US$40+shipping. One of the sellers had a $10 copy up yesterday. $40 is a very good price given what W&M has cost for the past year, but prices may come down in general and Dzanc may have a print edition on the horizon :: buy 'em if you can afford 'em and if you need 'em::http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listin...
Here is an exchange I had last night with the likely Twitter feed(unverified) of McElroy:@watrwake how far along is the ebook of Women and Men? Is there a possible print edition in the works?
@h2oetry The e-bk text will be ready next week, tho not quite ready to be released. A 3rd print edition to follow, as far as I know.

Yep. I think our opinion in these parts is that it's an authentic Joe twitter thing.
Last I heard from Dan @ Dzance (Joe's publisher) the e-book would be available around end of August ;; I would expect him to make an announcement here in the group when it's available. And too he had only indicated that Dzanc is finally at least talking about a print edition ;; I'm hopeful and I think Joe is too, but I've not heard a definitively satisfying announcement of such a wonderful eventuality. At present, Dzanc is doing print editions of only Cannonball and Ancient History. Everything else will be Dzanc'd in ebook, roughly maybe by the end of the year.
The last time I asked Dan from Dzanc about the 3rd print edition he gave a pretty encouraging answer. I'm hoping we will see it but I suspect the run will be fairly small.
Today, two copies of W&M (hd) popped up on amazon for US$50+shipping ;; one without dustjacket, one ex-libris. But they are cheaper than the recent low price of US$70 to 75.I still have no update on the Dzanc ebook or pb.
And for those of you that want to go the Open Library route to download the book as pdf or ebup, here it is (and currently shows as available for download):https://openlibrary.org/works/OL43013...
Nathan "N.R." wrote: "Today, two copies of W&M (hd) popped up on amazon for US$50+shipping ;; one without dustjacket, one ex-libris. One is under the 'collectible' tab ;; and the one from goodwill sounds like it is in better condition than the other two.
Okay yes I know that it's not "cheap" ; but let's put things in context for a moment. The price of this tome is L-E-G-E-N-D-A-I-R-E-E.at the moment, there is a NEW Dalkey pb of W&M for sale at amazon for the low=low price of US$99.00+shipping. That compares with the other NEW Dalkey pb for sale at $61,064.15+shipping (and insurance one would like to presume). I kid you knot.

Also :: at abebooks, a two volume, uncorrected proof of W&M can be had for US$90+shipping. Or :: A Dalkey pb for $100+free shipping.
OR -- get this -- one of 99 signed, leather-bound copies for the (really!) low price of $100+shipping.

Yes, indeed, I do keep an eye on the W&M market -- at least until Dzanc gets around to issuing their either e- or print reissue.
Wow! It's tempting to sell my copy. All of my McElroy are now signed. Good thing I have a job that keeps me fed, even if it's kicking my tired ass. Nah, wouldn't sell it even if I was broke. Huge sentimental value since I'm fond of the man after meeting him. I still have a huge crush on that octogenarian. The sexiest octogenarian I've ever met.
Matthew wrote: "when it finally happens i'm broke."It'll happen again. Or at the latest Dzanc will get their edition released. But meanwhile, stay tune'd to this thread.
There's a used hardcover on sale on Amazon for $77.22 + shipping. "Has dust jacket with moderate wear, a few tears, one about 2" long. Has publisher overstock mark on the bottom edge. Binding is solid." As long as you don't mind that, go for it.
I picked up a signed/first of Ancient History because the Dzanc delays were bugging me and because I'd had my eye on this one for some time. But I'm not here to talk about myself....The prices of copies of Women and Men are legendary. Not causing any alarums, but I have no word on the releases by Dzanc of Joe's early books as ebooks. The pb of Ancient History is currently scheduled for March 18.
In general, for those impatient or those who prefer bound books ; I'd suggest keeping your eye on your favorite used=book listings (amazon, abe, etc) for that moment when something affordable pops up. In general, Joe's early books are a good deal at anything under US$50. Quick rundown of my market impressions ::
Smuggler's Bible -- hd is collectors only ; pb is affordable
Hind's Kidnap -- hd @ US$50+ ; pb (only rumors I've heard)
Ancient History -- hd @ US$35+ ; pb forthcoming from Dzanc
Plus -- both hd & pb @ US$60+
Women & Men -- today's low is US$75 for the pb from amazon
Letter, Actress, Cannonball, Night Soul are all affordable. Depending on the condition of the book and what it is you need (collectors copy or readers copy) most anything below the prices I've indicated above could be a good deal. But unless the price is insane, do be sure that you're satisfactorily confident in the seller's description (especially if you avoid ex-libris, etc).
I'm usually clueless as to the collector's value of a book. I like to collect books because the content appeals to me, or how it looks. A hardback is more sculptural than a paperback. As Joe was going through his books that I own, he pointed out that the hb of Smuggler's Bible I had is going for a great price. I have to try to make my collection of his books complete, in hb if possible. Nothing to do with money but more of a sentimental value.
Aloha wrote: "I have to try to make my collection of his books complete, in hb if possible. Nothing to do with money but more of a sentimental value. "Call it what you will ; justify it how you will ;; but you've been bitten!
We did it!!We made abebooks list of "The top 100 most searched for out-of-print books in 2013" -- #90 is Women & Men!

Market update ::The pb which used to be for sale for US$70 is gone.
What we have now are several hd's available for US$70, in various conditions, at amazon :: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listin...
abebooks has one copy at that price :: http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/Searc...
Still feels pricey to me. But I've not seen anything cheaper for the past few months. Maybe you have a B-day on the horizon....?
