Aloha | 497 comments I would be that demented.

Kris (krisrabberman) | 23 comments Nick, I think you have excellent grounds for a civil suit bc of pain and suffering. If the jury has bibliophiles on it, you'll be set for life.

I just may have to do that."

I think the Cannibal Corpse route would be more spiritually satisfying. Aloha and I can play the role of your disemboweling zombies.

I think Nick qualifies for both.

Aloha | 497 comments I just checked on my order. I placed the order yesterday and they still have not told me that it's been shipped. For an Amazon seller, this is slow. I'm getting worried. I'm suspicious. Who would work at a book store? A book lover. Who would want to snatch this gem? A book lover working in a book store. You can't trust anybody!

I took a look at the book and joined this group because I've seen Gouey's work in person. I met the man behind Ultramarine Press, Chris Stephens, years ago at his used bookstore, Riverrun Rare Books in Hastings-On-Hudson. My interest came from his connection with Samuel R. Delany. I bought my Dragon Press SRD books from him. He also did limited signed small runs of Delany's autobiography in full and quarter leather. Dennis Gouey hand binds the text block from the original edition. A signed limitation page is added to the material. It was a long time ago (pre-Ebay days), but I remember being very impressed with the books, though I decided to go for the regular edition of Delany's book because it was a lot cheaper.

Aloha | 497 comments Welcome, Dave! Good to see you here.

message 108: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 497 comments That seller still have not confirmed they've shipped the book. Is it missing? Are they scouring the place for it? The suspense is killing me! I don't really bite my nails, but if I do, my fingers would be stumps by now.

message 109: by Stephen M, Tome Terminator (new)

Stephen M | 81 comments Nick that is a crime. My sincerest apologies.

Nathan I forgot to thank you for your wonderful correspondence with Dzanc. The work you're doing here is just fantastic. This website is so amazing. Ugh.... (throws more positive, overused adjectives at everyone in this group and Nathan and the people who first thought of goodreads).

This is my favorite "how I learned about W&M" story so far. Book binding and book crafting is an under-recognized art form. I'm tempted to pick up one those 99 leather bound, signed editions.

Does making your own handcrafted books count? I use cardboard, make artsy covers and bind it with string and twig.

message 114: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 497 comments Whoo-hoo!!! I've just been notified that W&M have shipped!!! I'm almost 2/3 into Skippy Dies. I need to write 3 reviews, then it's to W&M! And I'm all alone this weekend so I can focus. Yay!!! Only a geek girl would be happy she's dateless on a weekend.

message 115: by Stephen M, Tome Terminator (new)

Stephen M | 81 comments Awesome Aloha! I can't wait till you get it in the mail. It's like the best part of the whole deal because it's so freakin' huge. Ha, the book is a tome if I've ever seen one.

message 116: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 497 comments You should try the geek girl part. It might bring out a different perspective to life. I could have gone out with a doctor. Doctor? Books? Books! Easy choice.

message 117: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 497 comments They're all hidden inside reading, gaming, and puzzling. LOL.

message 118: by David (new)

David Merrill | 31 comments Dang, I've been bit. I started my search for this book tonight. I checked the Savers and Good Will. Does anyone know what the original print run was on it? I'm wondering how unrealistic my search is. There's a good library book sale this weekend I'm going to try.

message 119: by Nathan "N.R.", James Mayn (new)

Nathan "N.R." Gaddis (nathannrgaddis) | 662 comments David wrote: "I'm wondering how unrealistic my search is."

I spent two and more years with W&M on my shopping list before I was lucky enough to receive a used book alert from my village bookshop. Other than that copy, I've only ever seen it on a bookshop shelf one other time. But you know that there must be copies sitting on dusty shelves somewhere, fully unrecognized as the highly sought after volume which it is. Keep the eyes peeled.

The hardcover did receive a second print run; both must have been fairly small. Dalkey ran the paperback years later, but I've no clue how many they printed.

message 120: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 497 comments Good luck with the library sale, Dave. BTW, check your eMail.

Awesome! In that case, I'll bring my Gregg Press Dhalgren with the custom DJ I designed. We can compare which one is bigger and uglier. Thanks for the e-mail too!

message 123: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 497 comments We can fight off muggers with these!

message 124: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 497 comments Or maybe we'd take the hit rather than dent these books.

message 125: by Declan (new)

Declan There won't be another Dalkey edition of the book because of the ebook rights having been sold by McElroy's agent to Dzanc. It's their baba now.

message 126: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 497 comments Maybe that's why the Dalkey edition prices shot up.

message 127: by Nathan "N.R.", James Mayn (new)

I wasn't sure how that worked, but that was the sense I was getting. Shame on Dalkey for letting this one lapse. That's what I understood to be their whole raisin d'etre, to keep thing in print.

message 128: by Declan (new)

Declan Well my understanding is that by the time a reprint could have been considered the agent had acted in a way which made that impossible and to judge from your correspondence, I would say that a new print edition is unlikely be published by Dzanc either except, perhaps, through print-on-demand .

*me being confused who has found a physical copy of W&M and who has not, sorry

No, I was talking about my bulky Gregg Press Dhalgren.

No luck on finding Women and Men at the library book sale today. I did find a hardcover copy of House of Leaves to replace my falling apart paperback, though.

message 132: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 497 comments Ooh, nice find. I love my copy of HoL. I wish I can find a better looking hardback of Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid. I have the old edition. I'll have to see whether the 20th anniversary edition comes in hardback.

That means I can take you off my list of people who should rot in hell for all eternity.

message 134: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 497 comments I'm going into hiding. BTW, did you see me post that I snagged A Smuggler's Bible, hardback 1966 first edition for 77 cents? The next price up is 30 dollars all the way to 150 dollars for a hardback.

message 135: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 497 comments I scoured the web for a HB of Women and Men for a reasonable price. Couldn't find one. I did treat myself to a like new HB of Actress in the House for 4 cents. I'm gathering up a collection of McElroy hardbacks.

message 136: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 497 comments And I was hoping to find a HB and post the link here, not to hoard all the McElroy HBs for myself. One Women and Men HB is enough for me.

message 137: by [deleted user] (new)

here's a series of photos I took this afternoon.

okay y'know, it might not be women & men because... really? that big?

yeah wow. that is an awful lot of packaging.

shit, seriously? it's a pretty hot day, i'm starting to sweat.

i don't...

ah yeah. totally worth it.

message 138: by Stephen M, Tome Terminator (new)

Stephen M | 81 comments Ha, that's great. Was it way bigger than you were expecting? I couldn't believe how big mine was when I got it.

Your edition looks like it is in such pristine condition. Congrats man, that's quite a thing to own right there.

message 139: by [deleted user] (new)

It's massive, but roughly the same size as my first ed. of Against The Day so not too big of a shock.

It is shiny and pristine. It was advertised as 'very good' but it obviously hasn't been read.

message 140: by Vilma (new)

Vilma (vaalkyrjaa) Great pics Sean :) W&M looking pretty nice too. And if you are the first reader of it I am even more impressed. Is it one of the signed copies?

message 141: by [deleted user] (new)

It is indeed signed. I feel a little guilty opening it up to read.

message 142: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 497 comments Very nice, Sean! Would you mind posting the signature? Thank you for posting the pics. I'm still waiting for my "good" condition book to come. I wonder what "good" means. But it's a library copy, so it should have good binding. I have two other McElroy hardbacks coming in, too. I love having a collection mission.

message 143: by Nathan "N.R.", James Mayn (new)

Nathan "N.R." Gaddis (nathannrgaddis) | 662 comments For those who go for this kind of thing, amazon just made available for pre-order McElroy's forth-coming novel, Cannonball (paperback), and his third novel, Ancient History (paperback):

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_nos...

Dzanc policy, I believe, is to include a free ebook copy when ordering print books directly from them.

Both books are slated for June 11, 2013 publication.

message 144: by David (new)

David Merrill | 31 comments Loved the pics! Thanks for "opening" it with us. One of the uglier packaging jobs I've seen, but at least it was sturdy.

One of my ugliest book packaging experiences was a book being shipped to me in a Stove Top Stuffing box. Fortunately, the book wasn't all that special just a cheap paperback.

message 145: by [deleted user] (new)

Aloha, there's a picture of the signature in my 'review' of the book.

I wish they were still wrapping things in beautiful decorative paper, like when the Impressionists were influenced by the Japanese hand made paper that was used to wrap packages.

It is posted from the seller so it's the same as the copy I have.
