Night Reigns (Immortal Guardians, #2) by Dianne Duvall
review

This is Book 2 of the Immortal Guardians series.
The story starts off action packed right away with Ami returning some movies and then finds herself in the middle of a vampire attack on an Immortal.
Ami is an amazing female who can kick some ass and we are left wondering just what is she because she is not an Immortal, not a vampire, and not a gifted one.
Ami wins the heart of Marcus who has been in mourning for eight years over a woman who was never his to begin with.
I really enjoyed the action in this book and how Marcus who thought he would never love again, comes to realize that he truly never has loved until he falls in love with Ami.
The only thing I didn't care for was Ami not being honest with Marcus as to what she was once they fell in love, I mean really how did she think she could keep it from him.
When the book ended it left a lot of things not yet resolved and I can't wait to get my hands on the next book to see what happens next.

Sandra | 25910 comments Grimspace (Sirantha Jax, #1) by Ann Aguirre
Kick-ass Heroine Shelf
18/9/12 ★★★★★

Siriantha Jax has the J gene, which means she can navigate space ships through Grimspace. Grimspace, can be folded to make trips much shorter and is made up of unknowable colours and patterns. It is beautiful but deadly, many Jumpers just burn out and die, but not Siri.

We meet Siri as she comes to in a Corp med facility after the crash of the Sargasso losing 80 odd people. She is the only survivor and the Corp is intent on breaking her so she takes all the blame, as some of the dead were Galactic heroes.

She is sprung from the facility by March, who she's never met or heard of before and is justifiably wary of him and his agenda.

What follows is a great chase, nasty aliens, fending off bounty hunters and lots of death.

Very interested to see where the next book takes us.

I'll put my Oct 2 pre-order in next week. Use my credit card's bonus points -- I'm ordering at least four books with that release date. And if they all qualify for the 4-for-3, that's even better. :)

Shelf: kick-ass-heroine
Book: Glory in Death by J.D. Robb
date read: 9/19/2012
rating: 4 stars

Second book of the “In Death” series and this was even better than the first one. I'm starting to get seriously hooked on here!
Two murders, both victims were beautiful and highly successful women. Their glamorous lives and loves were the talk of the city and then the third murder that went sort of wrong …
Once again our kick-ass-heroine Eve Dallas has to catch the murderer before he gets to her friends and threatens her own life.
Very good mystery as always, love the characters and the futuristic world of 2058 is absolutely fascinating.
I must say that I'm not a big time mystery reader because I get annoyed if the plot is predictable and I can guess right away who did it. J.D.Robb knows how to make twists and turns and keep the reader guessing and then there are Eve and Roarke. Both characters are very well written and just perfectly mysterious themselves. I liked how Eve started to open up and admits her feelings and then there was THE question asked by Roarke at the very last page of the book …
I guess I must get my hands on the third book soon!

Sue (knitwitsl) | 96 comments Well, I'm in a reading funk :-( I've been reading Samson's Lovely Mortal for another challenge, but I am not enjoying it. It received good ratings, but I am just frustrated with it and I'm only 35% through. So then I picked up my book for this challenge, Grave Memory. I'm 80% through with it, but just not enjoying it. Then I realized that I was reading my free space book first, and switched to Here Kitty, Kitty!. I'm almost 20% done and it's just going okay. So I figure it has to be me, which just frustrated me more! But, I will finish my kick-ass-heroine book as quick as I can (I hope to have it done before the next shelf announcement), and then I'll be that much closer to finishing my free shelf! I'm not picking up that other book until maybe later next week. I have until September 30th to finish it, and I think it's going to take me that long to get through it! Here's hoping that my pick for the next shelf is something that I enjoy so much I fly through it in a day or two!

I haven't had a reading funk in quite sometime, but I know that they are hard to get out of sometimes. Hopefully the next shelf that gets called will help pull you out of it :(

Widow’s Web (Elemental Assassin, #7) by Jennifer Estep

review
Gin is thrown off balance in this book by the return of Owen's fiancee Salina.
When it comes to Salina, Owen is wearing blinders and it's left up to Gin to get Owen to see Salina for what she really is.

We get to learn more about Owen's past and see Gin struggle to not be insecure in her relationship with Owen.
I also liked how Gin's sister Bria is more accepting of Gin's choices and of course how her family and friends rally around Gin and give her the support she needs in tough times.

I want to continue raving about this book, but don't want to give away any spoilers. I can say the end does leaving you hanging a bit.

I absolutely love this series and eagerly await the next book which isn't until April 2013.

Sandra | 25910 comments Kitty's Big Trouble (Kitty Norville, #9) by Carrie Vaughn
Free Space from the SOS Bookshelf
19/9/12 ★★★★

Kitty Norville books just seem to flow and are therefore quick, easy reads, but still are full of action and intrigue.

Kitty becomes obsessed with possible supernatural historical figures and this sees her, Ben and Cormac travelling to Dodge, looking for a possible vampire nest which was supposed to be burned down by Wyatt Earp 140 yrs ago. And they find it and a dessicated old vamp as well.

Whilst there Anastasia phones and requests their presence in SanFran to stop Roman gaining access to an ancient artifact. This story is full on Chinatown meets the tunnels and Chinese mythology.

Looks like there will eventually be a war between Roman and his army and everyone else with Kitty playing a major part. She is gathering her allies and trying to bolster her courage.

Next for Kitty is a trip to London to speak at a conference.

Book: Stormwalker (Stormwalker, #1) by Allyson James
Date read: 19/09/12
Rating: ★★★★

I really enjoyed this book, its the first book i've read by this author and i'll definitely be continuing the series.

I don't know what I was expecting going in to this but it was very different to what I got.
There were so many different magical creatures/Humans in this book a lot of them I hadn't encountered in other books, which was a nice change. I was never sure who was on the good side, i'm still not 100% on some of them, I enjoyed the Navajo setting as well.

Sandra | 25910 comments Yay Elishia, I thought it was pretty unique as well.

Book #4 Nightwalker (Stormwalker, #4) by Allyson James is out on the 23 Sept, I think only in ebook/kindle format, as she's been forced to go Indie.

You're kidding! :(

I just checked her blog -- print versions for this one will be available (she hopes) shortly after. *phew* I'll buy it, even if it's tradeback. I bought her self-pub'ed Captain Lacey books.

So only her Shifter Unbound series (which has a book out 2 Oct) and her historical romance series are being traditionally pub'ed.

Interesting that she's giving it a week to be available in print form following the ebook. Especially as it was with the editor on 18 Sept. Maybe it'll be print-on-demand or something?
