Kira Jeppesen
Kira Jeppesen asked:

Why is his name Fiske? It means fishing in Danish.... I hate it when authors do this,,, because when I read it in English and suddenly there is a danish word it just throws me off and it contributes to me liking the book less... it sucks, cuz this sounds awesome!!!

Cassandra It is a common practice for names to come from job and trade titles. Smith is a common name and its a job. Fisher is also a common name. Commoners never really had last names until recently, and most last names derive from job titles. Sam the Fisher turns into Sam Fisher. Only the wealthy land owners had last names to mark heritage and lineage for land disputes. Adrienne Young acknowledges the names meaning and origin. Fiske's name was chosen with purpose ;)
Kristin Fiske is a real name. I understand that it's also a word, but that seems like a readers preference. For instance, Hunter in English is a name AND a word, but it doesn't throw me off. It's all how you personally read it.

Kieran If that bothers you it might also be worth noting that the slave class is called 'dyr', which is animal in Dansk. I know a fair amount of Danish but didn't find the very small use of it in the book distracting. Edit: I only saw after posting this that you are Danish. Undskyld.
Abigail Adrienne Young was trying to enrich the historical setting of Sky in the Deep. I do not know why you would pick up a book that does not take place in contemporary America if you cannot handle foreign cultures and languages.
Night-Mere When you read the book. you realise why his name is Fiske. Don't let it put you off reading it.
Sonja It means the same thing in Norwegian but it reads as a name and this book is one worth reading! It does not disappoint and Adrienne delivers a beautiful and strong spirited story.
Christina Canfield I'm sorry a Scandinavian Viking was not named Chad
Zay Well I don't really care about that but you are correct, this book is awesome! When i first read it I was hooked and I mean Hooked! I couldn't put it down! Hope you like it too!
PurplePrimula And you expect AY to know this how exactly? Give it a go anyway if you think it sounds interesting. You get used to that sort of thing. A favourite of mine has a male character named Berit. In translation, his name is changed to Berrit, but I haven't read the translation for nearly 20 years at this point. I got used to it, and never spare it a second thought anymore. To the author, it was a made up name, just like all the others.

Ilovebooks His name is Fiske cuz its great. Quit complaining and JUST. READ. THE. BOOK!! When someones last name is smith i don't judge them for it just cuz it was a working title?!?!? There is NOTHING wrong with the name!! The book is amazing! And the author went so deep into acknowledging its names and origin! And wut is ur problem!!! Just becuz Will smith has a last name that marks a job i just think hes lousy and terrible?!?!?! NO!!! U DONT JUST DO THAT!! THIS BOOK IS SOOOO GOOD AND UR MAKING IT SOUND LIKE SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE BOOK!?!?!?! NUH UH. Fiske is a great name and i dont see why u need to be like that over a NAME! >: (
Christina I agree with Cassandra on this one, and what others are trying to hint at without giving anything away to you. It's definitely a good story and the names of people, places, and events aren't chosen haphazardly by the author. Trust us and try it :) Then you can decide for yourself if you can tolerate it or not.
Emilia Yeah, it´s a word in Swedish too, but it´s still a real name though
