Yes, A Great and Terrible Beauty is very much historical fantasy.

It takes place in the Victorian Era and showes alot about the life back then; it's Historical Fantas.

Stephanie Why is the Diary of Anne Frank on here?? It is by no means fiction...

message 11: by Candace (new)

Candace Hinnergardt I have t admit that I was really surprised when I saw Revolution as far down as it was. I just read that book last week and I loved it!!

Awesome list! Stop me before I add all of these to my "want to read" shelf. :P

Is alternate history welcome on this list?

Leslie Janis wrote: "Stephanie wrote: "Why is the Diary of Anne Frank on here?? It is by no means fiction..."
My thoughts exactly! GREAT book, definitely historical, but not fiction."

There are several books on this list that are not historical fiction! Historical fiction is fiction set in a time 50+ years earlier than the time of the author's writing. Little Women and Pride & Prejudice don't fall into this category!!

Leslie Aubrey wrote: "Awesome list! Stop me before I add all of these to my "want to read" shelf. :P

Alternate history is generally science fiction not historical fiction.

message 16: by Candace (new)

Candace Hinnergardt Samantha wrote: "Can Anne of Green Gables be considered historical fiction if it was written in the time period it takes place in?"

I would think so. At least we know it's historically accurate.

message 17: by Rhaine (new)

Rhaine Hi. I recently started a historical fiction group called Young Adult Historical Fiction that discusses many of the books on this list. If you love Teen Historical fiction and discussing books, then I would really appreciate it if you joined.

message 18: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Samantha wrote: "Can Anne of Green Gables be considered historical fiction if it was written in the time period it takes place in?"

I think that's just fiction. Historical fiction is usually written about a different time period, not the one the writer is living in.

message 19: by Kristin (new)

Kristin My inner librarian is coming out. Jane Austen isn't historical fiction since it was contemporary at the time it was written. Some of these books seem more like fiction set in a different era. Historical fiction is typically fiction set in the past, which builds on historical events or persons.

Debbie is on Storygraph Removed The False Princess - not historical.

message 21: by Leslie (last edited May 26, 2013 02:00PM) (new)

Leslie The Diary of a Young Girl is NOT fiction!! I am removing it from the list, along with several fiction books that were contemporary at the time of writing (such as Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott, Lucy Montgomery).

Tara ♪ So, I agree that Anne Frank's Diary is NOT fiction, however, it has been observed/sorta proved that it was not your average diary; we revised it and tried to prepare it for publishing while in hiding. And even though it's not fiction, I am still really surprised to see it down so far on the list. Maybe not as people voted for it because it's nonfiction?

Either way, great list! I found a lot of my favorite books on this list, as well as books that I haven't yet read but want to read.

MomToKippy If this is for teens shouldn't it be somewhat clean - no sex? Memoirs of a Geisha?? Philippa Gregory???

message 33: by Mike (new)

Mike Number the Stars isn't teen by any stretch of imagination - it's meant for an audience younger than teenagers, and the protagonist is ten.

Mike Also, The Outsiders was written to take place in the present day. Just because it was written a long time ago doesn't make it historical fiction.

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) To Kill a Mockingbird (#6) is not historical fiction, to name one. Just because a book is 'old' doesn't make it per definition historical fiction (see also an earlier comment by Kristin).

And where are the 'teens as a main character', like the description says, in Gone with the Wind (#18), The Help (#21) and The Scarlet Pimpernel (#47), to name just a few?

Sorry to have to say this, but this list is a mess...

Agreed. Which number is it on currently? Never mind, I found and removed it. (It was on #469)

Seems to me that the description ("Historical fiction that features teens as the main characters") isn't read by many ... Or maybe it is ignored ... Not nice 😠
