Bettie hahaha

Last one, I'm all out of squirrels!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I like your squirrels.

In real life, they are vermin who should stay away from our bird feeders!

Have you got a catapult?

Carling Black Label

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads LOL!

I think we need an electrocution switch for the bird feeder.

BTW is Themis on holiday? she hasn't been around for a while.

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) I went what???

Hereby officially reporting back, in any event ...

message 14: by Bettie (new)

Bettie Hey! this is where we talk about you, not to you.

hahaha

Dear T.A Squirel Chops,I am pleased you are back in the only reality that counts: GoodReads Listopia!

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Leaf peeping..its what Vermonters call those pesty tourists who come up to look at the fall color. Sounds naughty doesn't it?

message 16: by Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) (last edited Jan 17, 2012 02:27AM) (new)

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) It does indeed!

Who'd want to go leaf peeping if you've got this in your own back yard, though?

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) That said, I actually did live in upstate NY for a year and got to see plenty of beautiful fall colors there as well -- both at home and on trips to Canada and New England. It IS beautiful indeed! :)

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Hi Bettie -- wanna form a band?

message 19: by Bettie (last edited Jan 17, 2012 05:04AM) (new)

Bettie Yeah!

I give you 'The Nutters' *wild applause*

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Woohoo!! :)

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Audience:

(My cats, attentively watching -- from behind the safety of a mosquito screen! -- squirrels playing in a huge fir tree right in front of my balcony and other goings-on outside the apartment where I used to live in Southern California.)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Were they making that frustrated cat clicking noise?

Beautiful! I guess you saw the scarlet maples in NY area?

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Alice: Yes, I did indeed! We actually had one right next to the house where I was living at the time. If I ever get around to uploading some of the images from that year into in internet-based album, I'll post a few photos ...

Susanna: My cats are never just "frustrated." They're either content (when human serf has done duty to lavishly feed, cuddle & pet them), or they are SUPREMELY UNHAPPY, and you can bet you'll be hearing chapter and verse about it until that condition is reversed.

Spoiled? Nooo ....

(Reminder by way of refigerator magnet. Others, right next to this one, read: "This household is run for the sole comfort and convenience of the cats." And: "Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.")

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Oh, I can relate, believe me! We have one very spoiled only cat.

Themis-Athena wrote: "Alice: Yes, I did indeed! We actually had one right next to the house where I was living at the time. If I ever get around to uploading some of the images from that year into in internet-based al..."

Lucky you! I have only traveled to see the maples in that area. Here we don't have as much red as our aspens normally turn yellow.

My husband cannot live without a cat. He has 3 cats: The Queen Mum, Sparky and Lindy. They used to live in the garage as I am allergic to cats but now they have managed to take up residence in the basement. Their excuse for this bad behavior is that they catch mice.

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) At least they have an excuse -- and from a feline perspective, it's a valid one indeed! (Though I bet you can very well do without finding the odd mouse corpse on your door step or in other unexpected places every so often ...)

My cats, alas, have no excuse whatsoever for their attitude (nor would it even occur to them that they'd need to proffer one). :) They were, I am ashamed to admit, simply raised to expect nothing less.

That said, though they were all rapt attention watching those squirrels way back when, they'd probably have gone for cover very quickly if it had occurred to any of the squirrels to make a jump for my balcony -- mosquito screen or not! :)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads My little spoiled darling's favorite prey is voles. Chipmunks she catches, brings in while alive-alive-o, and then loses all interest in them!

One spring we had six chipmunks living in our house.

message 29: by Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) (last edited Jan 20, 2012 10:51AM) (new)

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Oh dear. And they really do get into everything, don't they? I remember on a trip to Grand Canyon once, they were flitting in and out of our cabin all the time ... happily chewing away at the filling of our beds' mattresses from below!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads And then they die under the furniture.

Gah!

message 31: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 20, 2012 10:05PM) (new)

Susanna, a few years ago my little dog may be carried a live chipmunk in as it was hiding under the china cabinet and she was anxiously watching for it to come out. I had to lock her up in another room to let it go back out thru the pet door. I had hoped it would stay around but it departed the area. Probably a wise move on its part.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Just learned this:

The first thing is to recognize that a chipmunk is different from the only squirrel that is similar, Golden-mantled Ground-Squirrel (right). That colorful squirrel is widespread in wooded open country throughout mountainous western North America. Although the Golden-mantled Ground-Squirrel has black-and-white body stripes, as do chipmunks, it lacks any stripes on the face. It is not a chipmunk, but is in a genus (Spermophilus)with many other ground-squirrels.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads That's interesting, Alice. I think our "chipmunks" are chipmunks; we live in the southeast. And the little corpses have stripes on their faces (assuming she hasn't decapitated them).

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

Then they really are chipmunks. There were pictures there to help with identification but I was unable to transfer them here. We also have prairie dogs at this high altitude. A friend told me in her area of Texas the ranchers have killed them all. We have too pack rats which can be very pesty. One year they cut everything in my garden down to ground level.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

Also here is a lovely black squirrel that only eat the spruce cone seeds at the tops of the trees. It has tufted ears like a Lynx.

message 45: by Tesh (new)

Tesh Has anyone heard/know of a children's picture book about a girl and a squirrel(I'm sure it's a squirrel) and a treehouse/swing, and the squirrel falls and breaks its leg? The illustrations were drawn, coloured with perhaps pencil/watercolour.
I read this as a kid maybe early 00's and I only read it once but I can't find it again.
Any suggestions please?

I unfortunately don't know the book, but have you posted this question in "What's the Name of that Book?" https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

Tesh No, thanks, but I will now. I just thought that it being on the topic of squirrels, someone might know.

Absolutely, and someone may! :)
Just thought I'd point out a second avenue, where I think a lot of people actually do get their questions answered as well.
