What a way to start a new year of reading! (slight spoilers at the end of review)

I did really like this book, it was a fun and rollicking good time that had me smiling for a lot of it, but I do agree with some of the criticisms other reviewers have stated which is why it's not a 5 star for me.

There were a fair amount of veiled pop culture references, while they didn't jar me out of the book sometimes it wasn't needed and felt a little out of place. I loved Gideon's voice and her complete irrever

Winter 2020 (December);

A 3, because it would bother me to put it in the 2's.

Everyone who was everyone in my life kept saying last year that I should read this book. I wonder if that built it up too much in my head (or if I really owe Muir an apology because all I've been reading is Sanderson for basically the last month and a half's or longer 90% of my books, and trying to read a novice first-publication with that bulwark to compare itself to is nye on cruelty).

This book was true to it's sellin

I really enjoyed the story and the narration, but as I said, I think I missed a lot of details that might have been important. I caught the broad strokes, I get what’s happening, but apparently I missed a lot of the nuances, jokes and puns, the little scenes that make it great. I think I’ll come back to this book again on print. Especially since I want to continue with the series and I’d like to be sure I get the details before moving forward.

Very exciting ending, with a coda that makes me want to read the next book. Well, have read it. It took me a long time to get into this book, because I found the main characters rather unpleasant, and even after I learned to like them (their actions are sometimes better than their words) it still wasn't congenial to be with them. Gideon is the low intelligence/strong strength warrior type, but with unexpected depths of loyalty. Harrow is smart and powerful but unable to believe in other people, ...more

It took me this long to get around to it because I prefer audiobooks, but it took me no time at all to finish it. At the beginning it took a little bit to get a handle on the characters, but it got easier as it moved along. I only slightly followed the necromantic theories, but it wasn't to the point that I was confused and annoyed about it. Glad that Harrow is out and I can just pick that up and continue on. ...more
