Saint Valentine's DayIt's Cupid's day
It's time to go!
He reaches down
And takes his bow.
He looks around
And spots a boy
Down on the ground
A suitable target ...
He fits an arrow
And takes aim
Off flies the dart
Bullseye!
His aim was true
It strikes the heart
His victim gasps
He is devoted
To love.
And so it goes
Throughout the day
Cupid is busy
Come what may
Many victims on his list
And none of them
Were missed
Then finally he takes his rest
He's worked so hard
He's done his best ...

Thanks Suzanne, that's a good idea. I am always hopeful, but often depressed by the low probabilities I see of good outcomes. But today's sunshine is cheering.
Sometimes I think I would be better off completely desensitized. The world is full of horrors: war, deadly viruses, economic collapse ..... It would be nice to avoid all that stuff.
Glad you like it GB. The festival is known as the Lupercalia, which is confusing, as lupus means wolf, not goat.Of course, we now have more scientific methods of ensuring conception and reducing the pain of childbirth.
A poem for February, named after the Roman festival of purification and fertilityThe time of the festival has come.
The matrons throng the streets,
Eagerly awaiting the arrival
Of the young men.
Suddenly they appear,
Running rapidly.
They strike the matrons
With their goatskin thongs,
As prescribed
For the ancient ceremony.
Those matrons who were struck
Consider themselves blessed,
For they believe
That the touch of the thong
Induces conception,
And will alleviate the agony
Of the subsequent birth.
Good news for lovers of poetry and sheds : the UK Post Laureate, Simon Armitage, is presenting a BBC programme from his own personal shed.
