Hi LIz: I'm assuming that the same SRC rules for a partially read book applies here also. Wasn't there discussion this last quarter that only ONE book could be partially read before the start of the challenge and counted in the challenge?

If that's what they've decided on SRC, then I think that's what we should go with for this season.

Yes, there is a 100 page minimum for RwS tasks.

36119 Sam, did you approve 'Demon', 'Demon(s)' for Part B -- or was it only the one book that you gave a dispensation for? See Msgs 2 & 3.

Thanks!

36119 Coralie wrote: "What about a book where the main character goes on a quest with a ghost?"

Well my reading of the task is just that the ghost has to be a main character in the story -- so if the ghost and quest are main elements in the story then I think this is okay.

36119 Melissa W wrote: "Can I have my question that I asked for Monster Redux answered? I have waited almost a day for the answer. Surely I can get an answer now?"

Hi Melissa: No, "blood" isn't an approved word for this task.

Please understand that this is the busiest time of the quarter for Sam and me. One season's challenge is winding down and folks are anxious to see the most current scores on the Readerboard for that challenge. At the same time one seasonal challenge is revving up and there are lots of new folks that haven't participated before, so there are many questions to answer.

I think that all in all we've answered the numerous questions you've posed very promptly. We will get them answered as quickly as possible. If you feel like one has slipped past our notice, by all means repost your question. Just remember that a gentle reminder goes a lot further than a demand.

Today was my first day on a new job. I spent my break and lunch hour checking on this site and answering questions as quickly as I could. There are 90 days in this challenge, and 30 tasks to choose from. Surely if you didn't get this specific task question answered immediately it won't seriously impact your performance in this challenge.

Hi Katy, thanks! I think I'll pencil Kindred in for this task. Now you have piqued my curiousity though. It this isn't your favorite Butler title, what is? :-)

I thought when this was posted that I would be able to rack up the series style points since I read so many series. However, the most I have reached is 15 points. While I really like the tasks this season, they seem to be more narrow or have tighter criteria than those in the past. But I have still fit all the books I want to read into the challenge so they obviously aren't that narrow. I can't wait for tomorrow to start on these books.
...."

I'd say 15 Series style points is really good given the narrowness of the tasks posted to date. Maybe one of the 1st, 2nd or 3rd place finishers will throw us task that is a bit wider. :-)

36119 Allie wrote: "I'm not clear on the series style points -Series (5 points): Read a book to complete a task that is part of a series and receive 5 points. Read a book from that same series to complete another task..."

Hi Allie: This is a new one for all of us this challenge. Good questions!

Series style points increase by 5 points for every book in the series you can work into different Reading w/Style challenge tasks. The big thing to remember is that the books have to be read for DIFFERENT tasks.

I'll give you an example.

If you read Book 1 (or 2, or 3...) in a series for Task 10.1, you'd get 5 Series style points for that book.

If you then read Book 2 (or 3, or 4...) in the same series for Task 10.2, you'd get 10 Series style points for that book.

The catch is if you read Books 2 (or 3, or 4....) for Task 10.1 (same task that you read Book 1 for) then you'd get 0 Series style points for that book.

You can really rack up the Series points with this concept, but I don't think that the tasks posted so far this challenge will give us much wiggle room to read many books in a series for different tasks.

The Reading through Time tasks (15 point tasks) don't qualify for any Style points.

Sure, I hope you'll find that we're a friendly helpful bunch. :-)

I do want to stress to everyone, especially the new players --- please post your completed points frequently, especially at the beginning of the challenge. Smaller lists of completed books are easier for me to manage especially if I have any questions about the points you're claiming. So, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE --- post early and post often!

36119 As I was scanning my crammed bookshelves this afternoon trolling for books that could work for ths season, I found.... Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn.

I think that's what I'll read for this task. As I recall a few seasons back lots of folks were reading this for a SRC task and raving about it. Here's hoping it's as great as I vaguely recall the reviews portrayed it.

Hi Melissa: Let me know if you need any more help figuring out the points posting. It's not as simple as with the Seasonal Reading Challenge, but we all love our Style points! After a few posts it should become clearer.

The new wrinkle this season will be the Reading through Time tasks. They don't earn all the Style points, so they'll be a bit easier to figure out and post the points for.

Elizabeth, thanks for sharing your spreadsheet! I appreciate that everyone pitches in so quickly to help a fellow challenge participant!

Excerpt from Task requirements (emphasis added)
...B) Read a book with one of the following in the title: Devil, Witch, Vampire, Zombie, or Werewolf

Your book has 'Devil' in the title, so it is fine.

Hi Melissa: The author doesn't necessarily have to speak Spanish. Paulo Coelho is fine since he's from Brazil and that is in South America. :-)

Excerpted Task Requirements (emphasis added by me)
...read a book written by an author from Mexico, Central America, South America, or one of the Spanish-speaking countries in the Caribbean.

36119 Just as an FYI, I've recently added a new folder titled, "General Challenge Questions and Answers" to the "Reading with Style (Fall 2010)" topic. This can be used for general questions about the challenges, how Style points are earned, etc.

That way we can keep this Questions & Answers folder more closely focused on just RtT questions. It's not a big deal if we get some cross-pollination between the two folders. I wanted to try to help ensure that general questions don't languish in this folder.
Aug 30, 2010 12:28PM

36119 Yep, the Completed Tasks thread has now been updated. I've included a few samples of the formatting that I'd really like to have everyone use when they post points.

Remember this challenge doesn't start until Wednesday, September 1st.

All books posted for this challenge should be read between September 1st, and November 30th.
Aug 30, 2010 12:26PM

36119 Hi Melissa:

You've joined the group, so you're signed up for the Fall Challenge. :-) This group is really all about the challenges.

Just post the books you've read between September 1st, and November 30th in the Completed Tasks folder. See the first message in that folder for the preferred formatting of completed task messages.

36119 Post your general questions about the Reading w/Style challenge, Style point rules, or the Fall 2010 Challenge here.

36119 In Msg 67 Rachel Lee wrote: "Again, not really a question for RtT but on the style points for series. I know to get 10 points or more on this category, you have to use a book in the same series on another task. However, what if you use it for the same task, can you claim 5 points for each book? I am reading a couple of long series and most won't fit into a different task so I wasn't sure how this would work...."

Hi Rachel Lee: Only the first book in the series that was read for any single task will earn 5 Series style points.

For example if the Hunger Games series qualified for Task 10.1, and the reader claimed points for all three books using Task 10.1 --- only the first book in the series could earn Series points.

10.1 - The Hunger Games (Book 1) = 5 Series combo points
10.1 - Catching Fire (Book 2) = 0 Series points
10.1 - Mockingjay (Book 3) = 0 Series points

Let me know if you have any other questions about this new Style category. It took me awhile to get it straight in my head.

36119 Krista wrote: "I'm double checking to make sure my interpretation of the new 'Series' style category is correct.

Series Style point category explanation states:

"2. Series (5 points): Read a book to complete a task that is part of a series and receive 5 points. Read a book from that same series to complete another task and receive 10 points...and so on. " (I added the emphasis)

To me this means that you can't claim Series style points when books in a series are read for the same task. Multiple finishes of the same task with a series of books will only earn Series style points for the first book read for the task. Is that correct?..."

---------Update--------
Sam and I talked about this an the above interpetation of this Style category is correct. In order to claim Series Style points for multiple books in a series, those books have to be read for different tasks.
