Perfect formatting for the point tally. Thanks so much!

If I understand scoring this time Reading Through Time is totally separate from the rest of the RwS scoring. If not then it will work for a combo - eventually. please advise. Although since I'd like to do the constant traveler this won't be used. I'd just like to know. p.s. yes I'm nearly back.. and nearly done with my first completed meal in *cough* :D Let the reading commence!

Hi Kiri -- yes your understanding of RtT is correct. It's kind of a challenge within a challenge. Books read for the RwS tasks can't earn combo points for any RtT tasks.

Liz's answer in Msg 9 is correct:

(Excerpted from her message.)
"The only way you get to repeat the nationality is by claiming it for different types of points -- once for the task points, once for combo points."

36119 Liz wrote: "Julie wrote: "So can we do the same thing if we repeat 20.7 itself and reuse a country? In other words, can we do US 1982 and US 1976 for example? Or does this rule only apply for combo points?"

I believe you only get to repeat a country if it is used for different purposes. When claiming task 20.7, you can't use an American author twice. When claiming 20.7 as combo points, you can't use an American author twice. The only way you get to repeat the nationality is by claiming it for different types of points -- once for the task points, once for combo points.

Yep, Liz's explanation is correct. But perhaps that is just too complicated to keep straight. Should we just limit it to one author per country regardless of the type of points claimed?

re: claiming Combo Style points using this task.

...

Oh yeeesh, this is starting to get complicated, isn't it? Okay --- let's step through this using the verbiage from Task 20.7:

"You may repeat this task as many times as you like, but each time you repeat it you should read a book by an author from a different country and year than the one(s)...."

I guess given the logic I applied for 10.2, then it would seem that it would be okay to use an American author for Task 20.7, and use a second American author (whose book was published in a different year than the book you used for Task 20.7) ONCE when claiming Combo points for Task 20.7.

Here's an example of how this might work:

Task 20.7: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (US Author, Published 1962)

Task 20.8 (Non-Fiction Book): In Cold Blood (US Author, Published 1966)
+5 Combo Points Task 20.7 (US Author, publ 1966)
-------------------
After you claimed thee Combo points shown above, no other US authors coud be used for Combo points for Task 20.7.

Does that make sense?

I'm going to count on you guys to PLEASE provide complete explanations when claiming all points for these tasks as I can see this season is going to be a doozy!

Hi Melissa: Jennifer is correct. If you are using these books for RtT tasks then they won't get Lost in Translation (LiT) Style points.

However, if you're reading them for the RwS Tasks (10 and 20 point tasks) then they will qualify for LiT points.

Hi Liz: Minimum book length for Jumbo points is 500 pages. Books 500 pages or more earn 5 style points. From there the Jumbo style points go up based on the length of the book.

36119 I'm okay with using an author for task 10.2, and then using the same author ONCE for Combo points.

Technically it you are using the author twice, but this seems to be in keeping with the spirit of the task. Once for the Task, and once for Style points.

Hi Arow, your question makes sense to me. Since the task states that you can only use an author once when claiming points for the task, I'm going to say --- No --- you can't claim combo points for this task using the same author.

In the example you gave above, you could only claim combo points for Task 10.2 for one of the Harry Potter books you read.

Thanks,

Ooh, this one sounds good. I'll have to delve into it a little deeper. Thanks Elizabeth!
36119 I found one! Schindler's List by Thomas Keneally was originally published as 'Schindler's Ark' in Australia.

And as an added bonus this author was born in the fall. (Combo points for task 10.3!)
36119 Keep those suggestions coming! I'm glad for the help with this one as it has me a little stumped.

I did look as a copy of 'Little Bee' in the bookstore last night. It looked interesting, I may use that for this task. But I'm on the frugal side of the book buying scale, and I didn't want to shell out the $14.95 sales price. Sigh, I'll get in queue for it at the library. (And enjoy spending my $14.95 elsewhere...) :-)

36119 Here's a place to gather all those links that could be helpful for this quarter's challenge. Feel free to add whatever you think will benefit the group.

For example, this is a perfect spot for Kiri's Lexile Score spreadsheet, and the Author's Fall Birthday's Spreadsheet. It also might be helpful to put a sample scoring spreadsheet out here so new challenge particpants can review to see how the concepts of this challenge's scoring scheme can be captured in a spreadsheet.
