Hi Rachelccameron: Sam and I discussed the use of this book for this task and we both felt that the book didn't fit the intent of the task. This book is a true crime story that happens to be set on a farm. It's not about life on a farm.

I'm going to disallow the book for this task. But the good news is that it will work for either task 20.7, or 20.8.

If you want to take a look at Message 126 to see how Colleen scored it using Task 20.8 that might be helpful for you. Please add a new post with the task number and assoicated points when you've decided how you'd like to use this book.

Thanks! -Krista

I'm going to let Sam answer this question re: Luna being okay as Moon. Out of curiousity, what is the book that you're inquiring about? I'm assuming that when the book was translated 'Moon' didn't make it into the title?

2) This may be complicated to explain.
I'll try an example;
Task 20 .5 Freedom Season
The Confessions of Nat Turner(pub 1967)
Points
Task 20
combo 5 (20.7 re-unification USA)
Total points

Can you never use USA again to earn 20 points on the 20.7 task?
..."

In the example you gave above, you're right you won't be able to use USA again for 20.7 COMBO points.

If you haven't used USA when claiming TASK points for 20.7 yet, you could still use it there.

The basic rule of thumb is that you can use a specific country ONCE for Task, and ONCE for Combo points.

Hi Shannon: The folks commenting above are correct. If you have identified yourself as a Constant Traveler, the first task you complete (either 15.1, or 15.10 depending on which end of the eras you start with) will earn 15 points. All tasks after that earn 15 points + a 10 point style bonus.

You new Grand Total after claiming points for The Bean Trees for Task 15.1 = 50

If you've also read Homeland and Other Stories and Pigs in Heaven during this challenge, please let me know which task(s) you are using the books for.

Yes, this is fine. "City" in the title qualifies the book for this task.

Maugham. (I stuck Dumas in because stoker turned up in that one too.. it was v. early.)

So is Maugham your Literature Map author (Task 10.2) for this challenge? You can only use ONE author for the entire season so there is no need to stick Dumas in as an author for the Literature Map if Maugham is the author.

I just looked at Maugham's Literature Map, and Bram Stoker is not found on that map. "Dracula" won't qualify for Combo points with Task 10.2 if you're using Maugham as your Literature Map author.
--
and Dracula is associated with Halloween. Heavily so.
"A) Read a novel that has an adjective related to Halloween: Spooky, Creepy, Crawly, Scary etc."

Dracula is a Vampire. (dracula is synonymous for vampire at times too) .. *gestures with deviled eggs - which vampires don't generally like*
...."

Dracula may be associated with Halloween, but he doesn't quite fit for any of the specific qualifiers laid out in task 20.1.

Task 20.1
A) Dracula is not an adjective
B) The word; Devil, Witch, Vampire, Zombie, or Werewolf isn't in the title
C) A ghost doesn't play a prominent role in the story.

Question about points claimed for Task 20.1 above --- Which author's Literature Map have you selected to use this quarter?

Here's what Task 10.2 states, "10.2 – Literature Map
Go to Literature Map and type in an author whose work you read this summer (June, July, and August). Read a book by another author who comes up on the literature map. While you can repeat this task as many times as you like, you must continue to use the first literature map that you created. Additionally, you must select a different author to read each time you repeat this task. State the author you used to create your Literature Map when claiming points. "

Which author did you read last quarter who you are using to create this challenge's Literature Map? Then --- from that map, which author are you using to claim these Combo points?) Goodreads only shows me the editor of this anthology as the author of the book. Which other author's writings are contained in the book? Are you claiming the Literature Map for one of those authors?

For this book, I will allow the combo points for Task 20.3 (Anthology) but I'm going to disallow the combo points for Task 10.2 (Literature Map) until I know which author you've used to create your Literature Map, and which author you're reading from their map.

Hi Rebekah: This book won't work for Task 20.3.
The task states: "Read an anthology or collection of stories that includes (non-introductory) writing by more than one author."

This looks like it's a collection of stories and/or essays from only James Lee Burke. No points will be added to your score from this post. If there are contributions by more than 1 author, let me know and we can adjust your points.

Hi Rebekah: If you're going to claim this book for RtT then you would be qualified as a 'Time Leaper' since the book is from the middle of the time series.

I believe that part of Sam's intent with the RtT challenge was that as a 'Constant Traveler' you'd see the progression of the development of different literature style by reading the time periods in order.

If you held back reporting that you read the book until the previous eras in the series had also been that would be defeating one of the aims of being a 'Constant Traveler', and it isn't the way the game is structured.
