Shards of Earth (The Final Architecture, #1) by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Book: Shards of Earth by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Date Read: 07-May-2023
Pages: 402
Rating: 3 stars
Brief Review: I liked the complex worldbuilding, did not enjoy the confusion of it though. Loved the characters, loved the pacing and layers. Was very, very confused by the names being super complex and 'alien', so to speak, or very... (juvenile seems the right word here).

Mini Challenge:
Winners Towers:
Paplatine - Set in space, where the protagonists are constantly under threat of a 'dark force' that aims to destroy their worlds.

Spell out:
S (Title: Shards, Character: Solace)
A (AFN: Adrian)
T (ALN: Tchaikovsky)
I (Character: Idris)
O (Character: Ollie)
K (Character: Kris)

Here is a little look at our core towers as they currently stand:

Our Core Tower

10 x 100-199 : 7
20 x 200-299 : 8
30 x 300-399..."

I'm starting The Luminaries today - it's 834 pages. I came across it in a charity shop and got it for less than a fourth of the retail price and HAD to get it.

35559 Hey everyone!

After a nightmare of a flight where I could barely read without being interrupted by screaming toddlers or rude crew, I'm back home in London! Which means I can finally get back to my copies of Samantha Shannon. I'm going to wait to read them until the poll for the next BOMs are over, though - A Day of Fallen Night is an option for one of them.

So far, I'm about 25% through Shards of Earth. It's pretty fascinating so far, and kinda complex, and the world-building is amazing. Other than that, I just looked through the remaining Mod Towers books. I've shortlisted one, The Wind in the Willows which Ashley has read. Other than that, let's see.

35559 Michael wrote: "That makes a LOT more sense now. Is there a limit on how many teammates can earn pts for the team for each BOM?"

No, there's no limit on the amount of people in a team reading a BOM.

There is a limit on the DQs per BOM, which is limited to one person per team.

35559 I'm starting with Shards of Earth. I'll be on a plane tomorrow, which means plenty of time to read.

35559 You're going to need to tell us what you think about this book, Lisa. Erin Morgenstern's books always seem to inspire extremes - people either love them passionately or hate them with the fury of a thousand burning suns. I'm in the first - I loved how ethereal the books were.

35559 So the trick to using GR on your phone is to use it on your browser, because the app is terrible. Then when I need to embed a link, I usually select desktop mode on my browser menu and use it as the desktop app. Only issue i have with the browser is that the spellcheck gets weird.

I have an orange cover with The Priory of the Orange Tree, and whatever colour A Day of Fallen Night is - primarily blue, I think?. I'll have beige as well with The Luminaries.

35559 Exactly why I want to read it - it fits about 6 different challenges I have ongoing right now, and I really just want to watch the Keira Knightly movie. I have a thing for Joe Wright dramas, and I need to see it (once I'm done with the book, of course).

35559 To be fair, that's exactly why I estimated 7 books a month. I usually average about 10 a month, but then big books, so...

35559 Hey everyone! I'm Insiyah, one of the co-captains. I'm living in London, though I'm currently in Cairo, which is why it took me so long to introduce myself. 😅

This is my second TT, and I've got a lot of giant books lined up. The Roots of Chaos series by Samantha Shannon, Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, Bleak House by Charles Dickens, and The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton. I'm hoping to get through a my big books in May and June, before the chaos starts.

35559 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, #1) by Douglas Adams

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

Seconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.

Together this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by quotes from The Hitchhiker's Guide ("A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have") and a galaxy-full of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox--the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian, Zaphod's girlfriend (formally Tricia McMillan), whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student who is obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he bought over the years.

Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? Why do we spend so much time between wearing digital watches? For all the answers stick your thumb to the stars. And don't forget to bring a towel!

35559 McFayden was the perfect Darcy, though. He's tall and so, so painfully awkward all the time which is exactly how Darcy is described in the book.
