35559 Just finished Untamed for the U goal.

I've been a reading beast the last few days. I've been trying to help make up where we haven't been getting the book points from Leena.

In the spreadsheet where the goals are listed, can we modify those cells to include who is reading a book for those specific goals?

35559 Discussion: Nov. 28, 2015; Chapters 27-36

26. Wow, this was an exciting section! Kaz shows up after his encounter with Pekka Rollins covered in blood and lies to the group about finding him. Any new thoughts on what you think happened between Kaz and Pekka in that cell?

Kaz destroyed him.
27. When Matthias showed up outside of Nina's cell with Brum, he totally had me thinking that he had betrayed the team! Did he fool you too?
i was unsure. Nina had to make it out somehow and if Matthias wasn't playing along in order to rescue her, I was thinking maybe someone had beat them there and would have rescued her instead.
28. Brum reveals that his people have been experimenting on the Grisha for at least 15 years. So apparently the Grisha are worth keeping alive only if they use their abilities under the control and direction of the Fjerda. Now that Matthias knows the truth about what his people have been doing, do you think he'll still return home after he gets his pardon (if the team is successful)?
No way. There was truth behind the last words he spoke to
29. Wow, those Tidemakers were scary! We've now seen Squallers and Tidemakers fight our team. Will they face Inferni? What would an attack from jarda-parem-taking Inferni look like?
Apocalyptic! All the ice in the Ice Court would melt.
30. The team's plans keep getting thwarted, and now with Inej captured, do you think the whole team will make it out alive?
Yes, or that's the plot of book 2

35559 My book Trail of Broken Wings fits the books top shelf goal, if you haven't used it yet.
35559 Nov 27: Chapters 21-26, Pages 255-317

21. We have gotten a report on the audio version, but to those reading the book, how are you finding reading so many POVs? Do you feel the book is flowing well, or do you find it disjointed and hard to follow?

I haven't had much of a problem with multiple POV. The characters are all very distinct. I wouldn't say choppy, but it seems like the actual entering of th Court sort of popped up on us.

22. I am having an issue with the ages of the characters (I find them inevitably at least 18 in my head). It seems like the author has written a LOT of backstory and responsibility for a group of characters all under the age of 18. Is this a situation where the ages are dictated by the "YA" category, or do you think the author made the characters this young for a purpose?
As with real life, these characters had to grow up fast out of circumstance. Kaz was still a littl boy when he had no choice but to accept thie life of a criminal. Characters this young and this developed further emphasize the survival of the fittest rule prevalent in stories set in other worlds. YA shouldn't be dictated by character age, but by content and style of the writing. John Green us known for writing characters that seem too advanced for their age, but circumstance always compensates for lack of years. We are lucky that today's young adults get to be kids as long as they do. Creating a world where characters don't have these luxuries is what makes their stories so compelling.

23. The group has entered the prison. Do you think they will be successful in their mission? Do you think Bo Yul-Bayour is in the prison? Or do you think the whole job is a wild goose chase?
I'm not sure if Yul Bayur is in the prison, but I think the team will all make it out somehow. Hopefully a twist or turn in the plot will leave us all hanging on by our fingertips.

24. We find out two interesting tidbits about Jesper in his chapter. Did you find either one of these surprising? Do you think either will play a part in the story, or is it just to help us better understand his character?
Yes, they will come into play or they wouldn't have been included in his character. He and Merch Kid have been the most mysterious thus far, and the revelations about their lives haven't upset.

25. We finally find out the rest of Kaz's backstory and why he wears the gloves. At the end of the section, Kaz has completely gone off mission and has Pekka right where he wants him. Do you think he will kill him? And how do you think the rest of the group will react when they find out what he is really doing?
Something tells me he won't kill Pekka. Something will happen to pull him from this side mission. The team will not be happy but I'm hoping this distraction will end up being more beneficial than the original plan.
35559 November 25: Chapters 18-20, pages 202-254

16. We get a glimpse of Kaz feelings for Inez. Were you surprised? How do you think their story will evolve?

I'm sure it will play out like every other young adult novel. Not at all surprised.

17. Kaz shares a bit of his backstory with Inez, and considerably more with us. We are introduced to Jordie, the Hertzoons and an innocent, dependent Kaz. What were your thoughts reading about it?
Poor Kaz. Poor Jordie. The world is full of swindlers.

18. They finally landed on Fjerda. The heist plan is revealed. Matthias has a plan of his own and implies that Nina might have one too. Will they make it? At what cost? Is the gang going to break apart before the end?
They will achieve the rescue, but I don't know if they will end up back in Kerch with him. I think the group will separate, but hopefully not in the way we expect it to. Maybe Matthias one way and Nina the other, with vows to kill Yul-Bayur no matter the cost. Or their plan will some how be revealed to the rest of the group. I just hope it isn't predictable.

19. We learn more about Nina and Matthias backstory. Now, their characters are better shaped. Did it change your opinion for either of them? Can you see them escape their prejudices? How do you think their story will evolve?
[For those that have read the Grisha trilogy: The hatred between Grisha and the Fjerdans run deep. Grishas are burned to the stake like witches. The Grishas armies burn villages and destroy the land. Is the original Grisha trilogy explaining how all this started?]

I'm glad we learned more about Matthias's past. It was hard to relate or feel for the character originally portrayed. Their past has been catching up with him and now that he has the truth as to why Nina claimed he was a slaver, I'd like to see him forgive and grow. But his hatred and superstition runs deep. It's difficult to overcome such ingrained prejudice, on both Grisha and Fjurda sides. I really with I had read the Grisha series before this.

20. The company is attacked by a drug-empowered Grisha. The competition is getting tighter. Is their mission as clean as they were led to believe? What role Bo Yul-Bayur will play if he gets his freedom?
No not as clean and it will get dirtier. Maybe another party to compete with them along with the Shu. Maybe a corrupt group inside the Ice Court has already done something. I don't think Yul-Bayut will willingly go to Kerch to be put back into custody after being broken out.
