Last year was very productive and this year will be double that, so it is satisfying. But even more satisfying is I'm back to experimenting--Seance on a Summer's Night is the perfect example of that. And again, Patreon made that possible.

I'm back to writing for myself again--as well as delivering long-promised books like Slay Ride and The Ghost Had an Early Check-out.

Thank you! I'm planning a nice break for everyone with tons to eat and drink and nothing to do but relax and visit and swim and sun.

Yes. He's touched--it would be impossible not to be--but he's at a place where he shakes off any distracting emotion.

The problem for Jason is lack of sleep and stress have frayed all the restraints that would normally hold his rogue tendencies in check.

And Sam, the more he cares, the harder it is for him to be objective about Jason. Earlier in their relationship he could have been more dispassionate, I think.

I used two houses as the basis for mine, but mostly this one...

34844 1 - A day spent with the kidlings

2 - A days spent with the kidlings helping me prepare the yard and house for today's celebration

3 - So. Many. Lights. The backyard was ablaze last night. LOL. Which is actually okay because it is a very dark backyard, so all those twinkling, winking lights is gorgeous.

4 - Cool evenings. Usually July is just smotheringly hot, but this year it's breezy and cool at night.

5 - Getting. Things. Done. It feels so good to cross things off that gigantic list.

I will say one interesting--positive?--thing about this. A couple of years ago (after that ridiculous fall while hiking when I hurt my back and blah, blah, blah WHO CARES, JOSH???) I did feel like I had lost both my love of writing and my energy for it.

But then--and I do attribute a huge part of this to Patreon, not so much because of the money (though of course that is *hugely* helpful) but for the reminder of how many readers really are still absolutely engaged and loving the stories--I experienced, and am still experiencing, a kind of...well, renaissance.

I *love* the work again. I look forward to the work again. I'm energized, I have tons of ideas--more ideas than I have time to write.

It's exciting.

Even recognizing how much the genre and the readership has changed in the past five years, I feel confident, revived.

Now, this could be the last blast before decline sets in. :-D :-D :-D Who knows? But right now, I'm in a very good place creatively and personally.

What I loved about writing this one is the missing art--while the only thing that really matters to Jason--is actually the MacGuffin.

RIGHT???

So fascinating. But of course it was about two decades ago, so presumably times would have changed some.

What I did find really interesting--and this is something that will never change about people--is the self-justification for trying to hang onto the treasure.

And how the whole town really did sympathize with the family against the feds and against the German people.

I tried to make the lines of demarcation a little clearer in my story by having it be the Dutch instead of the Germans trying to get their art back. But really, I don't think it would matter in real life.
