I don't know what the heck it is, but I'm so TIRED at night. I'm actually enjoying the book, now that I've caught the rhythm of Hare's humor, but it's like the SO is slipping me sleeping tablets. I'm yawning by 8:30. :-D

34844 I literally can't seem to read for more than four minutes before I'm asleep.

I had mixed feelings about Robert's death.

Obviously, he was destined to die, and we loathe him pretty thoroughly by the time he keels over. However, in many of the novels of the period, we would see Robert more typically blamed for the murder and then salvaged through love and good detective work.

Is it his facism that makes him unredeemable in Hare's eyes? I'm very interested in Hare's choices.

Also, I'm wondering--hoping--that we gain better understanding of how and what changed Robert from the genial, idealistic young man that his father and Camilla loved to this pretty awful specimen he's become.

Not that there's always a clear trajectory. Certainly not in real life, though fiction tends to try.

Yes. Also, it's alarming how many people seem to have little practical experience coupled with a lack of imagination.

I found that interface a little confusing. I clicked on the AL Lester book but it led to the audio not the ebook, and then I couldn't seem to navigate to Lester's AD store.

34844 1 - The Office Elf. She goes back to school this coming year, so I don't know how much longer we'll have our work days together, These last couple of years have been a huge treat. She's so creative and supportive and funny. Plus, getting to spend so much time with one of the kidlings has just been terrific.

2 - 95% of my present wrapping is complete!
I think there was a time when I actually loved wrapping presents. I'd put some Christmassy movie on and just wrap, wrap, wrap. Those must have been the days when I didn't have deadlines dangling overhead.

3 - The SO was promoted to manager at work!
I'm so happy for him. And I think he's very happy too, though feeling a bit overwhelmed. With good cause because that place is...well, let's just a good manager has long been needed, lo these last six months.

4 - Spenser and Marlowe. My constant companions. I love my little hounds with all my heart.

5 - Goldbelly
I've tried to set it up that we get something delicious or at least interesting delivered every Friday during December. It's been very festive.

I'm figuring half an ounce to begin with and see how that goes. It's definitely a distinct and different flavor. I'm also thinking we maybe soften it with a whip cream vodka versus plain vodka.

However we did not experiment yesterday as we were so busy Doing All The Things. We did end the day with a couple of Bailey's Ved Velvet (which are so crazy yummy--but I'm not sure if the Red Velvet was limited edition).

(The Office Elf is now 24. I put that in there lest I seem like a truly depraved auntie. :-D She's a kid, but she's not a kid, if you know what I mean.)

I always fill the shaker with ice--and with anything in the martini family I feel like it's especially necessary if you want it to be properly cold (because you won't have ice in the glass).

COME TO THE DARK SIDE, DARLING! :-D

Yes, there are lots of versions, but this one sounds the most delicious to me (I'll soon find out). If you're not using Goldschläger, you can buy edible glitter/dust that would take care of the sparkles. ;-D

34844 I started reading again last night, and I have to admit, I'm enjoying the book more than I was. The not completely tongue-in-cheek social commentary was more amusing, but also I think there's a little bit of poignancy in Hare's observation of dying tradition. Also, the characterizations are more nuanced than I originally thought.

34844 1 - Three days of cold, wet--we've got rain!!!!--Christmassy weather

2 - My Christmas/holiday shopping is DONE

3 - Being in such a better, more positive, creative, festive mood than this time last year

4 - The ghostly glimmer of garden lights. There's not enough sunlight for them, so there's just a distant, mysterious glow in some of the bushes. :-D

5 - Buying the ingredients to make a Stardust martini (per The Dickens with Love). I'm going to rope the Office Elf into helping me concoct this thing today.
