24794 Even the etiquette in the army is complicated and easy to become confused by.

24794 The Spoon River Anthology sounds very interesting. That is new to me and so is O Pioneers!
I really need to give To Kill a Mockingbird another chance!

24794 If anyone is a Jane Austen fan, The Jane Austen Handbook A Sensible Yet Elegant Guide to Her World by Margaret C. Sullivan is up for a Firstread giveaway. This is not quite the same book, but it is by the same author. That would be really cool if someone from our group won this!

24794 I finally finished the first two parts and I'm confused about the purse, as well. Why did he not turn him in, since it was apparent that most people did not like Telyanin? I don't buy the excuse that the regiment would have been harmed, since later on Audrey witnessed a soldier being flogged for stealing. Hmmmmm.....
I felt so sorry for Tushin. He saves the battle and then gets a browbeating because he left 2 cannons behind. It was one of the few times that I was proud of Prince Audrey.

24794 Maybe, we can put this on the to read shelf for later in the year? Might be fun to revisit good old Wilkie!

24794 I just wanted to thank everyone for such a great discussion of this book. It was fun and enjoyable. It seems to be a book that brings up many topics and some that are applicable today and , probably, into the future. Thanks everyone!

24794 I agree with the manners and etiquette. I feel sorry for Pierre, doesn't know how to come into a drawing room and still less how to get out of one. Reminds me of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, flinging snails around!

24794 I was trying to remember if I read Twain in school and I don't think that I did. My parents had a young adult version that I read, but I was Twain lacking in school. That is a shame!

24794 Haha, that sounds like a book destined to be a classic! Probably the character Marion would give ladies ideas and airs about the world around them!

24794 I'm beginning to think that the inheritance of Count Bezuhov will have major consequences for all involved.
I can't decide who seems more likable, Anna Mihalovna or Prince Vassily. They seem to flow in different directions.

24794 I must say that the story about the bear and the police officer made me laugh. What a wild bunch of "men". Sounds like a scene from Animal House!
