I just read the part about the Scarlet Pimpernel and the snuff box. I laughed my head off! Got to love a resourceful hero!

Welcome to the group Marna! Wow, 6 cats! My daughters would be in heaven! High school English-huh, I bet you can give us lots of ideas and suggestions for books. Central Valley-does that mean that you are a Valley Girl? HA!

What did people think about the scene where Marguerite almost begs her husband for help? (That wasn't too spoileris..."I just read that last night and it was such a good scene. I'm still not quite sure how I feel about Marguerite. I felt sorry for both of them-amazing what pride does to people!

Hello and welcome to Mariana! Hope that you enjoy the group!

I don't find it to odd, since as many characters in the book have stated that they agreed with the Republic's idea, but the horrific, bloodthirsty massacre that the entire thing became was too much for most people. It is hard to see woman and children murdered no matter what the cause. I have always found it interesting how different the French and American revolutions were. It is amazing how the means to achieve that independence was achieved in both.

Hello and welcome to the group Kristy! Hope that you get lots of classics done!

I have no idea, which is better. Sorry!

It is nice to meet you Miranda! I'm starting The Scarlet Pimpernel late as well, but have enjoyed it so far! It was nice of you to join our group and I hope that you and your kids enjoy the books!

Ok, since I'm so behind reading this one, please feel free to divulge the mystery before I'm done! I will not be upset, since most of you know that I read the ending first anyway!LOL! I found this on wikipedia so take that with a grain of salt
The Scarlet Pimpernel is a classic play and adventure novel by Baroness Emmuska Orczy, set during the Reign of Terror following the start of the French Revolution. The story is a precursor to the "disguised superhero" tales such as Zorro and Batman.
The play was produced and adapted by Julia Neilson and Fred Terry. It first opened on 15 October 1903 at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal; it was not a success. Terry, however, had confidence in the play and, with a rewritten last act, took it to London where it opened at the New Theatre on 5 January 1905. The premiere of the London production was enthusiastically received by the audience, but critics considered the play 'old-fashioned.' In spite of negative reviews, the play became a popular success, running 122 performances and enjoying numerous revivals. The Scarlet Pimpernel became a favourite of London audiences, playing more than 2,000 performances and becoming one of the most popular shows staged in England to that date.
I had no idea that it was a play as well! Who would you cast as some of the lead roles? Trite, I know, but it is fun to see peoples ideas for this!

Wow, 100 books in 2011? That is amazing! It only seemed fair to keep it a multiple month book-1200 pages is quite daunting even with multiple months!

Hello and welcome to the group Debbie and Lesley! I hope that you enjoy it!

My students and own kids really enjoyed that...also the chapter with the refrigerator repairman being asked to put a handle on the inside of ..."I funny thought it was when the fridge guy would not do it. Talk about customer service..he just said "No".
I must say that Mrs. Popper was rather "cool" about everything that happened in the whole household. I'm not quite sure that having my hubby leave for 2 years to the Arctic would leave me feeling so happy. What are they going to do for money? They were hurting already, but now what? Of course, the book was finished by the author's wife, maybe, she was role playing for herself?
Andrea wrote: "yes-Linda Hamilton! Wasn't that show a trip? I loved it!"I don't remember much about it, maybe it is time to look it up on Netflix! I love the bookmarks of your kids, do you show everyone all their home movies also? Whip out the pictures for their prom dates? HAHa! I love it! My 10 yr old would die of embaressment!

Darn, I was going to say that an ereader is the answer to all my bad book habits, but after reading some of your other posts, I'm not so sure now! HA!

LOL! Somehow I think that there is no hope for most of us! Once an end reader always an end reader!
Andrea wrote: "I use bookmarks and pictures-whatever is handy. I do like coming across a bookmark that I have had for a long time, (i.e. one I am using now is from the 80's TV show Beauty and the Beast! Hysteri..."Was that the show with Linda Hamilton as Beauty? Ha, haven't thought about that one for ages.

Hello and welcome to the group, Elizabeth and Niquae. Thanks for joining and I hope that you enjoy it!

niquae wrote: "I used to use bookmarks but for years now I either remember where I last read or I lay the book pages face down (if it's for a short time)."Wow, you must have a great memory! Do you read more than one book at a time?
