24794 Welcome Debbie! I also did not enjoy most of the classics that I read in high school, but have now really come to enjoy, and be challenged by them! I hope that you enjoy the group and welcome!!!

24794 I know that this is not a classic and further more most people in the group have probably already read this one, but Kerri and I wanted to do a buddy read together with this book. If anyone else would like to join it that would be great! Don't have a time frame, but my book has to be back to the library in 3 weeks! So no hurry on this one.

24794 I agree with you Amy, while in the beginning, I did not like Mr. R, by the end of the story I could see their love and was actually happy for her. Of course, I did not like St John, so that was an easy choice. My goodness, Jane had some interesting male cousins!
Being written in the 1840's, I was surprised at how independent Jane was and was happy that she was able to have a choice later in life!

24794 From what I can figure out, Charlotte was 31 when this was published. Is that correct? I figured she was younger when she wrote it.

Yeah, it is a buddy read in the James Mason group and I have appreciated the insight into the Latin and the church history. Lots of extra stuff to know in his books! I'm enjoying it though, can't wait to see the movie!

24794 Just met Mr. Rochester and must say I'm not impressed so far. To blame Jane for bewitching his horse? Huh?

24794 Does anyone else start more than one book at a time? I really have a problem with this. I have 4 books going right now, Jane Eyre, The Name of the Rose, The Handmaid's Tale, and Two for the Dough. I need 3 extra sets of eyes and, at least, one extra brain. Plus went to the library yesterday and picked up The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Need some serious help! Sorry friends for all the updates!:)

24794 I have to admit that I was slacking this month and just now really started to read this book. Now I'm hooked! Starting with the red room incident, what do you think? Did she experience a specter of her uncle or was she a victim of an over-active imagination? Can't wait to see if this use of the supernatural comes back throughout the book.
How about that wonderful orphanage/girl's school? I have never smelled burnt porridge, but I could almost give it a quality after reading that passage! Yuck!
