189072 I loved that "I'm gad we don't have to kill the stars" line too!

There were parts of this story I really enjoyed and parts I found boring. It was an interesting mediation on age, nature and human existence.

189072 I read this back in Highschool. It was interesting to read it again. I'm not a huge fan of Hemmingway because of his obsession with manliness, but this story had lots of beautifully descriptive bits, the character of the Old Man was very well drawn and sympathetic, and the love between him and his grandson was very touching (someone else mentioned really feeling it when the Boy notices the Old Man's hands). I liked how much love and respect the Old Man had for the sea and the fish. I could understand why he was so driven to prove himself still capable. It broke my heart that the sharks got the fish. I wish he'd been able to get it home intact.
