189072 updated post 46 and added some reviews. I apologize, my brain can't do math right now, so I haven't figured out my total for November.

I hope everyone is well!

189072 I agree with Melissa and Cheryl. I had to force myself to finish this book. While he does make some insightful and intelligent observations, it’s a very Eurocentric book that makes a lot of gross oversimplifications, makes mistakes, uses some inappropriate analogies regarding the American slave trade and Indigenous peoples response to European colonialists and, like Cheryl said is totally wrong about sci-fi failing to address androids, cyborgs and the evolutionary future of humanity. That’s what a large portion of sci-fi is about, not just space ships and ray guns.

189072 I really enjoyed revisiting Coraline! I read it close to when it came out and then listened to the audiobook with my son; Neil Gaiman is such a great narrator! It's definitely a creepy book. I love how plucky Coraline is, and, like everyone else, I love the cat!

Her dad reminds me a bit of my own dad, who was always horrifiying me and my sister by cooking fancy recipes, tho we came to appreciate that as we got older. I love how well Gaiman captures a young girl's attitude: fancy recipes with things like tarragon are gross and limeade that tastes green is amazing.

I think the movie is a good adaptation, they captured the flavor of the book and the characters even with inevitable changes.

189072 updated message #46. glad we have until tomorrow to finish updating, because I still have some reads to add. Happy Halloween everyone!

would posting reviews late still give us points in the long run? I'm slow with the reviews but trying to catch up. If I post a bunch of October reviews in November, it wouldn't count for the October Round Robin, but would it still help our overall points?

189072 Coraline,
Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey (2007)
Sense and Sensibility (the 1995 Emma Thompson version is my favorite but the more recent mini series is good too),
Dracula with Bela Lugosi,
The Witcher Netflix series,
Babe (the sheep pig)
The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and Prince Caspian,
The Color Purple,
A Wrinkle In Time,
There are tons of adaptations of Emma, and they all have their good points.
Likewise, there’s tons of adaptations of Little Woman and most of them are good

189072 Earth team here 👋

189072 Thanks for starting this discussion Joanna! I’ve really enjoyed participating in this challenge in the past but I’m uncomfortable about keeping a Hogwarts theme. It might be hard to find another fictional world so many people resonate with tho. I had a friend on Instagram suggest identifying as a type of bender a la The Last Airbender, so we could group people in different elements. There are other popular wizarding school books that could be the basis of a challenge as well.

I have no problem counting children’s books and graphic novels and I thought last year we’d remedied the issues people had by giving books points based on length. Children’s books and graphic novels are still books and should count, just give them less points.

Audiobooks definitely count as books. I get really angry when people try to claim they don’t. I have a brain injury and have more difficulty reading books with my eyes. Reading with my ears is easier. This is the case for other people with neurological issues and visual issues, as well as for people who are auditory learners. Audiobooks are books!
