I second Mansfield Park, Flowers for Algernon and The Master and Margarita

There’s a good graphic novel adaptation of the first two books together, if you’re finding The Color of Magic hard to get thru. The Death books are some of my favorites. I love the Tiffany Aching books too, tho not everybody does. It’s a great series to explore! I’m currently re-reading the first few so I can read the later books I haven’t got to yet without being totally confused.

I also second The Sun Also Rises and The Martian

Jet setter, since I want to read authors from various places without having to figure out a road route. I'm focusing on the author option, though some books may have to be books about the area, since I'm constrained by my library's options.

I added my final December books to post 34. I hope everyone is having a good New Years! (for those who celebrate New Years now).

I first read this in middle school and we definitely talked about the references to communism and totalitarianism, but more generally, we didn’t get into the pigs’ relationship with specific historical people. I think that middle school is a good age to start talking about issues like this.
My son read it in high school and got into more specifics about the Bolsheviks and Trotskyism.
It’s interesting reading it as an adult with more of an understanding of the historical context as well as a recognition of how frighteningly relevant it still is.
Boxer’s death broke my heart the first time I read it and was just as tragic this time.

Added a bunch of books to post 34. I apologize for being slow to add my December reading, life has been busy! I hope everyone is having Happy Holidays!

added three books to post 34

This has been on my TBR forever, I’m looking forward to reading and discussing it! Technically, I read it when it came out, but I remember almost nothing. My son was fairly young at the time, so I couldn’t give it my full attention and have always wanted to go back and read it properly. I liked the movie that came out a while ago, tho of course it had its differences from the book. I haven’t seen the series yet, I’m sorry it sounds like it’s been disappointing.

I second Howl’s Moving Castle, The Thirteenth Tale and The Princess Bride

I second The Master and Margarita, Astray, The Subtle Knife and The Things They Carried
