185 Congratulations Jennifer and yay, Melanti for the fast find! I'll go ahead and shelve this title and move the thread to solved for you. :)
185 Or Judith Tarr? Perhaps her Avaryan Chronicles?
185 You're welcome. I'm quite happy to help. :)
185 oh, and you may have to get your hands on a copy of the book to find that particular story...I couldn't find a list of stories in it, although I didn't do an *completely* exhaustive search.
185 ::dances around happily:: YAY!! Congrats on being reunited with your lost book. :)

I'll go ahead and move this to solved and shelve it for you.
185 hahahaha! That is too funny.

Anyway, I MIGHT have found it:
Travel Writing: Major Writers Travel The World??
185 Oh, it's no trouble at all. Seriously, I love the "thrill of the hunt" lol. And I'm a librarian, so this is technically work-related, and I'm at work today anyway, so.... :)

I did find this http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid... - where someone references your book in the forum (post on bottom of page 1) so the book definitely exists...somewhere out there! Let us know if you hear anything from your former classmates, and I'll keep poking around.
185 Well, this is turning out to be more difficult than I had hoped. Here's one possibility: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Collins-Reade...

(there is not a GR record for this book but I'll add one momentarily) Unfortunately I can't find a list of the stories in it, but it was a UK pub and seems to be a school textbook kind of thing. So, maybe the cover looks familiar?

Edit: Miles Ahead: a Cascades Collection of Travel Writing for the GR link.
185 Just noticed your earlier post...in which country were you living when you read the book? It may give us a clue as to where the book was published.
185 Komal, when were you in 6th grade?
185 Oh, duh. I see you said nonfiction in your post. Sorry!
185 Komal, I don't know this one either, but I'll be working at the library today so I'll poke around and see what I can find. I take it these were all non-fiction essays and not (fictional) short stories?
185 You're welcome! He didn't write very much scifi. There's one, maybe two others besides this one and the rest are his usual supernatural/horror fare.
185 Well, it definitely sounds to me like y'all are looking for the same book. I think the OP may have mentioned Foreign Affairs as a possible title, too. I wish I could remember who/where they were so I could see if they ever found it!
185 I've tried poking around a bit and haven't turned up anything so far. But hang in there and keep bumping this thread every few weeks so more people see it. Eventually someone who knows the title will come along!
185 I know I've come across someone else, somewhere on the internet, who was also looking for this same book. I tried scouting about for it at the time but came up empty. Here's what I recall from the other query (maybe it will jog something in Kelly's memory or someone else's): The boy was possibly a college dropout who idolized Jack Kerouac, the girl was daughter of an Asian diplomat, there was something about her changing her dress in the back of a taxi? I guess as part of a disguise/escape? They traveled across the country, were chased and eventually caught by the diplomat's people. The OP thought the title was something like "Diplomatic Immunity" but I've searched that title in all the usual places and not found anything that matches the plot.
185 oooh, keep us posted! Since you thought the cover looked familiar I'm hopeful this is it...
185 Well, I'm stymied. Our ILL dept said the book is owned by the MBLN (Metro Boston Library Network), but when I search the MBLN catalog directly, the title does not come up. Argh!
