185 Cool! Keep us posted. I hope that's it, but if not I'll keep looking (there were a lot of books with similar plots published around that time) or someone else may come along and remember it straight off.

185 Hm. There's a few it could be. Maybe The Ultimate Game? or User Unfriendly?
185 The first one may be The Strange Power - first in the Dark Visions trilogy.
185 You're welcome! Happy to help.
185 You're welcome! Happy to help. But, (Laura or mods) this is a YA book, so it should be shelved under Children's/YA solved, not "other."
185 or, The Autobiography of Meatball Finkelstein

who knew there were so many books about kids whose parents own health food stores? :)
185 Two possibilities:

Can't Catch Me, I'm the Gingerbread Man by Jamie Gilson

No Bean Sprouts, Please! by Constance Hiser
185 Sounds like Stolen Voices
185 Possibly Just Like That. Two kids, guilt after a fatal accident....I can't remember if it was a snowmobile accident, but I do remember snow, ice, a frozen lake, maybe?
185 Whoa! Super-speedy solve, Andy. Here's a link: Lion's Blood
185 Maybe Lester And Clyde? Do you remember there being a environmental/anti-pollution theme?
185 Travels Of Freddie & Frannie Frog sounds like it might fit from the description, although it looks like it might have color illustrations (edit: and they build the boat, don't find it) so I don't know.

"Reading a biography of Christopher Columbus inspires Frannie and Freddie, frog sister and brother, to build a boat to explore a big pond."
185 How long ago did you read it, and do you think it was new at the time?
185 Something More Wonderful: A True Story?

"The true story of two women whose busy lives are interrupted when one of them is diagnosed with breast cancer. As Emma, a single mother, becomes increasingly ill, both women embark on a journey of courage and compassion. Explores themes of the fragility of life and the power of friendships."
185 Sounds like The Transall Saga by Gary Paulsen.
185 Sounds a little bit like Impossible by Nancy Werlin.
185 You're welcome! I'm glad that was the one. Now that I'm on a computer, here's the link: Locked Inside
185 Maybe Locked Inside by Nancy Werlin? I don't remember a guy being kidnapped with her, but the rest fits.
