Dang, none of those were the one? I was really excited when I found the bit about the vinegar-soaked sea sponge in the Erica Jong book - thought for sure that was it. Bummer. I'll keep an eye out for any other possibilities.

Maybe Cat, Herself? I don't remember many details, but it's a girl in a family of "Tinkers" (ie Scottish gypsy-like travellers)

Maybe Spider: A Novel by William Taylor? He's a teen piano prodigy, there's a competition involved, and sounds like there's some kind of drama with his mother:
