185 Good to know! Thanks, Cheryl.
185 You're welcome! Was that you who found that Sleepwalking book by Meg Wolitzer? I was a big fan of her mother's books when I was a kid (Hilma Wolitzer) and am so surprised I never came across Sleepwalking back in the day.

I'll move this to solved and shelve it for you :)

185 This makes me think of Eleanor & Park - but obviously it's not an exact match to what you described.
185 Are you sure? Can we consider this case closed? :)
185 You're welcome! Yes, a sad story all around. :(

I'll move this to solved for you and shelve the title.
185 Anything but Normal by Melody Carlson?
185 Maybe The Family by Mario Puzo? It's about the Borgias, and opens with a Papal election, IIRC.
185 Cardinal Galsworthy, maybe?

oh, wait...you said the pope is not the main storyline? Hm. Maybe not, then.
185 You're welcome! I've moved this to "solved" and shelved the title for you. :)

185 Check your local public library! If they don't have it, they may offer inter-library loans, where they can borrow the book from libraries in other states. It's often a free service. The book isn't that old and shouldn't be too hard to find that way. I know my library still has its copy!

185 ok - let us know once you've confirmed that it's the right one and we can shelve it. Fingers crossed! :)
185 Congrats on figuring it out, Vlad! I'll move this to solved and shelve the book for you. :)
185 Maybe Glint
185 I think it might be A Kiss Through Glass. It was published in Sweden in 1982 as Kampen för mitt barn : [en mors gripande berättelse om sin dödsdömde son]

The mother is Shirley, the son is Anthony and he had Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome.

There's an interesting site here, with a TV interview the author did in 1977: http://savingshirleynolan.blogspot.co...

edit: Sadly, the author committed suicide in 2002. http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2002/0...
185 Cool! Keep us posted. My fingers are crossed that it's the right one. :)
185 Congrats on figuring it out, Tim! I'll move this to solved and shelve it for you. :)
