174195 Laurel, I’m sorry to hear about your mom. But I’m glad she’s on the mend.

174195 No pressure, I just sometimes try to save my shorter books for the readathon, so wanted to prioritize appropriately for the end of my challenge

174195 Are we having a Spring Read-a-Thon? Or just the Spring challenge?
Mar 29, 2023 07:13PM

174195 Thank you all, I put all three on my list!

The King, Kaiser, Tsar is right up my alley, but I’m making our centuries multi-week prompts Royal themed and I already read Spare which has parts set in the 20th century.

But I’ll probably read it later in the year and choose a Victoria one!

174195 I’ve been in the mood for a book about real life royals, biography or historical fiction.

There are just so many, does anyone have any strong recommendations? I’ve loved Robert K Maddie’s books on the Russian tsars/tsarinas. I did a historical fiction Nefertiti which was ok.

I know there are a lot of options but I was thinking something up to the era of Queen Victoria.

174195 Sheena I came here to say the same thing. Why does time move so fast!

174195 Would “pool” be considered a body of water? I feel like it’s right on the edge, but maybe I’m thinking too deeply on this

174195 Hey Ana, I liked it and will definitely read the next ones, but didn’t love it. I really like Jude, but didn’t like many of the other characters.

I just started Cinder last week and have now binged that, the novellas before book 1 and 2 and about to finish book 2 tonight. Definitely loving this series more than I thought
174195 The Midwest, as defined by the federal government, comprises the states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Found this from Britanica: https://www.britannica.com/place/Midwest

But I think some could argue that Oklahoma, Arkansas and West Virginia could count.

174195 I finished How to Sell a Haunted House and it was amazing. It was definitely dark and scary at points, but I loved it. That said, I'm glad I kiss all my daughter's stuffies so they will always love me lol

Also, got through Adventures of a Vegan Vamp and I love the idea and plot. But the writing was a bit too clunky for me and I didn't feel like I got to actually know the main character or any of the characters. It was all very surface.

Next I'm reading The Cruel Prince

174195 oh soooo pretty! Maybe don't open it and rent a copy from the library lol

Agreed, I didn't think either of the previous books were scary. Vampires to me = fun and kitschy. Old school horror movie serial killers that walk while victims run = improbable and kinda funny. Dolls and puppets are just freaking creepy.

That said the writing is good, I like the overall story and it is entertaining. I just find myself speed reading through a couple pages here and there.

174195 I usually feel all sorts of emotions when reading, but fear has never been one of them, even with horror books. And I usually call Grady Hendrix books funny "horror".

How to Sell a Haunted House is really freaking me out haha. I'm torn between just getting through it so it's over, or dragging it out until I can mentally handle the next chapters.

That said it's a good story and his writing is great, just terrifying.

174195 Also how did you like Convenience Store Woman

174195 Finished The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches and LOVED LOVED LOVED it. Highly recommend, especially if you enjoyed The House in the Cerulean Sea. I actually liked this one better, and that's a high compliment.

Today I started How to Sell a Haunted House and I'm excited, but also already creeped out by the dolls and I'm only 3 chapters in.

I'm also rereading The Ides of April, but since I already read it this year for ATY, I figure the second time I'll put it with PopSugar. Not sure if I'll finish PopSugar this year, but we'll see.
174195 Yeah, I think I just have to use it for another prompt. If only there was one about creepy dolls.

174195 Bea, I’m so sorry to hear about your dog. I went through that last year with my cat. Hard to imagine now, but every day gets a little easier and they still live in our memories and through our stories.

174195 I had to stop Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead because the translation was just too choppy for me. Which is sad, because I was excited about it.

Instead I'm reading The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches which is great. If you liked The House in the Cerulean Sea you'll love this book.

Each season is it's own book, so once you finish Duke and I you can watch Season 1 of the show. Same with book 2 and Season 2. Season 3 of the show will skip to Book 4, because there is a spoiler that has already come out in the previous seasons and I think they just want to get that plotline out of the way. But each book is basically stand alone with scant appearances here and there.
