This book was great! Puzo was a great story teller and I enjoyed every minute of it - 5 stars!

Matthew's Godfather Review

WHO IS READY FOR A BIG BOOK!?!?!

From Wikipedia - I did not catch this:
Lorne Guyland: His name is a play on the way the location Long Island (where the character lives) is pronounced in certain New York-area accents.

I just got notice that my copy is on hold at the library!

This is a tough one to decide on - one of my favorites now, but some people might hate me if I recommend it . . . but then, it's so good, if I don't recommend it and they find out what they are missing - they might hate me even more!
(This previous statement is about as confusing and convoluted as the book - but I am not ashamed!)

I finished - and this was great - probably not for everyone, but I enjoyed it quite a bit!

This is the winner of the October-December 2015 BIG Read Poll

This is the winner of the October 2015 Short Read Poll (to accompany our BIG read)

It has been a long, long time since I saw the movie - and maybe they touch on this in the movie and I just cannot remember - but this is the last book in which I expected to read a detailed description of
(view spoiler)[vaginal reconstructive surgery (hide spoiler)].

I am curious to discuss. I am guessing we are probably not worried about any more active readers, but I suppose anyone could come along to read it at any time. They can consider themselves spoiler warned! :)

Oh, man, this is the part of the movie where everything goes wrong for our protagonist.

Holy Cow - what a great book - I cannot wait to watch the movie again after this. Puzo is such a great story teller - the narrative moves right along flawlessly.

John Self has cleaned up his act quite a bit. But as I head into the final pages, I am not sure he can keep the temptation of liquor, drugs, and women away!

Great! I had never even heard of this book. This group it's definitely expanding my horizons.

It has been a while since we have had a vote come in so I think I am ready to declare a winner . . . and a compromise!
From October through December 2015 we will be reading
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by
Susanna ClarkeFrom January through March 2016 we will be reading
War and Peace by
Leo Tolstoy.
I think this is a pretty good compromise and will give us some good variety on our BIG reads!

I had these polls set for a few more days, but I think that most people who are likely to vote have voted, so I will go ahead and declare an October Short Read Winner:
We will be reading
The Crying of Lot 49 by
Thomas Pynchon.
Have fun and happy reading!

This book is much better than I was expecting. Not that I thought it wouldn't be good, but I am over 80 pages in and not a boring moment yet!

Ah, the horse head scene. Only took up a couple of pages, but it was one of the most memorable images from the movie.
Like the pig scene from Deliverance which only took up a couple of pages, the filmmakers turn them into the trademarks we remember the films by.

So far so good. The writing pulled me quickly in to the Corleone family - 45 pages in and all interesting.

Finally starting this! Long enough since I saw the movie that I think it will all be fairly new to me.
