158858 Greetings! Welcome to our January through March 2016 BIG BOOK READ!

This thread will be for general discussion - be sure to mark or avoid spoilers in this thread. I will create a thread for each volume and the epilogue of the book for more in depth discussion.

Update to this from earlier this year:

I have now read 17 from the Board list - 33 from the Readers List.
158858 Greetings! We had a tie for our January 2016 book - Dead Wake and The Girl on the Train - please vote between now and December 31st at Noon for which you prefer.

Such an exciting showdown to start 2016!

158858 Well, this book didn't go quite as well for me as it did for others:

158858 OH! Things are getting exciting - its a tie between Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania and The Girl on the Train - with two other hot on their heels.

Only a few more days to vote!
Dec 23, 2015 10:53AM

158858 I really want to read it - but my TBR list is soooooooo backed up. I will come back here to discuss when I do!
158858 I am at the climax now - it still seems more dry than exciting . . .

It seems like the opinions on this are very split - either super fantastic or dry and boring. Not too much in-between.

158858 Matthew wrote: "I have read 31 of these. Some are indicating the whole series - which makes sense."

I am at 36 now - at least I will be once I finish Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - only 20 pages left. Adding 5 more this year feels good! Several more are on my TBR.

158858 Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania has the lead for now - but looks like we could expect to see a few more votes! Come by and vote if you can - no obligation to read the winner, just want to see what most people are interested in reading!

I enjoyed (maybe that is not the right word) Infinite Jest, but if I had to decide between it and 8 other titles, the decision would not be tough! :)

158858 For January 2016, we will be reading one of the Goodreads Choice Winners (that is a list, right?). I did not include series books in the voting - might be hard for some to catch up. I also left out the cookbook, poetry, and children's winners - not because I don't think we would enjoy them, but it just didn't seem like they fit with this group's normal reading plans (feel free to demand them in the comments section if you really want them, though!)

This was a good year! I am up to 24 on this list now!

158858 Anyone out there doing Crime and Punishment this month? It has been on my too read list for awhile, but all my book clubs have my TBR list backed up!
158858 Over the past few days of reading, it feels like this book has taken a very different direction somewhat incongruous with the rest of the book. I am sure that the story will tie back in . . . but, since I am having some issues focusing on the story anyway because of the dry writing, I am a bit confused.

158858 Discuss the December 2015 THIS and THAT Poll winner here.
Nov 27, 2015 11:54AM

158858 Crime doesn't pay, but Crime and Punishment is the winner!
158858 I have been in part III for a few days now. Some of it is still dragging, but I did think the section about Strange's published books disappearing was interesting.
Nov 24, 2015 07:03AM

158858 This poll ends tomorrow! Vote if you have not yet, or, feel free to change your vote to Crime and Punishment or Sense and Sensibility as it is now a showdown between those two!
