123355 Wow, that stuff about Pig Latin is awesome, Sophie! I've never heard of that.

Hm, Brendan's been mentioned to go to band practice and he rides his bike a lot. Plus he's said he's into science and I think also videogames. That's a great idea to incorporate his interests more into the series. Since the band in MBTW is pretty main it would be sort of repetitive to focus on that with Brendan. As a vampire I'm sure he's great at biking and if he's into science I doubt he struggles with it, so help with either of those probably isn't needed. So... maybe he could enter a videogaming competition or something? Kinda plucking at straws here, lol.

123355 Absolutely - I can definitely picture Charles hugging Olivia and Ivy and I'm sure him doing so has been mentioned plenty of times. It doesn't add up! Actually (this might be getting a little too in-depth!) do you reckon it was the nature of the hug that was uncharacteristic? I don't really know what kind of hug would be un-Charles-like in Sienna Mercer's eyes though.

That's a good point that Charles's bros might not have kids. I totally agree Ivy and Olivia would want to meet their cousins - and their aunts for that matter! I don't think it's already happened given how close together in time the books are set - there just isn't enough room in between books for all that to happen. Though they must have been at Charles's wedding, right? If they have met it seems weird that this is the first mention we're getting. I'd love to see them in future books - do you think we will?

123355 Wow, Lillian and Winifred is the coolest parent combination! Can you imagine; Winifred would write bestselling books and Lillian would direct the movies of them. Those two would take on the world together! Mrs Abbott certainly did a great job of hiding she's a vampire! Lol, I love that your style is the same as Brendan's dad - he's so work obsessed I doubt he pays any attention to his clothes! Tough luck there. The first storyline you mentioned from Puppy Love sounds like a pretty cool life story, not sure about the second one though...

Message:

Hello members! We hope 2016's treated you well and you're enjoying the holiday season.

We're very excited to announce that My Sibling the Mythical Being is having another read-along for Sienna Mercer's awesome books. We'll start by reading the My Brother the Werewolf series; Cry Wolf (MBTW#1) in January 2017 and continue by reading through a book a month. The My Sister the Vampire read-along will start in May. This is super flexible - you can read some, all or none of the books at any time you so wish, but if, like us, you want a little extra motivation to read or re-read these books, this is the perfect opportunity!

You can find threads for all the books over in the group and we hope to have some great discussions as we read through them. They're always open and again how much you participate is totally up to you.

The Cry Wolf thread is here (beware of spoilers if you haven't read it yet): https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Have a great day and happy reading!

Your moderators,
Sophie and Daisy :)

123355 Since we had so many ideas above for new topics (and I've had a couple since we last did this) here's a round two! The topics are:

-The hidden vampire in your life:
-The hidden bunny in your life:
-The person who makes you really good veggie burgers/rare steaks:
-Your adoptive parent(s):
-The person who thinks you can't keep the Blood Secret:
-The person who would introduce you to the Holiday Bat:
-The person whose life aspiration you share:
-The person whose style you share:
-The book that is the story of your life:

As always if you guys have any more feel free to do those too. For the last one obviously you have to pick a random book instead of a random character. Here's what I got...

-The hidden vampire in your life: Olivia
-The hidden werewolf in your life: Lillian
-The hidden bunny in your life: Mr Morgan (Debi's dad)
-The person who makes you really good veggie burgers/rare steaks: Jessica Phelps
-Your adoptive parent(s): Jackson and Sophia
-The person who thinks you can't keep the Blood Secret: Riley
-The person who would introduce you to the Holiday Bat: Justin
-The person whose life aspiration you share: Camilla
-The person whose style you share: Prince Alex
-The book that is the story of your life: Flipping Out (MSTV#14)

I just picked some random characters from both MSTV and MBTW, thought that might have been a mistake seeing how random this turned out! It's cool that Olivia's sercretly a vampire and Lillian's a werewolf, but honestly I never doubted Mr Morgan was a bunny! Jackson and Sophia as my adoptive parents is sort of weird but it could be a lot worse. I guess if I'm sharing Camilla's life aspiration I want to be a famous movie director, and with Prince Alex's style I'll always look formal and presentable. I was hoping to get Camilla's style but I imagine he has pretty good fashion sense too. And the story of my life is being the unwilling most popular girl in school and being a matchmaker... uh, OK! Overall really weird picks but it turned out not too bad!

123355 Those are great - I'll add them. For his favourite song shall we go with Moonlight Girl - the one he wrote for Debi? I doubt he's that arrogant that his own song is his favourite but you know! I imagine his favourite colour is black because he's described as wearing dark rocker clothes and stuff like that - I don't know that's just what I imagine!

His favourite food is probably red meat since he's a werewolf, and his favourite school subject I assume is music. His best friend could be Justin and his worst enemy could be either Milo or Mackenzie - what d'you reckon? He's probably most likely to be found carrying a guitar too and for doing maybe it should be trying not to phase into a werewolf? Haha.

So I'll add all these to the profile but if anyone has any different suggestions feel free to suggest them and we can put those up there instead. :)

123355 Alright, I have more on the Charles's siblings mystery we talked about earlier in this thread! In Fangs for the Memories (MSTV#18) he said this:

"As soon as all this business with Jackson is over, I insist that you [Ivy] call your grandparents in Transylvania to give them the good news [Ivy's new power] yourself. My parents will be thrilled . . ." His lips curved into an outright smirk. "And my sisters will be very jealous, because not one of their children has had this happen. I only wish I could be there to seetheir reactions!"

So I guess this confirms he has sisters like the ASHH file said (maybe when Horatio said about his brothers he was just remembering wrong or something - it was like 200 years ago :D ) but now they have KIDS?! How did we not know about this? He's saying this in front of Ivy so her and Olivia must know they have cousins. Do you think they've met them? Will they be in it in future? Let's discuss!
Nov 18, 2016 03:47AM

123355 I know it's been a while since we've talked about this book but I just found a page of notes I made when I was reading it so here's the random thoughts I had on there that we haven't talked about on the thread yet:

Here's a quote from page 74:

"I'll explain everything later," Charles told her. "But remember: for now we must be silent on the subject!"
"I know, I know," she called back as she sped out into the front hallway. Icks-nay on the ampire-vay uff-stay when Jackson's around! She rolled her eyes. Did he really think she would forget after all this time?

So I was super confused by Ivy's thoughts here - is she speaking in some kind of weird detective code? If so what is she saying? (to give you a bit of context Charles and Ivy were just talking about Ivy's power to tell when people are lying, and how it might come in handy for an investigative reporter) This bit was just really weird to me!

Also can we talk about this quote (from page 75):

"I'm really sorry Jackson, but would it be OK if I talk to Olivia alone in my room for just a couple of minutes? I'm . . . uh . . . really upset. About . . ." Her [Ivy's] mind went blank. ". . . Something?"
Oh, yeah, real smooth, Ivy. Sooooo convincing.
Jackson's eyebrows shot up. "Of course." He hung his coat on the hook and stepped back. "I'll wait for you guys in the dining room. But Ivy . . ." He gave her a look of deep concern. "Whatever's going on with you and Brendan . . . I'm sure it'll be OK. You guys are really great together."
"Thanks." Ivy restrained herself from rolling her eyes as she tugged Olivia with her towards the stairs.
Why did boys always assume that boys were the only things that girls ever got upset about?

I'm so with Ivy on this one - just when I was growing to like Jackson again since him and Olivia got back together he says this! I don't really get why this was included. Anyway, this also got me thinking about Ivy and Brendan. It would be nice in a way to get a little more conflict in their relationship (aside from that dumb cheating storyline in Secrets and Spies {MSTV#15} I mean), since Brendan's not really been in it much recently and when he is his and Ivy's relationship is like totally perfect. Anyone have any ideas for possible storylines for them?

123355 Let's get started on our character profile for Daniel! If you don't know what I'm talking about, I explain about the character profiles we're doing in the Olivia Abbott thread. Any ideas for Daniel? :)

123355 So I have a couple of thoughts to kick us off...

Reiko coming from Japan opens up this whole thing about international vamps (aside from the ones from Transylvania we've seen earlier in the series). However in her email to Ivy at the end of Secrets and Spies (MSTV#15) she kind of implies she doesn't know many other vamps:

I like sports - which I've always played, ever since I was very small. I started with soccer and I still love it, but it's hard to play with non vamps. [...] Now I play tennis mostly - as you can imagine, I am the undefeated REIGNING CHAMPION at my school!

So do you think there's less vamps in Japan or something? Or am I reading this wrong?

Also, on the subject of this email, Reiko's email address is Reiko@banpmail.com - not many people must use banpmail for her to get a username that was only her first name, lol.

Anyways, as Reiko says in the email, she loves sports, and we see a lot of that in the following book Fashion Frightmare (MSTV#16). When I first read that I thought Reiko came across a very two-dimensional since her sole interest seems to be just sports. Did anyone else feel like that? I mean I do think it's cool that she likes sports (though I'm not a huge fan of tennis), but she's like a maniac about it!

123355 I agree - MSTV is great for escapism and if you just want something to cheer you up, which Jacqueline Wilson's books don't seem to be as much.

Since the rest of this thread is pretty out of date do we have any new recommendations? I still think Goddess Girls is a good series for people looking for something similar to MSTV, but I will say I've kind of gone off it since we last talked about it. I still like it for the friendship and the adaptations of Greek myths and stuff but I've realised it is quite childish. I don't know if I'll ever grow out of MSTV but I'm definitely growing out of Goddess Girls. My other two recs though I still stick by.

As for new stuff, I've been purging my Middle Grade shelf on Goodreads and the Kat, Incorrigible trilogy by Stephenie Burgis is a series I know both us mods really love. We've talked about it before in the Exciting News! thread, but I thought it was worth the mention here too. It's basically about a 12-year-old girl named Kat growing up in Regency England, who discovers magic and endevours to save her family from social disgrace using it. There's awesome family elements, a supernatural twist and a little romance. Kat's a really stubborn, fiesty and (to me) lovable character, so it's definitely really good if you like MSTV, or even if you don't! My description doesn't really do it justice, but really these books are seriously great.

I'd also recommend The Revenge of the Shadow King by Derek Benz and J.S. Lewis. It's the first in a trilogy but I've only managed to get my hands on this first one, and really enjoyed it. It's about a group of friends who play a card game together, and then the mythical creatures from their card game start appearing in their town, and they have to work out what's going on. The friendship's quite humorous and the adventure's (while maybe not all that original) entertaining. I'd say it's for a slightly younger audience than MSTV (the protagonists are 11 or 12 I think?) but a quality Middle Grade book on the whole.

Then there's Popular: Vintage Wisdom for a Modern Geek by Maya van Wagenen. This is actually non-fiction, written by a 14-year-old girl who did an experiment to see if a 1950s (?) popularity guide could get her popular in her modern day school. It's a really entertaining and heart-warming story I'm sure lots of MSTV fans would love.

That's all I can find right now. Does anyone else have any?
Oct 30, 2016 04:46AM

123355 Yeah, she was talking to Reiko who'd come as a droid from a Japanese manga comic she loves. :)

123355 Found a couple more references...

From Secrets and Spies (MSTV #15):

From the garnet brooch pinned to her velvet black beret to the black-and-white silk Charlie Chaplin outfit she wore, Camilla was definitely dressed up.

I just opened the book and found this so i'm not exactly sure what's happening, but I think it's some kind of opening party for (view spoiler). If you look up what Charlie Chaplin wore though it seems more like Camilla was dressing up for some kind of fancy dress party! Always the eccentric. :D

Also there's this one from Spooktacular (MSTV #17):

Ivy shrugged. "They'll probably think you're something from Star Wars."

Plus Ivy compares herself a lot to Sherlock Holmes in this book. Weird that we haven't found any in Brother the Werewolf yet, isn't it?

123355 So on the Amazon synopsis for Fangs for the Memories (MSTV #18) it says at the end:

A vampire book for girls who want to read about young love and innocent paranormal romance. Ideal for fans of Jacqueline Wilson, Meg Cabot, and Zoe (Zoella) Sugg.

I'm interested to see if any of you guys have read any of these authors' books - and would you agree My Sister the Vamp is similar to them? I've never read Zoella's books but I read one of Jacqueline Wilson's books yeeeears ago (I think it was Bad Girls) and I didn't really enjoy it. I remember it having some.. how do I put this... darker themes? Like bullying and I think there was something about the protagonist not liking/being ashamed of her parents. To be honest though I was really impressionable and read only light, happy books back then so it was probably a lot less depressing than I thought it was. Still, I think MSTV probably doesn't cover as deep stuff as Jacqueline Wilson's books, so if you like MSTV for the fluffiness (or Wilson's books for the grittiness) you might not enjoy both.

As for Meg Cabot, I've recently been reading through her Princess Diaries series and I'd say it's a pretty good recommendation for people who like MSTV. They don't have that much in common, but they're both contemporaries with a twist (vampires and princesses... pretty much the same thing right?) and they're about the same age range. I loved the first three books but I hated the fourth and the rest from there have been pretty 'meh' so it's not perfect, but I'd say at least the start of the series is worth the read.
