123355 Man, I thought that would take you longer. Yes, that's correct.

123355 Thanks! I know, this is a really fun thing to look out for as we read the books. You found some cool references - Lucky Break seems to have a lot in it. Looking forward to seeing what other ones we can find!

123355 ... I don't even know what to say to that! Backing away grinning like a maniac pretty much sums up my excitement about this too! I'm so going to do that when I get my hands on the book! :D

123355 Off the top of my head these are the ones I remember:

In Switched (MSTV #1) Olivia reads The Horla by Guy de Maupassant, and Ivy later says it's 'killer'. We talked more about this in the Switched discussion, but in short I read it a couple of months ago and quite enjoyed it.

In Lucky Break (MSTV #7) Camilla directs a sci-fi adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, which I thought was awesome because I love Shakespeare and this is one of my favourites of his plays. When trying to convince everyone this would be a good idea Camilla also references Forbidden Planet (a 1950s sci-fi adaptation of The Tempest). I haven't seen this yet but I'm planning to watch it soon - if Camilla likes it I'm sure I will!

Actually while looking for those in the book I just found two more:

Olivia left the dressing room and walked into the huge backstage space that had tons of props from previous productions, like a giant tree that a person could fit into, from the musical Into the Woods.
Olivia pushed her way past a group of girl doing vocal exercises to sit down on a Victorian sofa from The Importance of Being Earnest and started from the top.

I've never seen Into the Woods but I think they made a film remake recently...? I read The Importance of Being Earnest recently, which I really liked, except I thought the ending was really disappointing.

In Spooktacular (MSTV #17) at the Halloween party there are some references to The Hunger Games here:

...Olivia followed her twin around the edges of the dancefloor, passing witches and wizards, orcs and elves, and three Katnisses from The Hunger Games. "There are a lot of great costumes here" she said as she passed a perfect Peeta.

I've never read Hunger Games but I've watched the first film and this reference amused me when I read Spooktacular. That's all I can think of right now but I'm sure there's many more!

123355 Hey guys! There is actually a surprising number of references to real-life stuff in Sienna Mercer's books (MSTV more than MBTW, but there might be a couple in that series too), so I thought I'd make this discussion for us to spot and record as many as we can! It'll be interesting to see how these things many of us may be familiar with are represented in Sienna Mercer's writing, then once we've spotted them, I thought it'd be fun for us to discuss whether we've read/seen/heard of any of these things and what we thought of them.

Please don't post any major spoilers for either of the series in this discussion, but if you do want to make a spoilery point, you can hide it in spoiler tags like this < spoiler > insert spoiler here < / spoiler > except without the spaces. Thanks and have fun!

123355 Ivy?
Jul 14, 2016 02:12AM

123355 Nope. :)
Jul 14, 2016 02:01AM

123355 Who became captain of the cheerleading squad at the end of Switched (MSTV #1)?
Jul 14, 2016 02:00AM

123355 All right, here's a hard one:

"I have a good feeling . . . It is definitely going to happen tonight!"

123355 Sage wrote: "G. Garlic (Ivy is allergic, as are most vampires.)"

Hmm, aren't they all allergic? :)

I. Introduce (from Spooktacular {MSTV #17} As Reiko stoop up too, Ivy gestured towards her. "Oh, and I should introduce...")

123355 OK, I actually just checked in Spooktacular and it actually just say 'Coming in 2016' not 'Coming in Summer 2016' like I thought it did for some reason. So all hope is not yet lost...

123355 Guuuuyyyyyys!! It's halfway through the summer now and still no sign of the 18th book being announced! I can't wait much longer to see if Jackson will find out! Let's share the pain of waiting together, haha.

123355 I don't blame you for renting the MSTMB books, Sage - buying all of them is definitely a commitment! Since I already have all the ones that are out whenever there's a new one I'm like "Well, I might as well own this one too since I have all the rest..." It's becoming quite an obsession, haha. They're really nice looking books though and I reread random ones quite a lot so I love having them, even if they take up quite a lot of room on my bookshelf!

123355 Hey again Sage! Don't worry about not being active - I've been absent for ages since the run-up to my exams in May... D: Definitely need to get to back to dedicating more time to this group!

Ooh, I like this discussion. I agree with Sophie about MSTV and MBTW books - I would cry giving them back to the library if I didn't buy them! Plus they look really nice and aren't that big so I love owning them. In general though I don't buy books much - only really ones I've already read or that I'm pretty sure I'm going to love (a pretty cover doesn't hurt either). Still trying to catch up with the huge pile of books I haven't yet read that I already own to buy more! If I don't already own it I'll get it from the library or occasionally get the ebook if I don't want to wait for the library to get it in. I also love audiobooks so I get a lot of those too. Physical books rule though, of course. A bit of everything for me really!

123355 Errr, I'm going to randomly guess Camilla...?
