123355 Hey all, this is our character discussion for Reiko (I don't think her surname is ever said), the vampire exchange student from Japan who appeared in the 16th (Fashion Frightmare) and 17th (Spooktacular) MSTV books. Do you have any thoughts on her character? Discuss them here!

As always, as this is in our spoiler folder, spoilers for any books in the MSTV series are allowed here, so if you haven't read them all, watch out! Have fun!

123355 Yo guys, I wanted to talk about what we think of Charles's character throughout the MSTV series. Personally I think in from Sercrets and Spies (MSTV #15) onwards he doesn't really feel like the same character as he was in the earlier books. He's a lot more childish and gets crazily obsessed with work (he's always been kind of a workaholic I think but the whole museum thing in Secrets and Spies just felt really unrealistic to me). Before he was quite suave and dignified, now he seems quite energetic and doesn't seem to take as much of an interest in Ivy and Olivia's lives. He seems to have slipped into the whole 'annoyingly childish dad' cliche which I really don't think he was before.

The main thing that made me want to talk about this was a line in Fangs for the Memories:

Rising to his feet, Charles wrapped his arms around Olivia in a warm and uncharacteristic hug.

Since when it it uncharacteristic of him to give his daughter a hug? I get the impression he's quite a conserved guy, but I can totally imagine him showing affection to his kids. Any of you think this was weird?

So, what do you guys think of this? Is this all in my head, or do you think Charles's character became quite inconsistent too? Or do you think this is him just getting older (or the twins getting older, so they're less open to hugs from their dad) - or even a mid-life crisis?! :D

123355 How do you always guess these so fast?! Correct!
Oct 11, 2016 10:56AM

123355 Yes! Well done!

123355 What is the first word of Cry Wolf (MSTV#1):

a) Daniel
b) Bright
c) The
d) Tossing

123355 Nope, way off. :D

123355 Which of these is not one of Jackson's phobias (as mentioned in Fangs for the Memories {MSTV#18}?

a) Darkness
b) Bugs
c) Mice
d) Clowns

123355 P. Party (there's been multiple parties in the two series)

123355 Ooh, I think Logan Lerman could be really good as Brendan, if he adopted a gothic look. Great idea! No, I don't remember any diverse ethnicities being mentioned. But that could easily be changed in a screen adaptation.

I love your answer to question 7 - the secret vamp places would be really cool to see. I'd love to see the Lazar manor and royal palace in Transylvania from Love Bites (MSTV #6). I've always loved the exotic posh locations in that book.

123355 Hmm, that's a really interesting point about seeing the characters' interactions in a less stressful environment. Looking back it was nice to have all the characters not hiding anything from eachother. Plus I see where your coming from, Sophie, about the twins not saying stuff to eachother. I remember it being quite annoying when they kept thinking I can't tell my twin this because I wouldn't want to worry them before I have proof. Still, I guess I wasn't used to the characters' new attitudes in this book and the more relaxed format just didn't work for me. Maybe I'm just not as invested in the characters anymore so without all the drama I didn't care as much...?

On that subject I love your point, Kaushikee, about not being as enticed by the books anymore. I still get really invested when I reread the earlier books (which is weird because I know what's going to happen) but for some reason these later books don't really do it for me anymore. I agree with Sophie though, having this group has really helped keep my interest alive.

About the whole vampire/werewolf thing, I think some of each community probably know about eachother (possibly the Vamp Round Table?), though that thing about Ivy and Sophia seeming to know in Fangtastic then not later on I'm pretty sure is a mistake. It's worked out for the best though because now we get this whole finding out storyline!

I'm thinking the crossover will happen in the next MSTV since it was hinted in this series and it is kinda Sienna Mercer's main one. Plus the last crossover was in MBTW. The idea of having it from both perspectives sounds awesome but that doesn't seem very likely to me.

I definitely agree, Sophie, about Jackson's reaction. It was realistic that he didn't believe it at first but then he was just like, "Oh, Ivy has purple eyes, but she's nice, so vampires exist and I'm fine with that!" Like if you found out vamps exist, wouldn't you wonder if they really sleep in coffins and drink blood and stuff like Olivia did?!

I enjoyed that scene as well with Brendan in the diner. But I thought it was really badly set up the way the girls started confessing and how they just assumed Ivy could tell when people were lying just because she suggested the music teacher might not have been in a band. I mean that's a pretty obvious thing to suggest! But hey, it was humorous anyway.

Anyways this comment is way too long already - so much to talk about with this new book!! I'll stop for now though, haha.

123355 OK, I'll add those to the profiles! :) Yeah, that'll be a fun to do when re-reading the books.

123355 I finished this book a few days so here are a few of my thoughts. So excited to start discussing this book!

So first of all, did you guys think Ivy's new power was totally obvious? Because I guessed it on literally the first page when she said about Franklin Grove being allergic to the truth. Also I think the nine senses thing is really cool but being raised by a vampire, how come Ivy never knew about it? It seems like a pretty big aspect of your child's life that they should know about!

I'd say my main complaint about this book was that I felt like it had very little tension. Ivy's power was revealed really early on and any uncertainties around it were cleared up by Charles and Lillian like it was nothing. Then there was the Jackson storyline - but he was told about the secret really early on too and was totally fine with it! OK, so there was still the trials he had to do, but I don't think there was that much chance of that not working out. In a lot of the other MSTV books it's all leading up to a climax like 'How is this person going to react when this happens?' or 'When is this going to be revealed?' you know, and I felt like that one didn't really have that.

On a more positive note, I loved the callback to Revamped (MSTV #3) in the beginning with them going back to ASHH and seeing Frankie the bodyguard! I'd love to see more mentions of events from early in the series in future books - it's very nostalgic haha. Also that that thing where the Vamp Round Table could darken Jackson's heart was AWESOME in my opinion. I love how they just kept coming up with ways to make Jackson's trials harder - though that thing where only the person who wants to tell the secret can vouch for the person finding out was getting a little ridiculous!

Talking of ridiculousness, I really don't think it's very believable that the Vamp Round Table have been filming Olivia through EVERYTHING in the last 15 books. But if they really did, they are seriously paranoid!

What did you guys think of the cornfield scene? To be honest I found it pretty hard to get into because it just didn't feel very like MSTV to me. It was too much fantasy-adventure-y for me I guess and not enough modern paranormal mysteriousness... if that makes any sense. I was definitely on Jackson's side in his and Olivia's arguement too so I was kind of annoyed with Olivia in that part. I mean, poor Jackson was in the middle of facing all of his worst fears - you can't really blame him for getting a little tense with Olivia since she was the one who told them all his fears. I know she was tricked, but I felt like she was really playing the victim in that scene and I don't think that was fair given Jackson's situation.

And of course we MUST talk about the hinting in the interview at the end!! I am so freaking happy that the vampires are gonna find out about werewolves!! Could this mean another MSTV-MBTW crossover on the horizon? I really hope so!

123355 I've added the three new categories that I suggested in the Ivy thread to Olivia's profile - what d'you guys think for the answers?

Also I was thinking, since the Hobbies and Most Likely to be Found Doing categories are really similar, we could interpret Most Likely to be Found Doing as more actions than hobbies. For example Ivy's could be shooting a death stare, and Olivia's might be doing a cheerleader double-clap.

123355 Oh yeah, that book was The Horla. I'll add that to the list.

So her worst enemy's gotta be Charlotte Brown, right? Also I think she would most likely be found wearing her chunky black boots. And I'd say her catchphrase is 'Oh my darkness'.

What are we thinking about her favourite school subject? She writes on the school paper, so maybe English...? I don't remember her saying it anywhere.
Sep 30, 2016 07:05AM

123355 Yeah, I love the red colour too. Whoa, did not see Ivy's mutated foot before you pointed it out! Didn't she have something similar going on on an earlier cover? Oh yeah, I remember, on the Fashion Frightmare (MSTV #16) cover we talked about how her feet were insanely small - literally as big as her eyes!

Also, I've just noticed Ivy's holding that guitar with one hand and there's no strap - how?! That's either a really light guitar or she's like inhumanly strong. :P

123355 9. Mythical creatures being relieved at not having to hide themselves at Halloween (this was mentioned in Howl-oween {MBTW #3} and Spooktacular {MSTV #17})

123355 Thanks! Yeah, for some reason I remember all those obscure bits of trivia like that, I'm nerdy like that, haha. OK, will add those thing to the profile.

Sure, those things sound like stuff she'd be found doing. Maybe rehearsing her lines too - she seems to spend a lot more time doing that than actually acting! Reading magazines could be another thing - I reckon her having a magazine on her bed has been mentioned a few times. The maybe Skyping Ivy? They do that a lot if one of them is away.

123355 Those are all great, Sophie. I think the TV show you're talking about is called Shadowtown - the one everyone thinks is really bad but Ivy loves? Yeah, Marshmallow Platelets sounds right, I can't really remember.

I feel like her favourite book was mentioned but I don't remember what it was. I'd say her fav song is I Wear My Sunglasses at Night - that's mentioned quite a bit - and her favourite celebrity could be the band The Killer Bees. In Star Style (MSTV#8) she was sitting in the same room as them and freaking out about it.
