123355 No, but EVEN CLOSER!

123355 Oh yeah I think I remember Poochy being in Howl-oween. We're going to make ourselves really disappointed if he's not after all this aren't we!

Yeah, I feel like that's kind of a trademark of Sienna Mercer's writing - the funny POV switches. You can spot quite a lot throughout the two series. They never get old!

Rrrright the football thing seems a little clearer now. I wonder how many number/move combinations they have for Daniel to be able to call out random two-digit numbers and it to actually make a play! It does seem kinda cool though that it's not just about throwing the ball to whoever happens to be nearest to the goal and all that, but it's actually a game of tactics and having to remember the routines so that you can all work together to make it work.

123355 I agree the friendships are definitely something worth mentioning. And like Sage said in that comment, Sienna Mercer is so great at breaking stereotypes, but also using them to her advantage at the same time. No-one could really say Ivy isn't a 'real' goth - she's got all the classic traits of wearing black, liking heavy metal music and being gloomy - but she's also really friendly, likes writing and cheesy TV shows, that kind of thing. Not really sure how we could put that into a synopsis for MSTV, but it's definitely something that it deserves credit for.

On the same note I think the vampires in the series are really original, but at the same time true to classic vampires. To me the vamps and their community add a ton of spooky secrets to unravel and new mysteries to solve, not to mention the fantastical abilities they have.

So I guess what I'm thinking right now for stuff I like most are:

-the spooky but cool vampire world
-the fun, unconditional friendships
-the mysteries to unravel
-the family relationships
-the romantic relationships

I can't think of any adjectives to describe the family and romance stuff. Any ideas? I also think the exotic locations they travel to is one of my favourite things about the series, but I'm not really sure how to phrase that. This is harder than I thought it would be!

123355 So I recently re-read Cry Wolf (MBTW#1) and something I noticed was how instantly Daniel seemed attracted to Debi. Here's a quote from when he first saw her:
'The door of the truck opened. A girl about their age jumped out - and Daniel's breath caught in his throat. [...describes what she looks like...] When she turned and saw Daniel, she waved. Daniel's mind went completely blank. Her smile was sort of... dazzling. He knew that there was something he should do in response - wave back, maybe? - but all he could do was stand there . . . staring.

So I was wondering, what do you think is so interesting about Debi for Daniel? From this quote it sounds like it was just because of looks at first, but he talked to her a lot later on and still really liked her. She's super nice and everything but when you think about it her and Daniel don't really have much in common. She's quite outgoing, cheerful and wears colourful clothes, and Daniel's more the self-conscious, brooding rockstar type. So is it a case of opposites attract, do you think? Or do you see it more as a silly first crush kind of thing?

123355 Yeah that's a really good point about why people don't usually like sport. I always imagined Ivy would be great at them, because of her vamp powers like you say, so I guess that's part of the reason it felt weird to me that she hates them so much. Hmm, I don't really remember how it was covered either - if it was explained that might make it seem like less of a plot-device.

Also I've just noticed in her email Reiko says her exchange is two weeks long - is it me or did it feel like a lot longer than that?! I mean, she was in for like three books wasn't she...?

123355 Since we're now group-reading through the MBTW books, I thought it'd be a perfect time to start filling out character profiles for some of the characters! I'll start this time.

Riley's best friend's got to be Debi and her worst enemy would be Milo do you reckon? I'd say she's most likely to be seen carrying her clipboards and her hobbies are anything involving organising, as well as singing in Daniel's band. Any other ideas?
Jan 20, 2017 09:57AM

123355 Here's a pop-culture reference from Cry Wolf (MBTW#1) I found:

Riley rolled her eyes at him but didn't bother to reply. Instead, she looked past him to his bandmates. "Do you guys know 'Back in Black'?"
Huh, Daniel thought. Who knew Riley listened to AC/DC?

I didn't recognize the name of this song at first but if you listen to it I'm sure most people would recognize the intro. It's a pretty cool song, and I can imagine Riley and In Sheep's Clothing doing an awesome cover of it. Only wish we could see it!

123355 I just finished reading this (again) for the group read and here are some of my thoughts:

I think this every time I read this, but the chapter where they all realise Daniel's the wolf not Justin is so priceless. You've gotta feel sorry for Daniel (not just because he's turning into a werewolf, but because he's discovered his parents were lying to him and not Justin - poor guy!) but at the same time there were so many laugh out loud moments just like in the rest of the book, and I love the balance between heart-warming and humourous. Such a memorable scene.

I've talked about my favourite scenes in previous comments but we don't seem to have mentioned Poochy anywhere; the neighbour's dog who is obsessed with Justin! So funny. :D I don't remember if he appears in any of the later books - but I really hope he does!

I also really like the way Sienna Mercer introduced side characters like the Beasts, Mackenzie and Milo and perfectly set up opportunities for future conflicts later in the series. It's so funny how the Beasts always celebrate stuff by hurting eachother (or more often Justin)!

This is random, but did any of you notice how Debi's name changed to Debbie on page 125? Weird.

Also there's the part where Daniel's pretending to be Justin playing American Football, and he has to call a play, so he just shouts out random numbers. I tried to do some research on what 'calling plays' actually means and how it works, but I know literally nothing about American Football so I really couldn't fathom any of it! Are any of you guys more familiar with it and can explain this to me?

123355 Nope!

123355 I'm gonna guess Camilla?
Jan 12, 2017 08:29AM

123355 We are now three years old!! So proud of what the group's become and hopefully it keeps growing and getting more awesome in the future!

I've edited my (ginormous) introductory comment just to update it and get rid of all the embarrassing stuff my younger self said, lol. Hopefully it's all a little clearer now. Thanks for three awesome years!
Jan 12, 2017 07:22AM

123355 Caleb?
Jan 12, 2017 07:21AM

123355 Valencia Deborg!
Jan 12, 2017 07:20AM

123355 No, that's quite close though.
Jan 12, 2017 07:19AM

123355 LOL yeah maybe a bike storyline wouldn't be the most interesting. I love your idea of introducing new hobbies for him. Any ideas?

I've been thinking more of his sister Bethany might be cool, since she hasn't been in it since book 5 I think...? Ooh, you know what could be interesting, if she got really ill and we could learn about vamp illnesses - they've gotta have some, right? On second thought this might be kinda dark - though I'm not suggesting Bethany would die or anything. I feel like Sienna Mercer's pretty good at dealing with darker stuff (like Ivy and Olivia's mum dying) meaningfully without it dragging down the entire book, so maybe this could work? I don't know, I'd just really like to see a new aspect of the vampire world and more with Brendan so this was the combination I came up with.... insight into the darkness of Daisy's mind I guess...

123355 Oops, yeah I didn't even see that! Haha, don't worry, those are great. I reckon Daniel is more his best friend so I'll put that up there.

This is definitely a hard one. I guess he's most likely to be carrying a football and I'd say his worst enemy is Mackenzie. His fave school subject could possibly be P.E/Gym???

123355 Welcome Nice! Looking forward to seeing you around in the group! :)

123355 I've added a character profile to the top of this thread, so let's start filling it in! If you're unsure how this works, I explain about the character profiles we're doing in the Olivia Abbott thread. So, what are we thinking for Justin?
Dec 15, 2016 11:25AM

123355 Hey guys! The idea for this discussion came from the description of the Sister the Vamp series on the Amazon blurb of the most recent book (Fangs for the Memories):

A vampire book for girls who want to read about young love and innocent paranormal romance.

I don't know about you, but I'm really not happy with this description of one of my favourite book series. I mean, love and romance are basically the same thing, right? While I think the relationships in this series are certainly a credit to it (especially when looking at paranormal romance in general), it's definitely not the only thing it's about or the only thing it deserves praise for.

So, I thought we should try and come up with some better definitions and descriptions of MSTV in this discussion. I'm sure not many people know what's good about these books better than My Sibling the Mythical Being members!

Just a quick reminder as well - this is a NON-spoiler discussion, so please don't post major spoilers for the series here, or hide them in tags like this < spoiler > enter spoiler here < / spoiler > only without the spaces. Have fun! :)

123355 OK, that makes more sense about her not knowing as many vamps. Plus you're right, they might not want to play with her - I probably wouldn't seeing how competitive she is!

I'm glad you brought up Ivy actually because when I thought Reiko came into the books it really emphasised how much Ivy (apparently) hates sport. The way this is displayed as almost a fundamental fact about Ivy has always come across really weird to me - do you see her as someone who's always hated sports? Because to me that felt like it kind of sprung out of nowhere.

I guess Reiko has some other interests - she clearly loves travel and at the Halloween party in Spooktacular (MSTV#17 - I think that's when it was) she dressed up as a character from a comic, so maybe she's into those too. Plus can we talk about how cool it is that she dyes her hair a different colour like everyday?! I don't think she's a bad character but I don't know what the point was of making her out to be this sports maniac when there's clearly more to her. I don't know - maybe I'm remembering wrong or there was a storyline that came out of it or something. I'll have to re-read the books and see!
