123355 You seem to know a lot about this! Is there something you're not telling us...? :D

123355 The jumping thing is a great addition. And thanks for clarifying their ages and school year, Brynn!

I agree Sophie, the 'first appearance' thing is really interesting to look at - it will definitely be cool as more major characters start to be introduced like Jackson, Olivia and Ivy's grandparents, and Lillian.

Totally, this is turning out to be really fun!

Also, Toby was in Switched - the Beasts brought him to the All Hallows Ball as their 'decoration'.

As far as introductions of people in Fangtastic, the only ones I can think of right now are Mr Abbott (he wasn't in the first one according to the first comment...?) and Principal Whitehead (I think??). So helpful, lol.

123355 Yeah it might make up for when we got all excited about a baby coming in MSTV and it didn't happen. :( (view spoiler)

123355 Another re-read down, here's some thoughts I had on this book:

On page 9 we learn the Beasts' names are Garrick, Kyle, Ricky and Dylan. Since the main Beast in MBTW is called Kyle, I was just wondering whether this was an intentional easter egg from Sienna Mercer, like Kyle is the same character, secretly in both series. ...Or it could be just a coincidence!

I always find it funny in the beginning of this book where it's kind of jogging your memory on what happened in the last book, how different Olivia and Ivy's descriptions are of vampire rules. Where Ivy thinks, the First Law of the Night: vampires are never supposed to reveal their true selves to an outsider in Olivias POV it's phrased as, the Number One Biggest Rule of Vampiredom: no telling. It just makes me laugh every time.

I love Ivy and Sophia's 'Code Black' secret meeting place. It's such a cool insight into their friendship. I wonder how many times they've used it before, and what for.

On the subject of Sophia, in this book (and the last one) I definitely feel she comes across the more enthusiastic one out of her and Ivy. She's the one who finds out about most of the curious stuff going on, and seems to be the one looking for solutions first. Ivy's first reaction seems to be more get away from the crowds and cameras first, ask questions later. So that's why I find Ivy nicknaming herself 'Ivy Holmes' and really getting into the role of a detective kind of weird in the later books in the series.

A small thing I thought I'd mention is when Ivy and Sophia are talking to Serena Star, and she's suspicious of them because they're goths, on page 40. Serena thinks the Meat and Greet seems morbid, so Ivy quickly says she likes Mister Smoothie too. I'm pretty sure this is the first mention of Mister Smoothie - the first time they actually go there is in Take Two (MSTV#5) if I'm remembering right. So this probably wouldn't mean much to first-time readers, but it's cool that Sienna Mercer seems to have had that idea in her head already at this point and was using it in the story. Okaaay now I realise I'm getting crazy nerdy over this tiny detail, apologies for my fangirling, everyone! :D

I really enjoyed the scenes with Charles in, allowing us to get to know him more just as the character he is now (*wink wink*) before things change. I think it's easy to get a good picture of what he's like at this point from this book. I should also mention (though I feel like I do this in every discussion) I am, as ever, amazed by how much Sienna Mercer manages to include so many of the characters (Sophia, Camilla, Brendan, Garrick, Toby, Charlotte, etc.) in these short books in a way that feels natural and valid to the story. I love that none of them fade into the background!

One character I liked a lot was Martin the cameraman, who befriended Camilla. I feel like Mercer could have easily just had a blank background cameraman character, but she didn't; she made him his own memorable person, and that's so cool in my opinion. It's just a shame he ended up working with Serena Star - he's way too cool for her!

Ooh, also who else liked the lady at the adoption agency? I thought it was great how upbeat and cheerful she was - it's nice to see the stereotype of goths (and in this case vampires) always being gloomy being broken. Good stuff!

123355 I've re-read Fangtastic (MSTV#2) now and I tried my best to keep up with the timeline. There is all the stuff with Olivia's mum's Great Aunt Edna in the 1920s, though I'm not sure if that's important enough to put in the 'before the series' section....?

Fangtastic (MSTV#2)

~Few weeks have passed since the events of Switched~

-Sunday: Garrick Stephens emerges from dead man Mr. Koontz's coffin during his funeral.
-Monday: Serena Star comes to Franklin Grove and interviews Garrick. Olivia and Camilla start their project to make a mini documentary.
-Tuesday: Toby Decker becomes Serena's assistant. Ivy and Olivia decide to start looking for their biological parents.
-Wednesday: Serena interviews a dentist about fake vampire fangs and mentions Ivy's name on TV. Ivy unsuccessfully looks for information on her birth parents at the adoption agency. Brendan finds out Ivy and Olivia are twins
-Thursday: the Beasts attempt to bite Charlotte Brown. Serena Star interviews Ivy, trying to reveal her as a vampire, then leaves Franklin Grove having failed to do so.
-Friday: Camilla and Toby find out Ivy and Olivia are twins.

I didn't do any of that fancy formatting you did, Sophie, so we can easily copy and paste it and edit it into the master timeline in the top comment, so sorry if it looks a bit scruffy right now! Looking at it now I'm not sure if I added too much unnecessary detail?Obviously if I've missed anything, as well, feel free to comment those and we can add them. ;)

123355 I've never really looked at those Scholastic editions before but the ones you guys have put up are really cool! I think the one where they're on the chaise lounge thing (Vampire School Dropout) is my favourite, though I don't remember there being a cat in that book?!
Jul 14, 2017 09:39AM

123355 I just found quite a few in Switched (MSTV#1) during my most recent re-read, here they are:

When Ivy is telling Olivia about vampires she says, "My face never gets gross and bumpy like those hacks on Buffy."

When Olivia is showing the All Hallows Ball committee her decorations: 'She'd saved the best idea for last:a bunch of old vampire movie posters she'd found on eBay.'

About Mr Vega: 'he resembled a pale Antonio Banderas' (I can kinda see this...?)

When the Beasts bring Toby Decker to the All Hallows Ball: '"We brought our decoration - our human!" the boy said, bouncing up and down on his heels excitedly. "You know, like an hors d'oeuvre," he continued with a guffaw. "That means snack."' Not sure if this one really counts but it is the real life name for appetiser or starter in French. How this Beast knows it I don't know!

123355 Ooh, that's a cool plot idea. I can so imagine someone trying to sabotage the contestants in some way (or a vampire planning to compete and reveal themselves or something) so the twins have to save the day!

Hmm, you know I'm not sure either whether she does cheerleading in high school. Maybe because she's so busy with her (view spoiler) ( < spoiler for books before Start Style {MSTV#8}!) at that point she didn't get the chance, which would be a shame. Noooooo Amelia's a goth, and has a very too-cool-for-everything attitude, especially in the beginning. Somehow I don't think cheerleading would really be her thing!

Great summary of why the 'electric shock' trope is so annoying! Agree!
Jul 10, 2017 08:22AM

123355 Oh, I remember, it was kumquat, right?
Jul 10, 2017 08:21AM

123355 Hmm, I guess Daniel did make the assumption but by the sounds of it Emma was implying it herself, how she was batting her eyes innocently and everything. Plus Debi took a step back so it seems she interpreted it as an insult. It's such a shame that actual girl characters adhere to this negative stereotype of girls! :(
Jul 10, 2017 08:16AM

123355 Oops, sorry! We've found so many now it's hard to keep track! :D
Jul 10, 2017 08:15AM

123355 I like that - that her and Charlotte are good at putting themselves out there. Do you think there's a possibility she wasn't this much of a brat when she first became popular, but the power and admiration's gone to her head?
Jul 10, 2017 08:10AM

123355 Oh my gosh that's so funny! I love the lame puns the US editions have in their titles. I wonder who comes up with them. That one works actually because the book involves reading the mystery blogger's articles, then sneaking around to try and find out who it is - Read it and Creep! :D

123355 Took me forever to get around to the reread and commenting on this discussion, but you've got some super interesting comments, as always, Soph!

Firstly I don't think Olivia would have been in the nationals. It's just a reflection of her personality - that's the most nerve-racking situation she can think of, or one she thinks about a lot.

Wow, I really didn't pay attention to that description of Ivy's house. I do remember it being on a hill though. This might sound weird but I kind of imagine Undertaker Hill being a sloped street in itself, then the houses on either side have sloped driveways up to them. That would mean the street was almost in a ditch though so I'm not sure if that's very realistic. The willow-lied driveway is an interesting detail too. When you look up pictures of that, it comes up with crazy long, flat trails - the complete opposite to how I imagine it. It's worth looking up pictures of Gothic houses as well though - a lot of those look similar to how I picture Ivy's.

Oh my gosh that's hilarious, what the series would be like if that was what the meeting was! :D

It's interesting you say that about Ivy and Brendan, because I was definitely on the 'weird' side when I read it this time around. I think I've just become more critical of books, and especially romance, since I first read this, and I picked up on that electricity line same as you. But I didn't mind it that much - having goosebumps around someone you've liked for that long is pretty normal, and they did grow more comfortable around eachother like you say. I thought Ivy's crush was a bit over the top at first, but then again all crushes are a bit over the top, aren't they? Plus the date scene makes up for any little things like that!!! SO. CUTE.

Yep, yep, yep, so agreed with your last point. It says at the end...

"Let's make a pact," Ivy suggested.
"A vampire pact?" asked Olivia.
"No." Ivy rolled her eyes. "A pact between us. A sisterhood pact."
Olivia understood. Cheerleading, dating, the ball - it had all been fun, but there was something more important.

And I think that sums it up really well. I'll never stop geeking out over this amazing book!!

123355 I agree, Sophie, those covers are awesome. Not too flashy, but they're colourful and fun and when you see one it's easy to tell it's a MSTV book, which I think is great. And they do make a seriously cool collection when they're all lined up together, like you say. Haha, that's so weird about their necks! They look like bobbleheads now I look closely! Especially on books five onwards. So would you change that if you could?

I think my favourite MSTV cover might be Date with Destiny (My Sister the Vampire #10) by Sienna Mercer . Maybe it's just because green's my favourite colour, but I think the whole colour scheme works really well and the roses, castle and gate give it this whole regal feel. Yet Ivy and Olivia look really casual and I like both their outfits.

Let's talk clothes! Which of Ivy and Olivia outfits do you like the most? For Ivy I actually think my favourite is the purple dress she's wearing on Switched (My Sister the Vampire #1) by Sienna Mercer . For Olivia I love her whole look on Star Style (My Sister the Vampire, #8) by Sienna Mercer .

OK, I've actually noticed a couple of things while looking through these covers. Has anyone else spotted how from book 5 onwards Ivy is always wearing a bat clip and Olivia two white slides? That's pretty cool. There's also some pretty wicked science lab stuff going on in the background of Revamped! (My Sister the Vampire #3) by Sienna Mercer and they seem to be putting up decorations on Vampalicious! (My Sister the Vampire, #4) by Sienna Mercer , both of which match with what happens in those books. I've never noticed that before. They all have a coffin shape in the background except 6, 7 and 8. And on the books where they show their stomachs (both on Twin Spins (My Sister the Vampire, #9) by Sienna Mercer and Olivia on Lucky Break (My Sister the Vampire, #7) by Sienna Mercer ) they don't seem to have belly buttons?! ...That's just some random stuff I found!

I like how Riley and Debi appear on the Bro covers too. Do you think to someone seeing them for the first time they might assume it was about a brother and sister, the girl being the human, the boy being 'her brother the werewolf'? I can imagine that misleading a lot of people.

I think Cry Wolf is my favourite of those too. I really like the giant moon in the background of all of them and Daniel's guitar. I guess the hands are the MBTW equivalent of MSTV's bats, to add extra detail and a kind of border. If you look closely I think they're actually meant to be werewolf claws. I suppose aside from the moon there aren't that many things associated with werewolves like there are with vamps.

Again I've noticed a random thing while looking at these covers; every time Daniel appears he's got something to identify him as a werewolf. On the first it's his t-shirt, on the second it's a badge and on the third it's a sticker on his guitar. It's like he's trying to give it away or something!

123355 Aww, thanks, S!X! The nickname isn't me claiming to be clever or anything, it's just because I seem to have a freakishly good memory when it comes to Sienna Mercer's books. It can come in handy with this group, haha. :D
Jun 23, 2017 08:23AM

123355 Yep, the one showing Jessica meeting a fan and seeming really friendly, then as soon as the fan left, she started insulting her. It was to show everyone how fake Jessica is.
Jun 23, 2017 08:20AM

123355 So in some of the MSTV books, there's a teaser paragraph at the beginning. Which book is this one from?

Whoa. Olivia felt as if her eyelids were bouncing back and forth like tennis balls over a net as she looked from Amelia to Finn and back again. Even now that Amelia had managed to force a scowl, she and Finn were still staring at eachother. It was as if they couldn't look away.
There is some seriously crushing going on, Olivia thought. Between the leaders of the two groups who seem to hate eachother the most!

Jun 23, 2017 08:07AM

123355 Not sure if this really counts but in Tail Spin (MBTW#4) Winifred Peters arrives at the hospital fundraiser in a 'pink Vespa scooter'. These are real things - very similar to a moped by the looks of them. Winifred Peters is so awesomely quirky!
Jun 23, 2017 08:03AM

123355 Oh, OK, her starting on Thursday makes more sense now. Thanks!
