The Adventuress by Joanna Russ ★☆☆☆☆ I have read, and enjoyed, a tale of Alyx the warrior thief before, but this was not worth the time she took to write it.
Fire! It warms our bones and purifies but can also destroy - especially in the wrong hands. This anthology unites twelve writers from around the world in the first book of their Elements series. Through its stories of magic, death, destruction and rebirth, this Fire anthology showcases imagination at its best. You will be enthralled from the first page to the last.
The Caravan of Forgotten Dreams by Michael Moorcock ★★★★½ “Ho, dragon brothers—loose your venom—burn—burn! And in your burning cleanse the world!”
Decades before the Targaryens hit the shelves there was “a race which loved pleasure, cruelty, and sophistication for its own sake. The race of Melnibonéans.”
I have had my eye on reading about Elric of Melniboné ever since Centipede Press came out with this gem: http://www.centipedepress.com/fantasy...
These stories have definitely moved up my mental TBR! Elric is so metal!

Cheeseburger merman PNR.
Well, those yachts were going to be impounded anyway. I started early too. I felt like some sexy Mer time. Unfortunately, the little trilogy is neither hot enough to be erotic or exciting enough to be romantic suspense. But maybe the latter stories will be spicier! Either way, it’s hot guys with pretty tails - good for a late night snack.
The Tale of Hauk by Poul Anderson ★★★☆☆ I’ve heard a historian refer to the Viking Age as the age of the pig farmer: most Scandinavians were not Vikings. Hauk, our fair hero, is the son of a Viking who decided trading was more his speed. You still have to be tough to not get robbed, but it’s not the same thing. This was just ok.
"…couple of dated descriptions in here." But wasn’t it cool to read the lusty descriptions of Conan’s body written by a male writer in a way usually reserved for women?
Ick. That would mean Guillaume was really that unbearable. But yes, there is still a whole genre of OTT Asshole Alpha Erotica novels.
That’s possible, or at least it seemed to be headed that way. Unless Guillaume conquered Joiry to impress, and marry, Jirel. That would be kind of a barbarian rose. But under a demon’s influence it could seem fully malevolent. Anyway, that’s the only way it makes sense to me.
The Unholy Grail by Fritz Leiber ★★★☆☆ When Mouse’s master is killed by Duke Janarrl, hate fills the young wizard and with it the gateway to black magic. This tale of vengeance is circuitous but gives agency to Janarrl’s beaten down daughter, Ivrian.
