110415 Maybe George has done such a botch job with the henhouse that they had to take matters into their own hands (or beaks)...

110415 @ Lee - I loved Tess of the D'Urbervilles but would prob's agree with Anna, Far from the Madding Crowd might be your best bet if you find Hardy a bit depression-inducing!
@ Hilary - I liked the Secret of Crickley Hall as well - it was fun wasn't it? I never did see the last episode of the tv adaptation - just as well I know how it ends really ;)
@ Ellie - yeah, you've caught up! And overtaken me, I'm still trying to find a Golding book to read and having no luck with Narayan at all.
110415 oooooh can I join in too? - haven't read/seen Richard III!

Love Macbeth - gutted I missed that one Hilary - I mean to go every year and see the RSC at the theatre royal but I always forget/have to work/have no money :(

110415 I love the images in this and if you read it out loud it kind of rises and falls like the waves (or maybe I'm doing that deliberately cos it's about the sea....who knows? I'm glad there's no-one about!)

110415 I think I might end up reading another one of his that I can get on kindle, I thought The Guide was a bit more available than that when it was first chosen as well Lee - bit of a mystery really!

110415 Hello Cynthia - welcome to the group, hope you like it here!
110415 Thanks Lee - I just bought that as well, love that period of history!

Ellie, I've just got in so have had to google the results - flippin' work eh? ;)

110415 Hi Wiki, welcome to the group :)

110415 I'm liking it so far, Gwenni is very sweet.
also - excited for Dante!!! But still haven't decided which translation to get....I'm dithering ;)

110415 I hope he doesn't end up with another law suit on his hands! I reckon Sam will figure something out eventually to put a stop to Jingle - it's a matter of pride now for him to get even with that Trotter bloke. And yeah I hope we get to meet Mr Weller Senior again!

When we started this, I could've taken or left this particular Dickens novel but Pickwick and Co have grown on me - it's like checking in with old (and very eccentric) friends!

110415 No probs - wouldn't want you to have a wasted trip!

I'm reading The Earth Hums in B Flat as a lighter read alongside the George Eliot bio.
On this day.... (1385 new)

110415 He was the Prime Minister who brought in the 1832 Great Reform Act which gave the vote to some of the new middle classes rather than just landowners. You still had to have money to have a vote but it started the ball rolling at least...

110415 Yeah it's pretty good, quite big and does have a decent range of books - although it doesn't have the Naryanan book, I'm going to have to order that one in by the looks of things. They are closed till the end of the month though cos they're getting a refurb.

110415 I haven't got anything to compare it to either so not really sure - just feels a little flat if you know what I mean? I'll keep reading and try and put my finger on it - I can't decide if it's the book or the translator.

Well The Light Between Oceans was everywhere when it came out - if it wasn't a Richard and Judy book club book then it should have been cos it's just that sort of novel. I did enjoy it, it was decently written and I cared about what happened to the characters but... as with a lot of 'book-clubby' type books it probably won't stay with me for a long time hence 3 stars rather than 4.
If it was the George Eliot one you meant - I was just randomly looking through the biography section in Sunderland library ;)

110415 Yeah I had to go onto Amazon to find out the translator's name (which I've forgotten again oops!) so yours might be the same as mine - how are you finding it?
Mar 12, 2014 02:39PM

110415 It does sound really good doesn't it?

I've just finished The Light Between Oceans and now I'm reading George Eliot: The Last Victorian and catching up with Pickwick and Co.

110415 I liked it, wasn't quite what I expected but a sweet story at the end, although Nao goes through some pretty horrible stuff at times. I didn't love it so I wouldn't say it should be winning any awards but it is a good read.

110415 I read the first few pages on the way back to the car and it seemed very promising - hoping to get to it sooner rather than later!

110415 Which translation is everybody reading? Just cos I'm not sure I like the one I've got but it was the almost free version for the kindle.
