I'm supposed to be on a diet too but it's suspended over the bank holidays - there's no way I'm missing out on chocolate eggs lol! And yay for old fashioned hot cross buns too (especially with homemade rhubarb and ginger jam mmmmm)- although that might have been another thread....
41. Michele Roberts - Ignorance42. Clyde Edgerton - Walking Across Egypt
43. Colum McCann - Let the Great World Spin
44. Robert Chambers - The King in Yellow and Other Horror Stories
45. China Mieville - Kraken
It looks really good but also very large - I have read books this long before but usually fantasy stuff so reads a bit easier!
I'm aiming to start this is the next day or so but I think it will probably be a long time before I finish it cos my copy's 1130 pages long! A bit daunting but here goes...
Always happens doesn't it? - fingers crossed for you and hopefully the rain will let up! (Although I doubt it as it's a bank holiday weekend coming up....)
@ Lee - will probably be starting soon, shall I set a thread up?@Toyah - let us know how you get on with The Beautiful and the Damned - I love Gatsby and am itching to try some more of Fitzgerald's stuff!
I'm dipping in and out of 'The Idiot' but I'm also reading China Mieville's Kraken which is fun. Also just picked up The Man Without Qualities from the library today so will probably be reading that for the next 6 months too ;)
Yeah I didn't vote for it either as I really didn't like the film but we'll see how we go...Isn't it funny how we are bothered by the religion in Ben Hur but we're fine about Dante?
I really liked Ignorance, I liked her writing style - I think it was the first bit that won me over because she was describing a scene involving a painter in a very painterly way, almost impressionistic which I really liked. I haven't started 'Daughters of the house' yet so can't comment on that one.
It was your glowing review that prompted me to buy it when it was on sale so cheers! Really liked it.
I like the sound of your book Jenny - inferno has been referenced in so many things since Dante wrote it so that bit sounds really interesting!Shall we say if we want to discuss anything specific to just stick it in a spoiler labelled with that Canto number? I'm behind as well - I have only read the first two cos have been a bit busy
@Hilary - I loved Let the Great World Spin, really good writing, interesting set of stories that all link together and really liked the use of the tightrope walker's stunt - would definitely recommend it.
Interesting links Lee - I especially like the Lego one!How is everyone reading it - Are you just reading it through or researching as well?
I'm roughly going through a Canto a day as I'm reading the notes and looking through some commentaries and stuff and I'm jotting down my thoughts and things I find out as I go.
I'm trying to make a bit more of an effort with our monthly authors so I've checked out a copy of Daughters Of The House and also her memoir Paper Houses: A Memoir Of The 70s And Beyond from the shiny new library in sunderland.
I'm reading Dante and also Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann - both fantastic, albeit in totally different ways.
