Join the 2013 Reading Challenge

Ring in the new year: The century is officially a teenager! What will you do with your 2013? January is that magical time of goal-making. Will you learn a new language or commit to the gym twice a week? More importantly, how many books will you read? Make a reading resolution with the 2013 Reading Challenge, and Goodreads will help you hit your target.
Simply set a goal, any goal—it can be as low or high as you want—and Goodreads will track your progress. We'll let you know when you're falling behind and when you're out ahead! Be as aggressive or conservative as you like. The average goal set in 2012 was 58 books for the year (approximately a book per week), but we see a wide range of targets.
And if you need to pad your to-read list, there are a plethora of ways to find books on Goodreads! You can try out your personalized recommendations, which only need 20 rated books before you can recieve reading suggestions based on your personal taste. Or, browse the winners and nominees of the 2012 Goodreads Choice Awards. And don't forget to peruse the thousands of lists on Listopia and enter giveaways to win brand-new books! We also recommend that you browse for groups reading your to-read books or groups near you to find a great place for discussion.

Now in its third year, our reading challenge is such an inspiring indicator of reading enthusiasm. In 2011, 154,169 participants pledged to read more than 10 million books. In 2012, 303,232 participants pledged to read 17.8 million books. And we expect 2013 to blow past these numbers!
There's something about the sound of "2013" that truly feels like the future. And since the apocalypse didn't come on 12/21/2012, let's embrace the new year and all it has to offer. How many books will you pledge?

Same here, though I actually cracked the screen on my Kobo so it might've been a whole month for me. :/
oh yeah good luck y'all I'm going at head on and read like 50 or so and write my own book y'all should read it I have the first five or so chapters up
It boggles my mind that some people have to be so pessimistic about the challenge and post negative comments. Reading, unless you're in a book club, can be such a solitary experience. Sometimes people want to feel connected to other readers, this challenge helps make that happen by opening a dialogue for a goal.

I know I won't read 200 books this year I'm to busy but others might want to show of and to be honest I don't give a crap about that. so as long you don't put people down then be free and be grateful we made it through a great year.

That's a great idea, hope you don't mind if I borrow the idea!! :) Although a better one for me would probably be to say I have to read at least 7 'classic' books this year. That's a bit of an incentive to read them!
Setting mine at 25. 20 was tougher than I thought last year due to work. Hope I break 25 by a long way.

You are more than welcome to borrow the idea. I might add more classics next year. I have a tendency to lean more towards young adult sci fi and fantasy books
This is just the best site for all booklovers!! So excited to begin a new challenge this year. Happy reading bookdwellers!! :-)
Finally! I've been waiting to start my challenge of reading the "big books" this year (i.e. 1,000 pgs or more). Can't wait to get started!
I haven't been doing so great this past year but before that for the past few years I rocked it. I set mine at 104. Two a week. Fingers crossed...
I set mine to 100. My Goodreads account states that I read far less than that but I didn't have an entire year of keeping track to go by and I know I read at least that many. :)

You know, I once racked up just under 60 books in two months. That's almost a book a day. Do I win?
How about if you want to do the challenge you do it and (or not) participate and if you don't want to, you don't?
Just because someone else likes to track progress doesn't mean they're any worse than you. I have a journal dating back going on four years now with EVERY TITLE I read during that time. FOR ME. And I LOVE IT.
Happy New Year, everyone! First time joining this challenge, so I'm setting my target at 40. Here's hoping I reach it. Good luck to all!
I am another who is has fallen short of his goal in 2012 in addition to losing weight, become physically and financially fit. I am going to reach my goal this year. I am going for at least 2 a month. I am sure I can do it.
i think that in 2014 it would be nice to have the option to do x number of books or x amount of pages to read. just an idea
Woohoo! How many to do this year? I made 115 of 100 for 2012 and I didn't even enter half the books I read. Considering doing 200.
It's nice to have a goal at the start of the year. Yay! this is my first time to participate. I hope i can back it up :)My target goal is 50 ;D
Kate wrote: "I was short by two books in 2012. looking forward to beating it in 2013!"I was ahead by two books so we are balanced. My goal in 2012 was 50 and for 2013 I set it at 60.
I read 34 last year with my goal set at 30. I started midyear. I am so glad I did it. SO now I am going to set my goal for 50.

There are so many people who just publish books, and the books are awful. It's sad, a waste of paper. So just pick wiser :) Hope you enjoy your books this year, Michelle.
