Join the 2013 Reading Challenge

Posted by Jessica on January 1, 2013

Ring in the new year: The century is officially a teenager! What will you do with your 2013? January is that magical time of goal-making. Will you learn a new language or commit to the gym twice a week? More importantly, how many books will you read? Make a reading resolution with the 2013 Reading Challenge, and Goodreads will help you hit your target.

Simply set a goal, any goal—it can be as low or high as you want—and Goodreads will track your progress. We'll let you know when you're falling behind and when you're out ahead! Be as aggressive or conservative as you like. The average goal set in 2012 was 58 books for the year (approximately a book per week), but we see a wide range of targets.

And if you need to pad your to-read list, there are a plethora of ways to find books on Goodreads! You can try out your personalized recommendations, which only need 20 rated books before you can recieve reading suggestions based on your personal taste. Or, browse the winners and nominees of the 2012 Goodreads Choice Awards. And don't forget to peruse the thousands of lists on Listopia and enter giveaways to win brand-new books! We also recommend that you browse for groups reading your to-read books or groups near you to find a great place for discussion.

Now in its third year, our reading challenge is such an inspiring indicator of reading enthusiasm. In 2011, 154,169 participants pledged to read more than 10 million books. In 2012, 303,232 participants pledged to read 17.8 million books. And we expect 2013 to blow past these numbers!

There's something about the sound of "2013" that truly feels like the future. And since the apocalypse didn't come on 12/21/2012, let's embrace the new year and all it has to offer. How many books will you pledge?

Melissa Whoo Hoo I love this challenge

message 153: by Petula (new)

Petula I don't agree with Maria. To me it depends on how much time you have to read. When I was working I would not have been able to read more than 25 books a year. But now I have retired I read everyday for several hours. I read rather than watch t v. The thing I do agree with is the quality of some books but that is what reviews are for.

message 154: by Kartika (new)

Kartika Missed my goal of 30 last year, so will set it the same and read more. :-)

message 155: by Cézanne (new)

Cézanne Hayden-Dilbert I'm going for 60

message 156: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Stie Upping my challenge by 5 this year: 60 books or bust! Thanks, Goodreads, for giving me this platform to log my books and be inspired by the readers and writers who are reading with me!

message 157: by Diana (new)

Diana With e-books and paperbacks I will set my goal at 50. Good luck everyone!!!

message 158: by Cedricsmom (new)

Cedricsmom I'm setting only a 2 book/month goal + a bonus book to make it 25. That's plenty with all the other stuff I do, plus I really hope to return to work this year. I'd like to knock out half a dozen classics, too. I'm going for quality, not quantity. Besides, if I go over 25, I'll feel so virtuous! :-D

Karen’s Library Hit my goal of 100 books in 2012 with 102! Going for 110 this year! ;-)

This. Everyone reads as little or as much as they want to for their own reasons. It doesn't matter whether the reason for reading is for learning or for enjoyment. The site is for everyone, regardless of preference.

We're all here for the love of reading. Let's respect and enjoy our similarities rather than our differences.

QFT.

Nor do many of us feel the need to make ourselves look superior and more intelligent by bashing the reading habits of others.

message 180: by Mavis (new)

Mavis 25 I'am aming for!

message 181: by Michael (new)

Michael I am going for 200!

I read 100 in 2011, 150 last year, now it is starting to increase!

message 182: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Bermann Was first thing i thought of too this morning! Last years target was 200 and i think finished on 227.

So this year ive set it at 250. Yes alot, but Im housebound, sleep very little due to pain, so i get my kindle and read.. best thing I have ever bought, can take my mobile fone away but NEVER my kindle!!

My NYE Resolution is to make sure i review them all!

message 183: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Helena Theodora I love reading, but I sometimes have problems with my concentration, meaning I have difficulties reading then, and sometimes I can't find the time for anything. So I guess 52 books should be enough for me, hope I'll be successful. :)

message 184: by Sharon (new)

Sharon I'm going in ! Thanks for inviting me !

message 185: by Catt (new)

Catt I used to read much more than I do now, since I hit high school. I used to read 10 books, 20 books, or sometimes more. Now, it's hard to find time to read even two or three. My goal's to read 10 this year! (I suppose that includes assigned reading books, since I usually enjoy those.)

message 186: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Maggie -reviewing them or even just documenting them would be a good goal for me too!

message 187: by Elyse (new)

Elyse Schramm My goal was 50 last year and I surpassed it by 4. So my goal will be 55 this year. :)

message 188: by Joanna (new)

Joanna I'm in for 52!

message 189: by Shantel (new)

Shantel Henry I'm going for 50 this year.

message 190: by Cade (new)

Cade I went over my goal by 22 in 2012...so I upped it to 200 this year!

message 191: by Ruby (new)

Ruby I love the reading challenge. This will be my third year participating. Happy Reading in the New Year! Good reading to you all!

message 192: by HJ (new)

HJ Gosh, I guess that I'm reading a lot of toilet paper trash since I hit 585 books for 2012. I really didn't think any of my 400-500+ page tomes were considered TP, but at least I enjoyed them. I've already read most of the classics, so I'm guessing that's all that's left?

I'm psyched about the new year, but think I'll be busier with a household move this year, so I'll lower my goal to 400 and see how that goes.

Good luck to everyone on their new goals. :)

message 193: by Mette (new)

Mette Love this Challenge :)

message 194: by Robbin Melton (new)

Robbin Melton I read 102 instead of 100 books last year. Upping it to 120 this year!

Lol, as my coworker calls it, cotton candy for the brain. Some people will balk about it being unhealthy but it is damn delicious!

message 197: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 01, 2013 03:42PM) (new)

I'm gonna do this I read a lot anyways. In fact I just finished a book today :) I'm gonna try for 120.

message 198: by Helena (new)

Helena Last year my goal was 30, but I only started in March/April. In the end I got 24 books. This year my goal will be 40. Hope to actually beat it!

message 199: by Sharon (new)

Sharon 13 in 2013!

message 200: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer I love reading and easily read a book at least every couple of days depending on the books. So my goal will be rather high - 400. It would be awesome if I could import my booklist from my kindle into my booklist here and it would be more accurate. Since I bought my Kindle 3 years ago I have downloaded over 6,000 books and have probably read close to half of them. Some just got deleted since they couldn't hold my attention.
