Join the 2013 Reading Challenge

Ring in the new year: The century is officially a teenager! What will you do with your 2013? January is that magical time of goal-making. Will you learn a new language or commit to the gym twice a week? More importantly, how many books will you read? Make a reading resolution with the 2013 Reading Challenge, and Goodreads will help you hit your target.
Simply set a goal, any goal—it can be as low or high as you want—and Goodreads will track your progress. We'll let you know when you're falling behind and when you're out ahead! Be as aggressive or conservative as you like. The average goal set in 2012 was 58 books for the year (approximately a book per week), but we see a wide range of targets.
And if you need to pad your to-read list, there are a plethora of ways to find books on Goodreads! You can try out your personalized recommendations, which only need 20 rated books before you can recieve reading suggestions based on your personal taste. Or, browse the winners and nominees of the 2012 Goodreads Choice Awards. And don't forget to peruse the thousands of lists on Listopia and enter giveaways to win brand-new books! We also recommend that you browse for groups reading your to-read books or groups near you to find a great place for discussion.

Now in its third year, our reading challenge is such an inspiring indicator of reading enthusiasm. In 2011, 154,169 participants pledged to read more than 10 million books. In 2012, 303,232 participants pledged to read 17.8 million books. And we expect 2013 to blow past these numbers!
There's something about the sound of "2013" that truly feels like the future. And since the apocalypse didn't come on 12/21/2012, let's embrace the new year and all it has to offer. How many books will you pledge?

Congrats and good luck!! :D

Joining GR on Jan. 1, 2012, was the best decision I made in 2012! I read 716/goal of 715, going for 800 in 2013!

I've already added all of them to my Goodreads page for her. =)
I love the introduction. Very encouraging indeed. This is my first year taking part in the challenge. I set my goal to 30, simply because my choices are usually long, classics, difficult and include many foreign languages. Ex: The Faerie Queene, The Odyssey, Ulysses, Le Comte de Monte-Cristo.Happy New Year!!
Wouldn't it be great if this was tied to a charity in some way? There could be a sponsor or private donors who donate books to libraries or school libraries affected by Hurricane Sandy, or just libraries who are really in need of some more literature. My goal is a modest 24. I don't know how some of the previous commenters are averaging 2.5 - 3 books per week to meet their goal! Wow!
I did 100 in 2012 and I really enjoyed it! I may go for a little less this year as I also have a resolution of re-learning the fiddle. I'm going to do the reading challenge every year though, I think it's a great idea!
And so we start again. ^_^ I'm going to make this year even awesomer than last year and last year was pretty awesome.
My target in 2012 was 90 (eventually - I upped it from 70 sometime in the Autumn). I ended with 92 and halfway through several more. But I feel that wasn't too bad since I only started in March. Therefore I am going to try for 150 this year, since I will be finishing at least one today!I hope everyone meets (or exceeds) their targets for 2013!

I set a goal of 50 books last year and surpassed that number by a few books. However, I am more determined this year and am going to shoot for 100. I take this very seriously and it's a fabulous goal and a great feeling to know I made it. Thanks for letting your followers post their goals.
Okay, 2 amonth for the school year = 18,and then one a week for summer vacation = 10 adds up to 28 books. Yeah, I can do that! Happy New Year all!!!
75 this year. I started in March or so last year and made it to 50 just barely. I think 75 is a good goal for me. :D
query: does re-reading count? or does it have to be new reads? (if re-reading counts, my goal is 150, otherwise it's 100)...
I've been looking forward to setting a new goal today. I became aware of goodreads sometime in the summer and set a goal of 50 books for the year; I finished 49! I am going to break my goal down into different genre this year also. Happy New Year and happy reading to all!

Theresa wrote: "I would think as long as you do reread it it should count. Do you really reread 50 books a year?"sometimes even more than that --- I'm an avid (and a fast) reader... and I love revisiting old friends by rereading...
The average last year was 58? Yikes! That's intimidating. I wish I had the time to do nothing but read, but since I don't I'll have to set a more modest goal.
Hi everyone. I'm glad to be here, It's my first challenge and i'll do my best. I hope success my goal of 10 books. it could seem a low goal but it's a high and a real one for me. I'll try to improve it the next time.
In 2012, I reached my goal of 20 books. This year, I am shooting for 30. Happy New Year everyone and good luck with your personal challenges!
People just aren't serious nowadays. Some people go through books as if they were toilet paper.* Reading hundreds of books a year, if they actually do read them, doesn't mean they're smarter, and it certainly isn't going to make them so.
I find the whole 200-500-1000 books thing ridiculous.
I prefer to just make sure I'm actually enjoying it, learning something, nurturing my spirit, no matter whether I manage 5 or 30 books.
Having said that, my goal this year is 30. Last year I finished 23, having started the challenge in May. I'm not going to rush it either, anyway.
Enjoy your books...
* Well, now that I think about it, that's what I think most books read by people here are: toilet paper. You know, the 150-page romantic, sexy thriller, teenage fiction kind of crap. Those books should be counted by the tenfold, which would make all those inflated lists seem more reasonable.
Last year's reading challenge was the only resolution I managed to keep. I read 78 books last year, but I have some other projects I want to get done this year so I am going to set my goal at a far more manageable 50.

Although it is encouraging. It's only a competition if you view it as a competition :) Enjoy !
