Join the 2013 Reading Challenge

Ring in the new year: The century is officially a teenager! What will you do with your 2013? January is that magical time of goal-making. Will you learn a new language or commit to the gym twice a week? More importantly, how many books will you read? Make a reading resolution with the 2013 Reading Challenge, and Goodreads will help you hit your target.
Simply set a goal, any goal—it can be as low or high as you want—and Goodreads will track your progress. We'll let you know when you're falling behind and when you're out ahead! Be as aggressive or conservative as you like. The average goal set in 2012 was 58 books for the year (approximately a book per week), but we see a wide range of targets.
And if you need to pad your to-read list, there are a plethora of ways to find books on Goodreads! You can try out your personalized recommendations, which only need 20 rated books before you can recieve reading suggestions based on your personal taste. Or, browse the winners and nominees of the 2012 Goodreads Choice Awards. And don't forget to peruse the thousands of lists on Listopia and enter giveaways to win brand-new books! We also recommend that you browse for groups reading your to-read books or groups near you to find a great place for discussion.

Now in its third year, our reading challenge is such an inspiring indicator of reading enthusiasm. In 2011, 154,169 participants pledged to read more than 10 million books. In 2012, 303,232 participants pledged to read 17.8 million books. And we expect 2013 to blow past these numbers!
There's something about the sound of "2013" that truly feels like the future. And since the apocalypse didn't come on 12/21/2012, let's embrace the new year and all it has to offer. How many books will you pledge?

I am ready for 2013, bring it on baby. Last year I only started in May so I only got 25 books. I don't know how many I will read this year. I will add as I go. Let's save this generation with reading.

Enjoy reading anyway :)

I have completed 4 books in my challenge of 40 books, among which 10 are classics. I think I'll finish the 5th one this Sunday. Sometimes it really feels like stop sleeping, eating and everything else, especially when you have the right book in your hand.
Caroline wrote: "If you re-read books from 2012 do they add themselves into this year or do re-reads not count?"I think they should be counted. I am re-reading 2 books from the last year and at least 3 from my school days.
Anne-marie wrote: "400? wow... and I thought I read a lot... that is more than 1 book a day.. no, I can't do that, have to work bit too, to be able to buy all these lovely books. Happy reading!"I work full time, and go to school. I just read really really fast so good luck to the person who has 400 because I thought my 200 was high!
ok, I know someone suggested marking another edition if you are re-reading a book. Has anyone thought of what to do if you are re-reading a book with only one edition? I want to re-read a KA series but she doesn't have any other editions I can make as reading for my challenge. Thanks
The reading challenge widget doesn't update automatically, making it not really useful for display on blogs and stuff. Is there any plan to fix that?
hannah wrote: "The reading challenge widget doesn't update automatically, making it not really useful for display on blogs and stuff. Is there any plan to fix that?"But it updated on my blog. Try to reset the widget, maybe that could help?

Even when I prepare to copy and paste, though, it has the number of books read in the code. Shouldn't that instead be some sort of variable so that it will automatically change whenever necessary?
Reposting again, but I actually had the problem in 2011 too, so I don't know that that's going to fix it.

You are right but I am currently using only one widget, the one for reading challenge. I have added another one today but since I am active here for a very small time I don't know how it will appear on my blog. By the way you ahve a great shelf. All the best for this year.

I'm using that widget too, so maybe a mod can help. And thanks for the compliment! Good luck on your challenge.
Actually, mods, if you follow this, the widget also doesn't update on your site. Unless I click on "view books," the number stays the way it was since the last time I clicked on that.

At least 2 books per month. Books that are new or at least new to me. I tend to reach for old friends and so have quite a few new ones piled up!
Just finished #5 of 501. The Lost Years - mary Higgins Clarks
2. The Bone Bed - Patricia Cornwell
3. Zoo - James Patterson
4. Sweet Revenge - Fern Michaels
5. Private: London - James Ppatterson
I'm trying for 25 books this year. I had it set for 25 last year but I didn't think I would make it so I knocked it down to 20 but I'm going to try for 25.

Oh, no, I just had a few free weekends (VERY RARE), so I guess that January was an intense month when it comes to books, but I don't have many expectations about the rest of the year... So lower the expectations :)

I think one gets more done when there are less expectations..what is your target btw? I am considering being more ambitious and making it 100!
Linda wrote: "NOT SURE WHAT'S WRONG BUT COUNT NOT MOVING UP!"Enter your new book on the "home" page, click "view books" and then "save". Works every time. (I don't have to do this on the laptop, just my tablet.)
And also, make sure the two dates are filled in... The read began and finished dates.
Hope this helps.
I find this site hard to navigate and can only easily get back here by clicking on the notifications, so someone please keep notifying me. I have read 12 books so far this month, the latest being The Sisters Brothers, a very fast read. Recommended by Anson Mount(Hell on Wheels)as I follow him on Facebook and Goodreads. My goal is 150 books for this year.
