63 Reading Recommendations for Every Fall Reading Vibe

For reasons that are hard to rationally explain, autumn remains the best season for serious book reading. It’s a vibe thing. There’s just something about the fall season that makes you want to curl up with a big book.
In honor of this annual phenomenon, we’ve scoured the stacks to compile this list of 63 book recommendations for autumn reading vibes. It’s largely an intuitive process. Some books just feel autumnal—spooky classics like Practical Magic or The Haunting of Hill House. Some pivot off the back-to-the-school setting, like Donna Tartt’s The Secret History. And some just possess a kind of ambient October Gothic energy—think Daphne du Maurier’s immortal classic, Rebecca.
To further facilitate the vibe sorting, we’ve divided this collection into different reading moods: Witchy & Magic, Cozy Fantasies, Dark & Moody, Autumnal Academia, Uncanny & Strange, and Ghosts Galore. The books selected are a mix of older and newer titles, and feel free to make any additional recommendations in the comments section.
You can also use the Want to Read button beneath each cover image to save space on your own digital shelf. Have at it, Goodreaders.

I love that this list is not only based on amazon bestsellers but an actual very good bunch of books find their place here!

I read Weyward, the invisible life of Laddie Larue and Legends & lattes. Apart from the last, I don't consider the two others as cosy reads, but I enjoyed them nonetheless. Legends and lattes was a winter read I enjoyed under a blanket with a nice cup of Chai tea while wishing they had cinnamon buns at my local bakery 😋
Highly recommend “Salt and Broom” by Sharon Lynn Fisher. It’s a witchy Jane Eyre retelling and is so good!
Chase wrote: "Rebecca seems more spring to me (Rhododendrons) iykyk"its a gothic thriller so I suppose that's why it made the list
How come cinnamon bun is on the list but pumpkin spice isn't? Cinnamon bun is the second in the series.
Under Ghosts Galore I'd add How to sell a Haunted House by Grady HendrixAnd to Cozy Reads I'd definitely add The House with Chicken Legs by Sophie Anderson 📚😉
some mild spoilers in this comment, read with caution...i loved the once and future witches so much... such brilliant, powerful writing by alix e harrow.
rebecca was absolute madness in a great way but honestly not buying some of the interpretations...! or at the very least think du maurier was complicating things & def. don't want to be pedestalling rebecca and mrs danvers :-/
wuthering heights is such a gorgeous novel - one that people rarely talk about from the context of healing intergenerational traumas !!!
abandoned practical magic - the sex was incessant and pathologised to the point i couldn't keep reading. which was really sad because i was otherwise loving it.
dracula would be a great one for the list... it was genuinely so chilling i couldn't keep reading!!!
So many of these books I've seen and want to read! I've picked up The Night Circus because some love it, and some hate it. Time to make up my own mind!
Before the Coffee get Cold Isn't a comforting book( don't let the cover and title fool you) It's all so sexist. The author created female characters just to objecty them.
Im doing the beta challenge for the Fall Vibes and I finished Psalm of the Wild-Built a few days ago. Havent gotten the achievement for it yet though. Anyone else have this problem?
The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas is a fantastic haunted house/ghost story with some romance thrown in that comfortably coincides with the plot (I can't recommend her second book about vampires, unfortunately).Sunshine by Robin McKinley is my favorite modern vampire horror/romance, and definitely has great Halloween/witchy/fall vibes. MC is kidnapped by vampires and brough to this gothic mansion to be someone's meal, but she ends up becoming uneasy allies with a vampire instead. This is not your typical vampire romance, and it's a very cool world to get lost in.
I really liked Haloween Party by Agatha Christie, it was really short and entertaining. A mystery in a small town where everyone knows everyone. Another could be What The River Knows by Isabel Ibanez, not necessaryly an autumn book, but I enjoyed it a lot. One of my favorite book of the year!
So mad I read the ex hex and it counted as my 3rd book read and not my fall vibes.. I have no interest in reading any other books from this list 😡

Can you recommend me a book ..."I loved Legends & Lattes, A Psalm for the Wild-Built and The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches. And I didn't read any of them in the fall.
Altought it can be misleading by the title AND the cover... The Cinnamon Bun Bookstore DOES NOT take place in autumn, but in summer. The Pumpkin Spice Café, the 1st book of the series, has more cozy autumn vibes.

Just as a heads up for other readers, Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires contains SA and body horror. Personally, that doesn't fit my definition of "cozy".
I like horror and I thought this book was kinda gross.
I thought I'd let others know given the ongoing debate about other "cozy" books on this list in the comments.
For autumn, I would suggest 'Bag of Bones' by Stephen King rather than 'The Shining'. 'The Shining' is best read in the dead of winter.

Not technically in this genre, but a lot of fun.
Bookshops & Bonedust should be on here as well as Legends & Lattes. Same for The Pumpkin Spice Café if the Cinnamon Bun Bookstore is on here. This Spells Love by Kate Robb would be a good one to add too
Lincoln In the Bardo is one of the quirkiest, loveliest, most unique books I've ever read. Funny and heart-wrenching simultaneously with a triumphant ending. Beautiful.
I just read A House With Good Bones by T. Kingfisher. It would fit well into Dark and moody (similar to Mexican Gothic) and also Witchy and Magic.
