I plan to go well over my goal
flag
Hi Folks - A couple of quick tips for meeting book reading goals:1) I try to read (at least a little bit) every day.
2) All of the books I read are 300-900+ pages. I find if I'm falling
behind, that sneaking in a few shorter books can get you caught
up pretty quickly. Last year I read Kafka's "The Metamorphosis"
(98 pages) and Orwell's "Animal Farm" (118 pages) to get myself
back on track.
I’m aiming for 60, (6 non fiction ; 18 fiction; 36 manga and graphic novels) but I’m also counting Manga Volumes and graphic novels as individual books.
I didn’t meet my reading goal last year so I used the same number, 36, as last year. I’m getting off to a good start.
52. One a week is a reasonable target seeing as I managed 56 last year. I worry that if I set the target too high it could diminish the enjoyment I get from reading if I have to get through books quickly if I'm struggling to reach my target late in the year.
Joining a book club is a guarantee to read more books and more diverse literature than I normally would. Find one in your area, or better yet, start a new one!
Why read more for the sake of reading more? Why not “how to read better? How to learn from books you read? How to reflect on what you have read?”. It’s like running through museum to claim that you have seen all the paintings - a little bit pathetic.
I love how good reads keeps track of my progress and even tells me when I am ahead of schedule. This allows me to enjoy reading and not stress about the challenge. Now I routinely am ahead of schedule!
My goal was 50, so about one a week with some wiggle room, but Month 1 isn't even over and I'm on my 9th book! I may need to up the goal, which makes me super happy!
I knit and listen to auto books-great way to finish knitting projects and enjoy a good book. I read at night before going to sleep, so I double my chances of reaching my goals.
I retired last year and read more than I anticipated. I’m loving getting back into old reading habits! I have a list of favorite authors and a list of want to reads outside of my usual. Ivan jump back to a friendly author if I get a bad one
I’m going for 1 book. If I finish it, then I can up the goal. I have about 20 book WIPS, so finishing one is a good start.

Pat M I picked 55 this year as I know I have one very long book I started on New Year's Day (so I can remember when I started). Can't read as long as I used to as the eyes are getting old. I'd love to spend a whole day just reading like when I was younger with no children. I should finish 55, I'm reading 4 different books right now . One has two chapters to go. Audio books put me to sleep. Never liked being read to. My husband used to put them on in the car if we were going on a trip and I would go to sleep LOL. I think they are a great way to read for many people.
I'm trying for 55 this year. I read 79 last, but who knows if I'll have as much time this year. I've got a couple of 700 page books to read!
I read 130 books last year, but that was mainly because of distance learning, so I'm aiming for 100 this year.
John wrote: "I read 122 books, averaging 300 pages per book last year. Keep at least 2 books or an eBook reader in the bathroom. Keep a book with short chapters/articles in the kitchen. Count audiobooks. Audiob..."Ashton wrote: "I met my goal last year and my biggest tip goes hand-in-hand with reading what you like… if you’re reading a book and you struggle toI'm pick it up and just aren’t interested anymore, ABANDON IT! I'm the opposite. When I begin a book I like to end it even if that's a struggle.
Bob wrote: "I’m going for quality over quantity. So set goal at 24. It’s not a race. Books should be savored, not gulped. Also, since these 73-year old eyes aren’t what they used to be, eye strain is less like..."I completely agree that you should take your time and enjoy what you're reading. More isn't always better.
Nicole wrote: "I always start my challenge at 150, then once I read over that and we're still much around mid-year, I'll up it up again. I'll do that a few times, especially like in 2021 I ended-up at 239 or 2016..."I do that too, except I do it with only 25 books. 150 -- wow!
Barbara wrote: "Whenever I go to any appointment or have to sit in the car for any reason, I bring a book with me and read there. Otherwise, I usually just read at bedtime or when I'm on a plane. Reading is my hap..."Same. I always have to have a book on me. Having five minutes of waiting without a book drives me crazy!
Phillip wrote: "Excellent suggestions. I treasure Goodreads, but I have one significant disagreement with its “official” policy regarding reading books: audiobooks should not count as “reading.” Reading is a skill..."I am not going to judge people who listen to audio books or say it's not "reading". Not something I care to argue about. But, reading text and listening to something are very different skills for me, and if I were to listen to an audio book (which I have not done yet for a variety of reasons, including my mind wandering and tuning out), I personally would not want to include them as "read". I guess a solution could be to create a "listened" shelf for those who care to distinguish?
Andreas Marteng wrote: "I usually try to read 10% of a book pr. day which makes it 10 days pr. book, but I have a goal of two books pr. month. This gives me some wiggle-room if there are days I don't make the 10%."Great idea!
My aim this year is 15. Sometimes I will start reading a book and really not like it but I push myself to finish it with the hopes it will get better. I am going to try to not do that this year and just let it go. I have tried audiobooks but I find they put me to sleep...doesn't matter who it is. I also stare at a screen all day for work so an Ebook is not appealing. Luckily I have no shortage of books to read.
Ann Marie wrote: "Sometimes I will start reading a book and really not like it but I push myself to finish it with the hopes it will get better. I am going to try to not do that this year and just let it go. ..."There are too many books to read to waste time on a bad book! I still have difficulty dumping a book, but I have gotten better. It allows me to devote previous reading time to books I enjoy!
I read before turning out lights at bedtime. Also a of reading on vacation. I’m lucky toReach my goal of 30 a year.
Great advice for keeping motivated and focused on your reading goals. I am reading 100 books this year.
I am reading 1K books this year and reviewing more than that. 1. I read a lot of picture-books.
2. I DNF readily and don't waste much time on books that don't engage me But I do review those, too.
Being ready to DNF, and reviewing everything, help me to enjoy my reading more.
