Pay It Forward by Catherine Ryan Hyde
"Save for the "hit you below the belt" ending, I would have giving this book a full five out of five. The ending was cheaply melodramatic and just there for shock value. I haven't seen the film though I know enough about it to say that the actors c..." Read more of this review »
Pay It Forward by Catherine Ryan Hyde
"I can't think of anything to say about this book that won't be a *spoiler* so I'll just say this ...
If you've seen the movie but not read the book then you need to remedy that.
Just about the only thing that the two have in common is the title.

Florence by Andrea Ponsi
"This is a book about seeing light and line, but also about tactile sensations - of what it feels to touch a wall, inhabit a view. It is a most unusual memoir of moments really."
Cheryl and 1 other person liked Sandra's review of Nothing Rhymes with Orange:
Nothing Rhymes with Orange by Adam Rex
"Not sure who the intended audience is. Too wordy for young kids and not particularly engaging, too young for kids who might enjoy the orange's commentary, then off the rails into not funny adultland?"
The Hidden Life of Dogs by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas
" Wonderful! "
" Most of the notes that accompany the text directly are, imo, worthless. Unlike those of the annotated Charlotte's Web (read last month in the Newbery ...more "

Short, but somewhat dated, and controversial. Recommended only if you've already loved The Genius of Dogs: How Dogs Are Smarter than You Think and want more.

The 'free-range' issue is interesting. I'm not comfortable with it, but I won't condemn Thoma

Why isn't this gem more widely known? Sure it's old, but surely somebody loved it when they were a child. It's a classic. Different winds through the seasons each get their own unique verse, most of which look like Haiku. Simple but evocative & g ...more

Walt Whitman
“This is what you shall do; Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body.”
Walt Whitman

Elie Wiesel
“The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference.”
Elie Wiesel

Neil Gaiman
“Sometimes you wake up. Sometimes the fall kills you. And sometimes, when you fall, you fly.”
Neil Gaiman, Fables & Reflections

Henry David Thoreau
“Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth.”
Henry David Thoreau, Walden

Katharine Hepburn
“If you obey all of the rules, you miss all of the fun.”
Katharine Hepburn
