48 Rollicking Romance Recommendations by Trope

Posted by Sharon on February 8, 2021

Mistaken identities, one-night stands, forbidden love, fake engagements—oh my! There's no denying it: The romance genre has got some of the best tropes in the entire book biz.

To celebrate the myriad paths to love and to match you with your next hot read, we've made a list of recent highly rated romances organized around popular tropes.

Don't forget to add any titles that catch your eye to your Want to Read shelf, and be sure to share your favorite example of these tropes in the comments below!

Forced Proximity

The trope: Oh no, they've been fighting their feelings for each other! Oh no, now they have to share this apartment/office/tiny cabin! Oh no, it's time to go to sleep and THERE'S ONLY ONE BED! Oh nooo...or ooooh yes?

Fake Relationship

The trope: Two people pretend they are in love because of: 1) Work Reasons; 2) Family Reasons; 3) Societal Reasons; 4) Their Pasts; 6) Their Futures; 7) Um...Plot? Inevitably, our fakers catch real feelings.

Enemies to Lovers

The trope: Opposites attract, even when they think they're repulsed by each other. They're always trading barbs and insisting to friends that they can't stand each other! Really! Fighting? Nah, it's actually all foreplay...

Second-Chance Romance

The trope: They're on again, off again...on again (again). They've lost that lovin' feeling. They broke up over a misunderstanding years ago, but fate has a funny way of intervening...

Secret Identities

The trope: One of them pretended to be someone they're not, Because of Reasons, and now they're both trapped in a web of lies! "Will they still love me when they find out I'm a prince/spy/millionaire heiress?" (Spoiler alert: They will.)

Steam Up the Kitchen

The trope: At least one character works in the food industry in some way. Super-cute bakery? Reality food competition? Food trucks? Yes to all. Mr. Shakespeare might have said music is the food of love, but we're pretty sure he really meant cupcakes.

What are your favorite romance tropes, and which books best use them? Let’s talk books in the comments below!

Vero Carriso OF COURSE the best trope ever comes first! Forced proximity books are ELITE!!! Recently I´ve read The Ex Talk and The Hating Game and are great examples, forced proximity at its finest!!! (I cant seem to stop using exclamation pointss, sorryy!!!!!!)

kittykat AKA Ms. Tortitude For a change, I'm really impressed with the number of indies on this list. Thank you! It would be great to see even more next time.

But where is Friends to Lovers??? The best romance trope!

hell yeah!!

message 8: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Haha love the descriptions!

That said, Opposites Attract and Enemies to Lovers are not exactly the same trope. (I love both!!)

message 9: by Ashley (new)

Ashley I would like to suggest Candy Hearts by Erin McLellan for the forced proximity trope. It's a steamy m/m romance with a slightly older guy who is friends with the other guy's sister. They are at a cabin/weekend house for Valentine's Day and since the weather is so bad/electricity is out it's just the two guys for a while. The guys are really sweet together. I really enjoyed the book.

message 10: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Fake Dating rules!! I also LOVE slowburn.

message 11: by Lynn (new)

Lynn One of my favorite tropes. One night stand ...oops, pregnancy.

message 12: by Lynn (new)

Lynn Is fake marriage/relationship or forced marriage the same as forced proximity or does it qualify as a separate trope?

Everyone needs to read Talia Hibbert`s Chloe Brown.

Mia Romance Dispatch Ah, Enemies to lovers for the win! You should add “Well met” by Jen De Luca to this trope! And also “friends to lovers” and “best friend’s sister”...

message 16: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Obsessed 😄😄

message 17: by Charity (new)

Charity Yoder Enemies to lovers meets forced proximity... Yesss.

Yes! This! We need a good Friends to Lovers list. I agree, my fave trope.

message 19: by Jo (new)

Jo Haff Fake relationships.
Forced marriages.
Insta-family.
Those are my favourite. ♥

message 20: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas (a great book) doesn't fit its category - they are thrown together because she is "compromised" by being in his unchaperoned presence and there's societal but not family pressure to marry, and they end up falling for each other as they spend time together to see if it will work. I don't think it's fair to say they are ever in a fake relationship since there's no engagement and everyone knows the score in their families.

message 21: by Serewyn (new)

Serewyn Nice list! I love the whole thrope thing, so helpful (and funny :) ♥
